Great! sycamore a spirit tree in some countries.. One of your favorites. Very cool I have one I must cut down very tall. The grain is also very interwoven very nice looking but often not used for furniture because the grains warp the wood, a secondary wood as I have resurched. As a 16yr old I carved ahead from a piece that fell from a 50foot tree, it was old but carved very nice.. looking forward to slabbing my tree with a cheep electric saw!! and cust some choice pieces for carving geat video I'm stocked to get started.

Alder is more of a weed then it is a tree.. they don't normally live much more the 40 or 50 years.. I have heard it's good for carving and I know forsure they use it for furniture making. If it's left sitting too long after the trees been harvested it will start to turn black on you

I can highly recommend sycamore, as long as it's green. It gets pretty hard when it dries out. I found that river birch gets real fuzzy if you use a power tool on it. I had pretty good luck using knives on it.

I carved stuff out of eucalyptus and it was only later on that I checked the janka scale just to see how hard it was... ...3000 - 4000!

Thank you sir very informative your video is!!!! What is the janka hardness of white willow, box elder, American elm, ? I didn’t hear you say it..... thank you again!!!

Not all of the woods are listed on the Janka charts. Box Elder is around 750 - pretty soft. I would guess Elm and Willow are somewhere in that range as well.

Unless I’m really misinformed, poplar and aspen are the same thing, right? We’ve got such confusing naming conventions, we should almost be referring to each wood we use by its latin name for specificity’s sake.

Very informative! I'd love to hear more about your approach in working with these woods. Do you do you let the hardness dictate how shallow a carving will end up or do you only use softer woods for carvings where you will remove a lot of material?

Great vid. I have started to carve and make some hand tools. Wanted to ask if you carve wet or dry. I have tried both and i struggle with dry wood. Although i did use some harder species with my first projects. Fresh tree seems to be my choice but i do struggle slightly keeping it stable and check free. Homemade wax paste of the end grain has worked great.

I started carving using green wood. It is easier but the pieces are more prone to cracking. With good tools and techniques you can carve into harder wood well.

Silly question,,,Do you carve only Dried woods, or do you find fresh cut to be easier carving? I realize that may be a loaded question..
@IdRatherMakeItMyself-Net
@IdRatherMakeItMyself-Net 4 жыл бұрын
I do both. Green wood is easier to carve than dried wood but it can split on you as you dry and possibly ruin your carving.

I haven't tried white cedar. We have Eastern Red around me and I have carved a bit with it. It carves pretty nicely.

I have read about a tree that is very fast growing and supposedly straight grained and very light in color. I think it was called Paulina or something like that. Have you heard of it?

In Germany it is called Blauglöckchenbaum because of its blue flowers. I think it is also called Paulownia (tomentosa)
