The reason for moving in the fall is quite simple. Peonies root a lot during the time the ground is cold but not frozen which is mid to late fall and very early spring. That is the time when there is no leaves growth so the roots are less needed (foliage is falling and not growing) and they will regrow easier.

With shrubs I don't worry too much about getting it level - it will level itself out as it grows. But depth is important. My soil is also clay - just keep adding organics - it gets better.

Hello Thanks so much for this valuable info. I live in chicago and I would love to grow a peony in a pot. My zone is 5b. Is it possible to grow it in a pot?

Yes - use a bigger pot.

I transplanted my 15 yr old tree peony last spring prior to educating myself more. I now notice it is struggling. The leaves look like they are stressed like chlorosis. I know it wants a neutral ph soil but is it possible near by fertilizer got to it or that it's adjusting to its new home? Should I give it lime or add something else to soil. Any advice would be greatly welcomed.

Just give it time. Peonies have vey large root systems and moving them usually removes a good part of them.

I am moving my 20 year old tree peony in the next few weeks as well. Was it hard to move your peony? How deep or spread did the root go?

@@vivianli596 just be prepared it's a slow process back to what it is now. I have not seen blooms not for 2 summers. I by no means am an expert on this. What I will recommend is to dig the drip line (think where rain would run off of an umbrella) to make sure you get as much of the roots safely without damaging. Water well days before and don't take it out and transplant on a really hot day. Best of luck. They are so precious and worth trying to save.

My tree peonies are about 5 ‘ tall. Still okay to transplant? Cut back??? Thank you.

Just move them. If they have too much top growth the plant will self prune them.

I understand from the comments here why peonies need to be transplanted in the fall, but what if I have already done this in the late spring/early summer? How do I look after them thereafter? Don't I need to water and fertilize them more often? Please help. Thank you!

You don't need to do anything special.

I can see on the dates that this will reach you a year too late but let's say it for someone else. Planting any Peony in Spring is perfectly possible, it is just not ideal. All you need to do is help them getting through summer with frequent but not excessive watering. Even if they go through a tough summer they will come back strong next Spring. The only drawback of Spring planting is that you will get a full year of bad performance, that is all. I have done it. And all that talking is just for tubers and bare roots. A potted already rooted plant can be put in the ground any time you buy it
