12,000 Pound Rated Winches: Smittybilt, WARN, Badland (Harbor Freight), SuperWinch, Mile Marker Maverick, Zeak, and Rugcel. Not all the winches survived this test with two winches experiencing rope failure. Winches tested for 50 foot no-load pull speed, force to unroll rope, time to pull ¾ ton truck up a hill 20 feet, time to pull 6,000 pounds a distance of 4 feet, maximum pulling force on final wrap. As much as I respect that, I don't have a problem with sponsored posts when they're honest about the sponsorship. There are very few who do it right, but Linus of LTT will often eviscerate a sponsor during testing if their product isn't up to snuff. I'd rather see him get paid for his hard work, time, and dedication. I appreciate that he does it all. I mean, his main source of income is Patreon (outside of personal career). At worst, He's barely cracking $2450 a month, which isn't much and at most, around $10k a month which sounds like lot, until you consider all of the testing, products, and time he has to put into one video, let alone 4-5 a month on top of farm and other expenses. Basically, sponsored doesn't mean unbiased, nor does it mean a bad video.

Could it be that PF receives krypto funds for promoting brands into his off shore account? But how much would they pay (including all materials, merchandise, miscellaneous etc. used in testing) 50-60K per test, 100-150K? I noticed his channel is not monetized? If he monetized & accepted non-relevant sponsors he’d make way more than these under-ether bribe payments. Not saying he does accept them, there are still honest people who don’t crave extravagant life. But curious about monetization.

Now that you've done this winch test, I think you should do a synthetic winch line test. There are so many out there for so cheap that seem like they'd break at weights way lower than what they're rated for. Synthetic winch lines are so much safer than cable, and are becoming really popular.

One of the most critical tests of a winch is whether it survives working under water. Recovering your vehicle from a mud/water hole is a huge reason why we purchase a winch. My last purchase was based on an old winch shootout from Petersen’s off road magazine; it’s worth a google and read!

yeah when i sank my for 92 f150 i was glad when my badland still worked under water got me out and then we had a bad flood i was out pulling cars out and other things for 3 days for 300 bucks i was impressed with it

I've had the Zeak on the front of 2 Jeeps now. Countless rescues, been out in the elements without a cover for over a year, and the dang thing just keeps impressing me. Gotta admit, I was still surprised it did so well in your tests. It's a definite budget power house! Unfortunately looks like they're no longer available though.

The Harbor Freight APEX seems to be on everyone's "Beat This" list. One thing I would like is the length of each rope. This can vary quite a bit. This was VERY informative, Thank You!

Totally agree I was disappointed not to see the Apex here. A 5k pull untill over heating would be a great test to see their endurance. Then possibly do it again 5 or 10 times in a row to see how they handle repeated abuse. Was very excited to see this video but I don't feel any closer to knowing if I want the Apex or the Smittybuilt, the smittybuilt is the cheapest name brand winch with a lifetime mechanical warranty

If you're buying a throw away winch (very few repair parts available) it makes more sense to get the cheaper version. Also I have seen pictures and videos of the Apex case breaking. One of them is posted on the wranglerstar KZfaq channel.

I'm mostly retired but I have worked part time for a lawn and garden shop doing pick up and delivery. The trailer is 10 years old and has a 4000 lb Warn winch. I can tell you from experience that it has never failed us and it gets used almost every day. Having said that, I have a 3500 lb Badlands winch on out SXS for occasional use and it works fine as well. I love these videos. Thanks.

Project farm responds with equal emotion typically which makes me think it's a full time employee or multiple employees. Your reviews are the best. I have been looking at winches in this class. The Zeak was on my list and a few days after this was posted, the winch sold out on Amazon. I don't think this was a coincidence, your reviews have an undeniable impact. Keep up what your doing, your content is some of the best of it's type on KZfaq! I ended up getting the Zesuper 12k. Amazon gave me a flashdeal that I couldn't turn down ($288 with tax and S&H). Since I won't be able to mount this to my GX470 right away, I made sure to bench test the winch as the 30 day refund period might end before it is mounted. Everything worked well under these conditions. The winch was smooth, quiet, and the rope pulled out easily.

How do you like the winch you bought at this point? I bought a Jeep that had a Badlands ZXR on it (same one from this video) and it works fine, I just want a synthetic line and wireless remote. I can get the wireless controller for mine at Harbor Freight for around $40 it seems, so I may just do that until my steel cable frays. What's your opinion on that?

Great video...as always. I've been winching trucks out of stucks since the 1970s. Back then, Warn or PTO winches were the pretty much the only game in town. As more brands appeared, quality seemed to suffer. I replaced a 1980s 8000 pound Warn winch that saved my axe a bunch of times. It cooked wiring harnesses, alternators and broke cable but ALWAYS got me out. The clutch assembly finally exploded on it's last pull. I replaced it with a Superwinch (2010ish) 8500. It wouldn't pull like the Warn and burned out on it's first rodeo. I replaced it and after about 10 moderate pulls, the replacement has started to smoke. I now always run a block pully on my winch to double the pulling power so as not to tax the winch. It also slows the pull by half that lets you see things going array. The most critical thing to me in a winch is not line speed or pulling power (they all lie). It is RELIABILITY. That winch has to work after sitting out in the weather or driving through hours and hours of road spray or caked in goo. I would love to see these winches pulling to destruction. That's not the evil voice in my head but strictly a desire to see some sort of endurance/reliability/quality of each. Pulling that much amperage also fries everything in the charging circuit. And the thermal overload protection kicks many of them off before you get out of the hole you're in. Those without will have smoke rising from the alternator and battery cables as they melt down. My Dad's old oil field Dodge Power Wagon with a brutal PTO could bend that truck in two if needed. And it would do it until you ran out of trucks to bend.

If you're going to test the Badland against the upper end Warn and Super Winch you have to use the Apex Badland. That is the one Harbor Freight considered comparable to Warn.

The Warn VR Evo is their budget option. The Zeon, M12, G series are all higher end Warn winches.

@@whiskeykilmer1866 Nope. The higher end winches are made in Oregon. I actually have the 12k Warn VR Evo, synthetic line on a Land Rover. It had a bad solenoid out of the box, but Warn sent out a replacement immediately, & it works fine now.

I've heard that there is a huge strength difference between low end and name brand synthetic rope. Since 2 failed in your tests, it would be cool to see a few brands tested.

There can be but biggest difference I have noticed is due to the diameter rope used. Some sellers may save a few $$ by going with smaller rope. But it's cheap and easy to swap out for bigger.

For the most part, they are all pretty similar with the exception of some cheaper winches using smaller lines. There are companies like master pull that have genuinely stronger and better built ropes but you will pay a cost because they can be well over $600-$800 for a 100’ rope.

This test was great! I would love to see you do this test again in the future, but strictly with synthetic line. Throw in a few real world scenarios like a stuck truck or winching over an obstacle. Some brands to add to the list would be Comeup, and Harbor Freight's Badland 12K Apex winch.

I've had my Zeak on the front of my Yota for about 1.5years now. One, I didnt expect too see it in this test, and two I didnt expect it to actually perform but its been a great winch. I dont use it a ton but it does come in handy, and the rope and wireless remote out of the box is a nice feature.

Ive been a die hard badland guy for years. This really makes me rethink my loyalties. Feel it was kinda let down by the poor quality plate though. I dont trust any mounting plates currently on the market. Im a fabricator so i designed my own that ive rated for 12,000lbs and ive had over 14,000lbs on it and it hasnt broken. Im sure who ever made the ones you had would rate mine over 30,000lbs 😅 Id be very happy to donate one to your channel! Would find it cool for you to test it against all the others on the market. Im just a joe blow, not a company or manufacturer so its not like im sponsoring you. Just think it would be cool to see something some guy makes in the garage for $25 beat out everything companies make that cost 4 times as much.

I've had that Zeak for just under two years. It's pulled several cars out of ditches, righted a rolled Deere and dragged several dozen 10ft, 26" pine logs up the side of a canyon. Haven't had an issue with it yet. Great tests.

I sure, do enjoy watching the tests you put all these products through, I bought a Badland Apex 12,000 a while back and was curious how well it would perform, I never would need 12,000 for what I do. I just wanted overkill to make sure it would do what I need and it does, I tell my friends about your channel and show them some tests you do and they are impressed every time. When Warn was made in the US, they were tops in consumer products but Ramsey's US made commercial products were better. Milemarker's hydraulic products were great but expensive and complex to install on a vehicle. MMs electrics were subpar at that time. A Warn US 8274 is always gonna be darn tough to beat. A Warn US M8000 is a lot of winch for the money. All the cheap chinese junk is junk so spend what you can and buy the warranty you need.

I love your reviews I would suggest comparing the Badland 12K Apex winch - thats the one Matt's Offroad (another famous KZfaqr) is using. It would be amazing to see any performance differences that winch may or MAY NOT have. In addition it would provide perspective of what can be achieved in real situations with the Badland 12K Apex as the baseline from Matts recoveries.

Keep in mind that Matt also ditches the stock line and installs a Freedom Recovery line. It would be interesting to see what the winches in this video that did break their lines, could do with an upgraded line.

One thing to add here is the Warn EVO is the cheap Chinese made model they sell. If you get the zeon it is larger, designed completely differently and USA made. Would be cool to see you test that one at some point.

Such a great test video! My OpenRoad 9500 on a receiver mount has been working great on several recoveries. Maybe include this brand’s 13000 next time. I use an App to estimate pull force required for a disabled vehicle. It greatly overestimates needed force compared to the results of your meticulous and honest tests.

I appreciate your honesty & this test. The weak link is always the rigging. I spent 31 years as a towing professional. Most Light Duty tow trucks use Hydraulic 8,000 lbs. winch with 3/8" 6X37 IRP wire rope has a break of 16,560 lbs. Working Load Limit is 3.5:1 ratio or 4,250 lbs. Exceeding the WLL is abuse of the rope. This is why professional operators will put a block in the line to reduce line tension & stay within WLL.

Travelers brand stuff from Tractor Supply would be a good addition. Also, not sure how you could test this idea... but LED off-road lights. So many options, very cheap to very expensive. Some last on ATV and off-road vehicles just days. Some last months. Could have a rabbit hole worth of testing on that idea. Great job as always and dearly appreciated by your followers. I love that you do these videos! Especially how you come up with tests to put the products head to head! At least with the winches it seems like there should be a longevity test. You’d expect a new winch could get you out of a jam. But what you really need is a reliable winch time after time. When you need it most!

@@dubious6718 He never exceeded the ratings of the winches. That's all they should worry about. I really would want to know if any of these winches actually could meet the rating. It would probably only happen with only a single layer of wire/rope on the drum, but even so it seems a lot of them wouldn't meet the rating as the wire/rope broke well below the rated pull. Also how much abuse do the wire/rope withstand? I know that if it starts to "climb" and chinch on the drum it can weaken the wire. Are any of them better at preventing this than the rest? Way way back when I was a kid I remember that there were a winch at a marina that had a mechanism that controlled how the cable was spooled up just to make sure that it didn't chinch or climb over itself. To work It did require that the cable had some tension when it was spooled up, but once the slack was taken out it carefully directed it back and forth over the drum. This was about fifty years ago so I can't remember the details of how it achieved this, but I do remember standing beside it watching as the cable was unspooled and spooled back up again over and over again.

For round 2 couple of interesting things to test are: What happens if you put larger gauge battery leads to the winch, or change the solenoid-winch wires as well. The branch winch I currently use, have this line in their owners manual that if you want to use it in racing / competitive environment purchase a 50mm2 or 70mm2 cables. Also it would be cool to see some other 'destructive' tests like when and if the breaks fail - if you use a winch a line line to pull another vehicle with your car (just driving, not using it as a winch but just as a rope). For some reason all the user manuals don't allow to do that. And cold and damp testing would be interesting also. I've had many cheaper winches fail in winter times here in Estonia where we sometimes have -25C degree weathers.

Those would be interesting to see! My guess is vibrations on the road resulting in the gears shifting to allow the "rope" of the winch to lengthen slowly, resulting in Bad Things (tm) happening after a point in time when the thing you're pulling is on a rope two meters long instead of a tow-hitch that pivots at an easily accounted for point.

Besides some racing/competitive environment it seems odd that speed of pull was so emphasized, most speeds are sufficient & slower/variable is often ideal & safer. Reliability & durability are more important, but more difficult to test for, am I missing something?

@@assertivekarma1909 depends on what kind of stuff you do. If you rarely use your winch, line speed isn't as important. If you like to push the limits and have to use it a lot more often, it matters a lot. If speed didn't matter you could get a much cheaper winch and just run a snatch block as well (more than doubles the pull, 2x for the snatch block, plus a bit for having less cable on the drum)

This was a great comparison. Good work! That said, I found myself in need of a winch for my trailer and found that the Zeak was no longer available (as of 07.07.23). I ended up going to HF and getting a couple Badland ZXR12000 units, one for the trailer and the other for my F350. I needed something pretty quick (availability-wise) for a project I’m dragging home, and the price seemed right enough to get a second one for the truck. It seems there are quite a few cheap winches on the jungle site, but it’s hard to reasonably gauge what’s what without actually committing to buying one. Anyway, thanks for doing what you do. It helps tremendously when making these not-so-cheap purchases, knowing I’m getting my money’s worth.

Fascinating test! I live in the past, and didn’t realize some winches I’d considered American are now made in China. I have the HF Badlands 12,000 with remote, and it works fine. But due to the current trend of saving money and drum space by carrying only 65’ of line, I had to go back to the HF Road Shock 10,000 I bought around 2013 (to replace a Ramsey REP8000 stolen off my car trailer), when I needed the 100’ of line on the older winch to reach some logs. Like you, I’ve purchased a receiver mount, but put more faith in the heavier receiver mounts I’ve fabricated. I believe all or nearly all electric winches are rated with one wrap on the drum and all conditions ideal. PTO winches have honest ratings; my old 10,000 lb. Ramsey really is made to pull 10,000 lbs. and with a 304 International behind it can be expected to pull until something breaks. I’ve used Kevlar straps in the industrial world (straps to lift a 135 ton generator rotor are a fraction the weight of the old steel cable straps), but I live in a world of abrasion and rough treatment, so I stick with steel cable. Back in the day the 10,000lb Ramsey was the winch to have. The Warn was the economy brand back then. They always seemed to have solenoid issues, were slow, and had an issue with free spooling under a heavy load. The Ramsey had a planetary fear system that never failed.

What a great demonstration!! I have an old mile marker that I use for loading cars on a trailer. Bought it used, it didn't come with solenoids, I emailed mile marker to see about some replacements, no reply. That left a bad taste in my mouth, but I went ahead and made my own setup with ford starting solenoids......and the winch is B-A-D, BAD! I haven't found anything yet that it won't pull! Still not giving mile marker my money though.

This is good info for 'out of the box' performance. One real test is how they hold up. We do not have a single Warn winch in our 29 member off road club. The reason is they seem to fail just when you need them most. And that is quite often. We have three Smittybuilt and I do not remember ever having a problem with them. The most popular winch is the Badland Apex. We never have had a failure with them. We DO break winch ropes and cable quite often. The ropes go most of the time after some chaffing. The cables, we have learned, MUST to be replaced when about ten or twelve strands break. We roughly figure we lose about 100 lbs of pulling power per strand. The fact that NONE of the winches made their rated 12,000 lbs of pull is very telling.

They didn't make their rated 12k because that is only valid with a single wrap rope. More wraps, the lower they go as the spool gets bigger and the leverage decreases. To get 10k with 5 wraps is well beyond spec.

YOU do us consumers a great service, and I appreciate the work you do. So I think you should test tool boxes, since folks (like me) are starting to come to you for tool recommendations, they’re going to need something to put them in. I’ve noticed there’s 4 different categories, open top tool caddies, traditional tool boxes, rolling tool boxes, and big tool chests and come in metal and plastic materials I figure you could make it a series. You can measure stats, size, volume, dimensionality ( length, width, height). You can test lid/handle construction, latch construction, insert construction, durability, how many tools they can actually carry (maybe hand tools vs power tools), and how much weight they can carry without breaking. You can test roller quality for rolling and tool chest formats as well as how easy they are to knock over etc.
