As for why Cool Friends is such a big deal: it's a skill gate. A test of what you should know. It tests your reaction time, pattern recognition, and your ability to pay attention to the entire screen at once instead of just your own square. All skills that you need to have to survive in bullet hells. It also does all the above with sick beats while trolling you to oblivion. Good luck. I'll give a thorough analysis on Cool Friends after you beat it, because it's easily one of my favorite well designed levels in the game. (Saying that is probably gonna get me shot, but whatever.)

When 2.2 comes out, levels like this will be possible with camera controls.

To answer your question, the coins aren't currency, they're your Beatpoints. It's just there to unlock bonus levels that aren't in the main story, and show off how skilled you are to other people online. And don't worry about online mode, it's 100% chill and worth doing after the main story mode (so you don't spoil yourself).

Btw on the "S ranking the overworld parts" thing, it HAS been done. There is a video called "Story mode no-hit run" it's over an hour long and yeah.

You can deactive it after beating the level you're struggling with... or be a noob like me and activate it to the end of the game lol Edit : oh and also the points you get from s-ranking are called BP, they're basically bragging rights. The S rank medals are just extra. you can only only play as a blue square on single player but you can play as a green pentagon, an orange pentagon, and a yellow triangle on multiplayer. Also you should probably beware of a level called the lunar whale. it’s right after cool friends. Edit: I forgot to mention that the lunar whale is optional out of 3 levels. each bring you one step closer to unlocking your next buddy.
