The Yucatán peninsula boasts some of the most beautiful archaeological sites in the Americas: the extraordinary Chichen Izta and Uxmal.
The Mayas are a native American people from Central America, founders of a brilliant civilization, which, after a period of very strong growth between the 7th and the 9th century AD, then gradually faded into insignificance.
The Maya civilization extended from the Mexican states of Chiapas and Yucutan, through parts of Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.
Chichen Itza, voted as one of the new wonders of the world, stands as an eloquent reminder of the former greatness of the Maya civilisation, which has now all but disappeared.
Here we find the great pyramid referred to as « Castillo » by the Spanish conquistadors. From its peak, you can see out over the buildings of the ancient city, the temples, the real tennis courts, and the pigeon houses, as well as the forest.
Uxmal, is another ancient Maya city, but this time, dating from the classical period. The architecture is typical of the Puuc style; facades at ground level are kept simple, with more elaborate decorations being kept for the upper levels.
The pyramid and the buildings of Uxmal are extraordinarily charming.
Yucatan also has a number of colonial towns.
The Spanish influence is visible to this day in the architectural style and lay-out of towns such as Mérida, Valladolid, and Isamal. As well as the streets lined with the pastel coloured houses typical of Yucatán, each town has a central square known as the Zocalo, bordered by the symbolic structures of colonial power, the governor’s palace, the town hall, and the cathedral

I'm Indian-American I absolutely admire Mexico and loved learning Mesoamerican history. From the Tikal-Calakmul wars, to the rise of the Nahua kingdoms in Nicaragua and El Salvador, it's such a rich and fascinating history. They gave the world tomatoes, avocados, vanilla, maize, jalapenos, tortillas, tamales, guacamole sauce, and chocolate. Much love to the Mesoamerican nations 🇮🇳❤🇲🇽🇬🇹🇳🇮🇭🇳🇸🇻

this one make me sad. almost all of the indigenous population was killed by the spanish church when we were conquered. and yet there are these churches :( and not much about the real people of yucatan, I mean the real real people. those information were buried by the church. mexicans suffered a mass genocide by the spanish church and no one remember. no gov public school teach the lenguage of the mayans anymore.

Such Beauty overshadowed by Spanish pain brought to the native people. So much taken and destroyed. A brilliant civilization.

The Mayans kept track of time via a calendar of 144,000 days. And Revelation talks about 144,000 saints. Yet you dismiss that information? (I will take ONE from a city and TWO from a family and bring them to Zion.) It is no wonder Jesus also said "the road is narrow and few will find it". We have allowed the world's spirit, the media, to blind our eyes.

It was a shame when the Yucatan was colonized because the Mayans knew more about the God of Israel than the settlers who went there (in all their "superiority"). The Mayan calendar is far more aligned to the word of God than "modern man" realizes...yet we depict them as heathen? SCOFF. I hope there are some keeping their beliefs and traditions alive. It would be a shame to throw away that ancient knowledge. 5125 years IS significant. There were 5040 years from Abraham to Jesus (14x3 generations) according to the gospel of John, yet you would throw away that knowledge to build "cathedrals"? This is why Jesus said: "You can forecast the weather but not the times".
