As an avid Nicca IIIF user I gotta say it’s a great deal to have. As a broke grad student, I really wanted a L mount lens camera, and since Leicas are out of the price range for me, I sought for a Nicca (and other clones you could find here in Tokyo). I got one in really good condition with a Nikkor HC 5cm F2 lens for about 300$ and it’s a work horse. Definitely want to try other lenses with it but boy is it a beauty, even with portraits.

As another comment on this very interesting video, I'd recommend looking at the Yashica rangefinders. One of Yashica's later rangefinders was the Yashica YE, which is a Barnack style camera, and as Yashica had purchased Nicca shortly before the YE came out, it feels to me like Yashica's YE is a refinement/variation of Nicca's later Barnack style cameras, with the same basic design, plus a film advance lever. I think its very nice camera. Prior to adopting Nicca's approach, Yashica had earlier came out with the Yashica 35, which is something of a Contax clone, but with a fixed lens. The Yashica 35 also is very nice camera, with a smooth film advance, a film advance lever, a very nice, soft shutter sound, and a solid rangefinder patch. Finally, the Yashica YF is Yashica's spin on Nicca's last design, the Nicca 33, and leaving the Barnack style behind, was something of an effort to match Leica's M3. The YF is also a very nice camera, with a big and bright viewfinder with nice bright framelines, although the rangefinder patch -- incorporated into the viewfinder as with Leica's M cameras -- is a bit disappointing and certainly not as nice as the Leica M. Yashica's lenses for these cameras are also very nicely made and appear very sharp, and the YE and YF use Leica's same thread mount, so these cameras will take any LTM threadmount lenses.

I've inherited 2 Zorki cameras - the 3 and 4K. And while the model 3 is quite unusable, course the camera had sitting on the shelf for some 60+ years, and I can't find mechanic who would fix her (for reasonable amount of money), the 4K is from 1978, with pristine Jupiter 8, and in (almost) perfect working order. As a matter in fact, your videos nudged me to take that camera more often on a walk...

That was very a very interesting comparison. I have a number of these cameras, but the only ones I use are a Leica iii, and a very early Leica ii that was converted to a iii somewhere along the line. Both are pretty ugly looking, but work great The Zorki C that was supposedly serviced before being sold by a Russian vendor arrived inoperative, completely jammed. I also have a Nicca that needs a shutter service, but my repair tech didn't want to work on it and returned it. I have several Canon clones that work well but have very squinty viewfinders, and pointy bits that rub me the wrong way. All in all, the Leica's turned out to be the best deal, even considering the cost of service which both needed. Your iif is really lovely.

The Nicca has been described as so close a cone of one of the Leica models that the internal parts can be interchanged between them. At last in the US, I doubt you can acquire a Nicca for the price he suggests. The Leica IIIg carries a price tag these days well above its prior models because relatively few were made and they combine the mechanics of the prior model with the much improved viewfinder optics of the Later M models. In college in the mid-1960s, a dorm roomate had one - very nice camera.

Nice piece, Matt. I see you have a Canon LTM body other than the 7. Looks like an L2 (no selftimer, cloth shutter and no X setting on shutterspeed dial), but maybe an L3, (cannot see if flash port is present), be great if you would review it. Regarding the Nicca (also sold in USA by Sears under their brand as a Tower) the lens to use with it is the one it most commonly came with , the Nikkor 50/2 HC, a superb optic, a hard coated clone of the prewar Zeiss Sonnar f2. The Nikkor can focus to about 0.5m and in my experience focuses by rangefinder a couple of inches closer than 1 meter, but certainly very useful with mirrorless digital cameras. A nice pair with a Summitar(or Canon 50/1.8) giving you the choice of Sonnar or Planar looks... An early 1950's consumer choice of a Leica IIIc with Summitar vs a Nicca 3S(Tower) with Nikkor in retrospect was a difficult one to make considering the price differential. Leica reputation, lack of knowledge about the Nicca/Nikkor and anti-Japanese product bias played into consumer decisions at the time...

Thanks Adam, yes correct an L2 or L3.. I'd need to look at eBay listing. I only bought it for the hard to find lens so I've never used it. (I got the 40mm filter set too which was good). Yes I bought the Nicca for the 50/2 lens :) You see a pattern here! An excellent lens and you will see a video to come on this. Thanks for the Sonnar vs Planar point / reminder. Yes the Summitar is sub-standard vs these mentioned lenses - ie. soft. But you will see that to come too. I found it can be useful for some skin types.

To answer your question in the video...yes...I have some Leica clones. Before I came across the great deal on my Leica iiif, I was buying into the Russian clones and lenses. I have a Zorki 1, Zorki 4, Zorki 4k, and a Fed 2. My favorite of those is the Zorki 1. Other than the shutter sound being louder, it feels great just like my iiif. For lenses, I have many Industars...all of them 50mm...the 22, the 50 and the 61. I then have some Jupiters...the 3, 8 and 12. I haven't tried all of the lenses on the Leica...only the Industar 22 and 50...which work well. I've heard that the Jupiters may have some focusing issues when used on the Barnack Leica cameras, so I figure that it will give me a good reason to shoot the Zorki and Fed cameras. 😊

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom If you are going to get a Zorki, I'd recommend the Zorki 1, then the Zorki 4...then the Zorki 4K. Although the 4k has a winding lever, it feels cheaper. It could just be my copy though. I have found that I prefer the winding knob on these cameras anyway.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I totally agree...because as I age, and my eyes don't cooperate like they used to, the rangefinder is critical. I like having the diopter adjustment on the iiif. Did you tried Zorki 3 or Zorki 3M ? It is definetly the most nice looking soviet LTM cameras. Technically it is compact version of Zorki 4 but without flash sinc and selftimer.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Peter, no I bought the Zorki 4 but still need to film test it. Is the viewfinder good in the 3s? That bit is the post important to me - VF/RF. Maybe I need to get one :)
@1peterq
@1peterq 2 жыл бұрын
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Techically Zorki 4 is a Zorki 3C with added self-timer (Zorki 3C is a Zorki 3M with flash sync and ugly top cover. Zorky 3M is Zorky 3 with combined shutter dial for long and short shutter speeds). So they share the same viefinder wth 1.15x maginfication (better than ANY Leica) - the best (by picture ) VF for mass soviet RFs. But RF spot is not the best - FEDs and Kiev have better one. And of course no framelines in a viewfinder - in Soviet rangefinders with interchangeble lens this feature was only in a small numbers of models - Leningrad, Drug, Kiev-5 and FED-5C. And only FED-5C can be taken in a considerations for shooting today. All the rest models had BIG problems with reliability, was made in a small numbers and now are interested only for collectors, not shooters.
@1peterq
@1peterq 2 жыл бұрын
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom If you are paying most attention to VF - try to look for overview of Leningrad camera. You will definetly like the view! But don`t mention it for buing to shoot - it was "reporters camera" so it has no frame by frame manual drive, only spring drive for a buch of shots (8-10). And due to this spring drive the mechanism is heavely stressed even on normal shooting - usually it leads to RF disalignment after 2-3 rolls of film. Also this RF had own space construction frame made from silumin alloy instead of steel and these frames usually are broken - and no way for fixing it, only frame replacement (taken from another one Leningrad) . So it is hard to find camera with extremily hard to find working RF - and even after it you have absolutly no warranty that it will not become fatal dead on a next roll of film with a neglectible hope for repaire. But the picture in RF is SUPER. :)

Hi Matt, maybe you can do a comparison between a leica m2/3/4 and the cannon p/7. Is there any difference between the viewfinder of those cameras. I just bought a canon 7 with a canon 50mm 1.8 ltm but the lens had some minor traces of haze and have send the hole kit back to the seller. Is it worth spending the extra cash on a leica m and leica 50mm lens or is the canon as good as the leica? Thanks

Maybe I will try to do the Canon this week.. Canon lenses can be good but may have haze. Leica cameras are my preference by far but check the Voigtlander Bessa videos I did. They can be good. Maybe Bessa R + Canon lens or Bessa T.. see videos as each has own quirks. M3 is best.
