7 reasons why arborist wood chips are the best wood chip mulch for your vegetable garden:
0:34 they support a broad diversity of soil life and promote healthier plants
1:08 their diversity in materials and particle sizes results in less compaction compared to uniform mulches
1:32 they are large enough to remain on the soil surface
2:03 they don't tie up nitrogen in the root zone
2:50 they break down slowly
3:27 they are local and sustainable
3:53 they are the least expensive option

Getting arborist mulch in our area is very competitive. I called the county as well as every arborist in our area for over a year. On a day this spring I saw an arborist chipping trees near a home where I deliver eggs. I went home and made cookies for the guys, and brought them right back with some lemonade. Now, I have a great contact for chips and they've delivered a few times this year. I always bring out some sort of snack or drink for them when they deliver. It is well worth the effort to search out arborist chips.

If you get woodchips that don't have leaves or are too finely ground, put down a layer of leaves/leaf mold first and then the chips on top. Will prevent significant N tie up if that's a concern (it's not permanent), and in no time will mix to get close the consistency of what results from arborist chips. Cheers!

I like how you mention about the various size of the mulch. I notice alot of people sift their compost and i think this is not good as it doesnt provide the aeration that bigger particles provide. Various size materials in compost also pipelines the available nutrients as bigger chunks break down later while smaller chunks provide nutrients now.

Great video :D I recently got my very first little load of wood chips, as we had an arborist chop down a big tree that was getting a bit dangerous. Super happy about it! And as they're in a big pile they're composting and even melting the snow on top. It's so fascinating I think. I'm looking for a video of yours, maybe you know which one it is? I've rewatched all your videos with garlic in the title (or all I could find at least), but I just can't find the one where you explain how it works that you can't develop a variety of garlic by just selecting the biggest cloves from the biggest bulbs and plant those. Maybe what I'm looking for was just a segment in another video? If you remember I'd love to know! But of course if you don't that's all right! Happy holidays Patrick, and a joyful relaxing time to you and your family. :)
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Inger! Congratulations on the big wood chip delivery! All garlic cloves from a single bulb are genetically identical and will produce genetically identical garlic when planted. So, it's not possible to develop a new variety by selecting certain cloves. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

arborist trimmings are deffinatly the best thing ever because of the variety and area they cover its just a shame that often the trees come from the side of the road that need trimming or have fallen and are probably caked in road dust, i no my pile came off a main road, i composted it but still its nerving, just like the paint chips in all the compost i planted my fruit trees into and all the random stuff thats in the soil in my raised bed like plastic wrappers and rusty old tools and lego pieces and batterys and all sorts from careless mowing and dumping in a pile which is now a vegetable garden lol, nervyyy, good thing i dont like vegetables and only like fruit since vegetables take it all up but fruit trees only take up tiny bit of it apparently, thats just led tho who knows about everything else, i hope itl be fine, just keep telling myself that if it was made on earth it can do back into the earth haha ;p maybe it could even be a good thing lol

Thanks for this video! I've been collecting wood chips from a local arborist dumping site. I've been concerned because the chips are of vastly differing sizes and several different types of wood. Also included are stems and leaves. Now I can rest easy since watching this tutorial on wood chips! Thanks! I do have a problem though. My neighbors dogs have been digging around my blueberry plants and other berries. I'm concerned that some of the wood chips have gotten mixed in with the root zone of the blueberries. If that is the case, what do you suggest I do to mitigate a depletion of the nitrogen around them?

Hi Patrick, great info on the wood chips. I have finally found where our City disposes of it’s trees they cut. When I called them about getting some wood chips I was told the pile was to hot and that I could get some in the spring. The pile I saw you gathering from - was that a before composting pile or after? Second, you mention using the wood mulch in your garden, but you only show clips of it being applied in the walkways. Do you ever use it in your beds? I know you mentioned pulling back the wood chips and making sure you plant below them, but was unsure if you meant in the beds or outside the beds like where you grow your berries and other things.

Any ideas about which compost is better to grow in? I use a mix of leaves, vegetable and fruit waste, brewery grains but was not successful last year. Soil test said I was lacking nitrogen so I trying cover crops. Charles dowsing uses old horse manure. What are your thoughts?
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Feefee! Leaves and food scraps make great compost. What happened with the brewery grains? Please tell me about your soil test. Most tests aren't able to truly determine soil nitrogen levels because nitrogen is too transient in the soil. My soil test also recommended adding nitrogen, but I never have. I would only add nitrogen if there were clear signs of a deficiency in plants. Cover crops and composted horse manure are both excellent choices.

I gather and shred baby Red Alder trees green, leaves and all, so there's little nitrogen draw, and compost the mulch for a few months before spreading or digging them in. A friend mentioned shredded ramial wood and I found a lot of science about it and in French bois raméal fragmenté. Takehome point is that green hardwood can rot fast and not draw much nitrogen because the lignin is still unseasoned. That is, if the wood and bark are still green the ramial wood appeals to a different range of composters, especially mushrooms, earthworms and generally a humic soil environment. I use a Mackissic SC800 hammer mill shredder and it comes out about perfect with the stock 1" screen. Research I read found that if some of the material comes through shredded a bit lengthwise and not always chopped to a uniform cube so to speak, the desirable mycelia spreads faster.

Thanks Patrick, How many years do they take to break down fully in a fertile zone 8 climate? 5 years? How thick of a layer would recommend around veggies garden?
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 6 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! 5 years sounds about right. If you need to add organic matter to the soil more quickly, I recommend making compost. We use wood chips on our walking paths, perennials, and large annuals, but not on intensively planted beds of smaller annuals. We add a few inches every year to the areas where we mulch with wood chips.

@OneYardRevolution

Hi Joseph! You definitely don't want to till them in, because that will tie up nitrogen. We use them mostly in perennial beds, but for annual beds, we just create an opening or furrow in the mulch to plant.

For the issue of surface nitrogen depletion, have you thought about scattering spent coffee grounds/tea leaves before putting down new arborist's chips to give the chips the nitrogen they need to break down without drawing it from the soil?
@dereksmalls6238
@dereksmalls6238 6 жыл бұрын
I normally put a layer of comfrey leaves down first before a woodchip mulch, it provides all the notrgen needed for the chips to breakdown and provides lots of great nutrients to the soil too!
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 6 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't be an issue since it's only on the soil surface. Coffee grounds and tea will also tie up nitrogen on the surface during decomposition, but that's fine too.

Do you find you need to remove material from paths every few years? Adding materials will slowly raise the level
@OneYardRevolution

I haven't had to remove any material from the paths. The volume of wood chips decreases dramatically as they break down.

Are woodchips beneficial to add to raised beds for planting annual veggies like tomatoes, okra, cucumber etc? We plan to cut down an old white oak tree in the summer and get woodchips, so I can get a good mix of green and brown from it. Plan is to add compost, and top off the raised beds with woodchips - about 4 inches next fall. Like Back to Eden method. What are your thoughts?
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, wood chips are excellent for annual beds. I mulch paths, perennials, and large annuals with wood chips. However, they don't work well on beds of intensively planted small annuals like carrots, beets, turnips, lettuce, etc. If you don't use intensive planting strategies like square foot gardening and instead plant in rows, you can use wood chips on all beds.

do you have softwood mulch? I'm a newbie, I read that it acidifies the soil, or everything will be fine? thank you!

Wood chips will not make soil acidic. You can use soft wood or hard wood. We use arborist wood chips, which are a mix.

I've heard that black walnut is terrible for garden use. 1. Do you think its as big of a deal as many people say? 2. If so how do you know your not getting black walnut in your wood chips? Thank you for your time
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 5 жыл бұрын
Black walnut wood chips can have an allelopathic effect temporarily. That effect dissipates as the chips decay. I wouldn't use chips that are 100% black walnut, but I don't worry if some of them are in the mix.

There's another drawback of our Ozzie countryside. Our first consideration isn't even the garden. We have to be so careful of termites. Even then, our gardens never (well, shouldn't) touch the house. That would allow access. We do have a couple of termite mulches to choose from - some the termites don't like (like red cypress) and others the termites just don't bother with (like sugar cane mulch). I tend towards sugar cane mulch because it breaks down quickly.

Hi Andy! Wood chips shouldn't attract termites. They don't prefer wood chips as a food source.

I live in California which has lots of palm trees. I've been told NOT to put palm mulch in our community garden. Why is that? I've been told the same thing about eucalyptus as well.
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 6 жыл бұрын
I'd use both palm and eucalyptus mulch. There's some concern that eucalyptus chips are allelopathic, but my understanding is that this isn't well supported by research. Eucalyptus wood chips are often used in gardens.

Do you recommend using wood chips in veggie containers ? How about with persimmons ? It seems like the ground under the persimmons is hard and clay rich . Would adding a thick layer of wood chips and watering more frequently be helpful? Thank you

Yes, you can use wood chips in containers and persimmons. Wood chips will help reduce the amount of watering required.

I wouldn't use 100% fresh black walnut mulch, but I don't worry if there's some in the mix. The allelopathic effect dissipates as the material breaks down.

You can add just wood chips, but it may take more than 6" to suppress weeds. Some people recommend as much as 12".

Hi Wendy! This article has ideas on how to keep raccoons out of the garden: www.almanac.com/pest/raccoons Assuming I'm doing what I can to exclude them from the garden, I wouldn't be too concerned them pooping in wood chips. I hope this helps!

Are there any types of wood that you do not recommend ? For instance do some types of wood contain diseases that could spread to the garden ? The local free wood looks like it comes from eucalyptus , sycamore , and some other trees. Thank you !
@OneYardRevolution
@OneYardRevolution 5 жыл бұрын
I'd probably avoid 100% black walnut wood chips because they can suppress plant growth when they're fresh, but as long as you use a variety of different woods, I wouldn't worry about black walnut being part of the mix.
