Used cars for $5,000 can offer safe and reliable transportation. These models did well in our tests when new and earned our Recommended status. Years later, they’ve held up with few reliability issues-even after eclipsing the 100,000-mile mark.

I like this series focused on used vehicles. New cars are extremely overpriced. Just greedy companies making higher profits every year.

GM doesn't even make cars anymore, just light trucks (pickups, SUVs, crossovers). Ford has stopped making cars too except for the Mustang. It's no wonder foreign manufacturers are winning when American car companies stop producing the product they are supposed to sell. They just barely survive between tax-payer bailouts. It's time to let them fail next time.

The blame for more expensive cars, houses, food etc. resides with YOUR GOVERNMENT that caused a huge inflation by printing money like crazy. Thus the good cars are not overpriced, but your money has far less value than you believe. Better learn some economics.

No surprise that the recommendations are all Toyota and Honda! I've got a 17-year-old hybrid Lexus. I've had it such a long time, but it's still a great car: smooth, powerful, comfortable, and great fuel economy. I have no reason to replace it, but eventually I'll be getting another Lexus.

My 04 es330 was bought in 2021 w/ 44k for $7000. It runs great. The maintenance is a bit high, but it is a very high quality car that isn't made the same today. The thick shiny paint, real leather and wood treatment, and ultra smooth 6 cylinder engine make it seem way more expensive than it is.

if you want to avoid toyota taxes and really high mileage one, look for any GM product with a Buick 3800, be more comfier and tend to be lower mileage than your average camry but will be as reliable as those.

In spring of 2021 I bought my one owner 2002 ES300 for $4495, just as the inflated prices started after covid. I did have to replace 20-year-old OEM parts in the first year and a half but at now 180,000 miles I can’t get a better car with this amount of quality and dependability for that price solid like a tank, super quiet. The 4th gen ES 02-06 were the best built ES Lexus’s ever besides the LS 430’s

I'm 77 & when I was young, 20 year old cars sold for a few hundred dollars, if you were lucky, even if they were in good shape! p.s. I drive a 20 year old, 2004 Toyota Camry, bought new, & I wouldn't sell it for $5,000.Why, because I couldn't replace it, unless I spent $30k for a new one!

So 20 year old Japanese cars who would have thought. Its crazy that today these 2004 cars are still good and don’t seem that old, yet in 2004 if you had a 20 year old car, so a 1984, it was a piece of crap and you looked poor.

Car manufacturing made HUGE leaps and bounds in the 90s and 2000s. Before then the materials and manufacturing techniques were simply not there and cars were mostly disposable piles of junk by 100k miles - that's why odometers only had 5 digits in the first place! Now as long as you do your oil changes and change other fluids, you can easily expect most Japanese cars to make it to 200k miles EZ.

not if you treat them right and do your oil changes every 5k or so. the "10k oil change interval" is a load of BS though, absolutely do NOT do that if you want your car to go past 100k miles without burning a ton of oil.
