Clearly the teacher doesn't believe that the student is referring to guns if the question is asking about something else, but they use this hyperbolic example to emphasize the necessity for units, or in the case of Carter, he is using exaggerative rhetoric to emphasize the depth of his curiosity to Travis's craving, as well as to keep a tone of comedy. This also serves as a shield for Carter against those who may poke fun at his curiosity. The element of comedy also acts in a similar way as how many authors and writers use bathos in their work.
