I think one of the most important differences here is the Podcaster is a dynamic microphone that will do a better job of blocking out background noises. The NT is a condenser that sounds well but will pick up more background noise. The difference between those two probably matter more how much background noise you have and if you have a sound treated room or not. The podcaster is going to do a better job in an untreated room with more background noise than the NT will. The podcaster is actually a pretty special microphone for USB. The vast majority of USB microphones are condenser like the NT where as the podcaster is dynamic. If you are leaning NT you might consider finding a Blue Yeti new or used for cheap as well.
@DanShepperd

Agree 100%. I use Rode dynamics and condensers. At home, in an untreated room, I find dynamic mics are way easier because they cut the background noise. I get closer to the Procaster for a richer sound (plus hotter signal, so less gain needed). The Procaster gives a pleasing proximity effect (more bass), but you need to be within a couple of inches for the full benefit. If that picks up too much breath then go off axis - I have mine at a 45 degree angle. BTW: Cheaper foam pop filters for the Procaster are available. Ebay is good.

The NT USB condenser sounds like it has a little dynamic processing built in with a boost in the high and mid lows and sounds great. The Podcaster on the other hand sounds like a EV RE-20 great solid quality. I do a prerecorded radio program and have both also have used the Blue Yeti since it came out and use a EV wind screen. All 3 USB's works great with Sony Sound Forge and I use very little or no processing ..Thanks for the video...keep up the good work..

I'm a media composer, and teach music online. I've worked with pro audio gear for decades, including mics by Neumann, Sennheiser, AKG ... Compared to the Podcaster, I honestly think the NT-USB has a more character, including better bass response ... like your videos, btw

Strangely enough, I thought the podcaster sounded more "narrow", like it was clipping the low end. I was looking into getting a podcaster as my NT-USB just died after 4 years, but I think i'll probably look at an XLR instead, after hearing this comparison. Great video!

I've been using the Rode Podcaster since 2010 to do training videos for Pluralsight. It has been rock solid, great sound, and still works great today. I use it with the boom arm and shock mount, very good investments. Only problem I have is that it is TOO good, in that it picks up my breath inhaling. I'm going to order the two pop filters you showed and see if either one solves the issue, or at least tones it down some. I seem to spend all my time editing out my breathing on my videos. :-/

The NT-USB sounded better to me. Plus the podcaster is more expensive and sounds like it may be a bit more fussy to work with having to crank up the gain just to capture your voice. I purchased the NT-USB a while ago, don’t know much about how to properly adjust all the settings on the computer but still get decent sound on my voiceovers. Definitely glad I went with the NT-USB.

I have a Blue Snowball and a Rode NT USB...and to be honest I can hardly hear much of a difference between them. Not enough to pay over 3 times the price of the Blue Snowball. The trick in recording with these U.S.B. microphones...is (1) Where you record...do not place it on a desk next to your computer..(2) Record close up to the microphone (no more than six inches from the mic) and (3) post editing in a program like Audacity is probably necessary to get the sound you want...Also as a matter of interest these U.S.B. Microphones can be used as an external microphone with your phone ...(all you need is an O.T.G.Cable)

It wasn't really a choice, I just happened to have a Rode NT USB laying around not being used. I bought it for our son who later opted for a different mic. So I figured I would try it out for this channel. At the time I was using a Rode video mic. Nothing too fancy, just something I could throw on my DSLR's and record him and his group jamming out. Anyhow, I made a few test videos using the NT and really like it a lot. Just listening to your sound test here tells me I didn't do to bad. I'm sure the Podcaster is a fine mic but I like the sound of the NT more.

I personally prefer the NT-USB. I've been using that for a couple tests and it sounds amazing. Sure, the Podcaster sounds nice too, but it sounds a bit more... cheap? I don't really know how to describe it, but it is a nice microphone. I'm sure it'd sound a lot better if it were plugged into an audio interface. The NT-USB sounds better in this video than my tests with it. Maybe I need to start using Audacity to edit the audio lol

Over 5 years ago, I purchased a Podcaster for my Radio Show and made a second Pop filter with an embroidery ring and a pair of Silk Stockings, yes genuine silk after finding out the Nylon actually had what seemed like a resonant frequency, hence the silk because the silk has threads of varying thickness and thus totally dampens any tenancy to produce and resonance. The Pro Caster is IMHO Head and Shoulder's above anything else BUT you require a phantom supply . So for PC user's the Podcaster I believe has a superior fuller sound - not quite as loud as the NT but certainly fuller.

How do you get your headphones to hear what you are recording either on a podcast or asmr video while you are actually talking and recording? I would really like to hear my voice as I am doing a recording of some kind. Do you need a specific kind of software? Oh one more thing I am doing this off of my smartphone so it may be because of that ? I am using a splitter to use both the mic and headphones.

Question for anyone: @Think Media I have both the RODE Podcaster mic as well as the NT-USB. I have the headphones that RODE sent with the NT-USB and am connected to the back of that microphone. However, if I switch to the Podcaster mic, I hear a great deal of feedback and echoing in the headphones which is making recording difficult. Both mics sound fine when I record, but I've noticed that the NT-USB sounds a little more prominent when I record and listen back to it on my computer speakers. Perhaps a bit clearer. Does anyone have a recommendation as to how to get rid of the echoing sound in the headphones and what levels to set both microphones to during broadcasting. P.S. - I get no feedback in the headphones if I use the NT-USB mic, only the Podcaster mic. Thanks!

Dude - your input levels are far to hot - aim for -12db then normalise and edit later.

I think the NTUSB is better. Seems to enhance the bass in your voice
