The best spot to set up a trail cam is actually a very easy location to change SD cards and access during the hunt. Why? Because the best trail cam location strategy should directly revolve around your treestand locations. How you access your land to maintain and check out your trail cam setups, can match the hunting season access pressure you already place on your land, when you place a trail cam at a stand location. Placing a trail cam at your stand location is a great way to not only access your cameras, but to capture an incredible level of trail cam Intel. Here is how to get the most out of your trail cam setup locations...

They are extremely advantageous! I have used Exodus Trail cams... the Lift II model. Here is a link to check them out... bit.ly/JSturgis 5 year warranty and I have had zero hunting season failures. 2" viewing screen, true HD video and extremely high quality. I am running up to 20 trail cams at one time and regardless of the B roll I need for videos...I rely on the trail cams heavily for learning buck behavior, in season census, buck home range and for making informed hunting decisions. OUTSTANDING trail cameras, after hundreds of thousands of pics and videos over 3 seasons I can highly recommend.

I have had multiple deer come over and sniff my camera on the lens. I had a bear actually push my camera around the tree. I find that placing a camera over a bait pile can be a problem because you get a million pictures of squirrels - better to set up over a scrape

Great video Jeff! Do you always use the video mode? I've found that when I use the still shot mode the deer can hear the "click" of the shutter. When hunting pressured deer or leary deer ( because of bait) that's enough to spook them. Maybe they think that the "click" is my safety going off lol .
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, thank you very much! Actually mine are on 1 pic/1 vid Hybrid mode. We had 13/16 trail cam locations where deer didn't look at the trail cam one time, all year. They can not hear the click on most quality trail cams...certainly not on my Exodus cams or even my Moultrie cams I used to use. However...they can't stand IR red bulbs and unhidden trail cams. Maybe that is what they are looking at? Again though, 100% positive they can't hear any of the trail cams I have used for about 15 years now...all my cams take pics, and deer don't look at them. If the deer can hear the click I definitely wouldn't want to use them...
@chadsyl23
@chadsyl23 5 жыл бұрын
@Gary - Assuming you're using sometype of red or black flash camera, the audible click most people refer to is actually not created by the camera's shutter but the IR filter. The camera's IR filter is the mechanical device that moves over top of the lens assembly allowing the camera to pick different wavelengths of light. The IR filter is controlled by the camera's light metering system which tells the camera's processor how much light is available or needed to take the photo. Typically, when working correctly, the IR filter should only move twice in a 24 hour period. Once just before dark at sunset and then just before sunrise. If the filter is consistently moving back and forth the device is malfunctioning or as Jeff noted it's likely a lower end camera, OR possibly a pretty old camera. Also, when the IR filter is stuck the camera will have pink tinted photos during the day OR back night time photos. Hope that helps you better understand the situation

Jeff, I have an off subject question for you. Considering all the preparation you put into your hunting properties I'm curious where you gut the deer in relation to the water hole , mock scrape, food plots?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

Daniel...great question! At times right in the middle of it...at other times I can drag the deer to the side. I always try to gut under the open sky...the pile gets cleaned up quickly and I do not find it bothers the deer much at all.

I’ve heard you speak about blacking out the flash on the infrared cams before. How did you do this? And how much did it reduce the flash range. Thank you.

Where I hunt in Maine, deer migrate out of the mountains in the winter and head back in the spring. Do you think it is worth it to put trail cameras up in the spring? A lot of times they just are not in the same place come fall hunting season. Thanks

Great question ..I like putting them back out roughly mid to late June when I can identify specific bucks. O had the same thing in the UP of MI for 10 years...the deer were completely gone to the deer yards around 10 miles away, for between 3 and 4 months. One winter the very last deer track was on 12/12 and they were gone until late April. O pulled my cams then, but I did place them out on mineral when they came back just because I liked watching the deer. Now in SW WI ag land I take them out sometime in April...except for a few turkey locations...

Quick question from a fellow michagander, my cameras have the opposite effect on deer. I constantly get deer even nice young bucks, they smell and even lick my cameras. Any idea what would cause this? Lol thank you in advance for any help you can give! God bless, and thanks for all the great help!!
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 5 жыл бұрын
Good question...that'd s bad thing and I do see that. It is simply telling you that the deer see your cameras. For starters I would place them at least 6' high, on a tree wider than the trail cam, with the side or profile of the cam hidden in some way. Also...only black out and low glow trail cams. When deer see your trail cam more than a couple of times out of 100 pics, those mature bucks will begin to take a wide berth around your cams. I even have experienced that too many invasive cam setups on a small parcel will keep mature bucks away all together. Those young deer are curious...even adult does, butt he older a buck becomes, he can turn into a ghost pretty quick if he notices the trail cams. I hope that helps...man I do love MI! Sitting eating at the bridge right now 🙂 on the way home from a long MI client trip...
