The lampost challenge it's actually a method to immobilize POWs during wartime. At least, that's how it was taught in a magazine during WWII. The name of the magazine was "Get tough" and I think this guy Fairbairn (the one with the knife with it's name) was one of the authors. PS: English isn't my first language, so sorry.
