the Vande Bharat Express train project is an ambitious task undertaken by the Central government since 2019. These semi-high-speed trains aim to reduce travel time and provide airplane-like amenities at an economical rate. PM Modi inaugurates two new Vande Bharat Express trains on July 7, 2023, taking the total count to 25. With a tight deadline to achieve 75 Vande Bharat Express trains by Independence Day this year, here’s a look at the project.
The first Vande Bharat Express train in the country ran on the New Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat Express route on February 18, 2019. According to reports, until January, the occupancy rate of Vande Bharat Express running between New Delhi and Varanasi is 125.76 percent. This train covers the New Delhi-Varanasi distance 3 hours earlier than other trains on the same route.
While the Vande Bharat Express takes 8 hours to cover the distance between New Delhi and Varanasi, the Poorva Express takes 11 hours and 30 minutes. If you take the Sivaganga Express, it will take you 11 hours and 55 minutes to get from New Delhi to Varanasi. Similarly, Nilanchal Express train takes 13 hours 30 minutes to cover this distance.
New Delhi-Varanasi Vande Bharat Express runs five days a week except Monday and Thursday. 22436 New Delhi - Varanasi Vande Bharat Express leaves Delhi for Varanasi at 6 am and reaches Varanasi at 2 pm. On the other hand, 22435 Varanasi-New Delhi Vande Bharat train leaves Varanasi at 3:00 PM and reaches Delhi at 11:00 PM. Between Delhi and Varanasil, the train halts only at Prayagraj and Kanpur.
Launched for the first time in 2019 on the New Delhi-Varanasi route, the Vande Bharat Express is a semi-high-speed railway project. Also known as Train 18, these trains are managed and maintained by the Indian Railways. The Vande Bharat Express trains comprise superior home-grown ‘Kavach’ Technology, which is a Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS).
In terms of amenities, these trains are equipped with reclining seats like airplanes, infotainment system, and automated doors, to name a few. They can travel at a maximum speed of up to 180 km per hour; however, they are presently running at a speed of 160 km per hour. Also, each coach on the train is equipped with fire detection and communication systems.
The Central government has set a target of making 75 Vande Bharat Express trains operational by India’s 75th Independence Day in August 2023. With the Government rolling out these trains frequently, it is hoped that the target can be achieved.
