i wonder if people (metal heads that is) know how extraordinary this tape is. Obviously many do, but..... I am speechless. This is fucking outstanding. The exceptional thing about this tape apart that these are 17-19 years old boys writing and performing this music, is that my dearest Gylve is playing live, but also Ivar Enger aka Zephyrous, who people havent seen, more or less, for over 20 years. I am an 48 year old woman who has been into this stuff for a looooong time so I should know what Iam saying. There is no denying that Gylve Fenriz is a genius, and thats the reason why he is my alltime favorite with Pelle Ohlin as well (R.I.P). I am a black metal person but this is just sooo good. I actually get stomach pain when i see Gylve there.

I was a 14 year old little shit when I bought soulside journey in 1991 and it has been one of my favorite metal albums since. Fenriz was like the Neil Peart of death metal drumming during this period. Very creative beats and the riffs were so dark and haunting. Soulside is still my favorite darkthrone album. I only wish the goatlord material had a proper studio recording, but they were already heading in a more primitive direction later in 1991...

I remember I learned all their songs on guitar one summer, my band used to play some of their songs as warmup before practice ;) One odd thing: my tape has a better picture quality, but the sound here is better? But I don't have that hiss on my tape, which is strange. I can't remember if this was broadcast locally and I taped it off that broadcast? It was 26 years ago....I still have all Bootleg concerts that were taped back in those days. Come to think of it, I have many on DAT as well. I am far from a metal head or a death metal head. But i'm totally blown away by how amazing this is. Also how normal and quiet they look when they come out and then they play and sing like that. Wow!

Love there Death Metal Style too. I was always and forever into Death / Black Metal until my last Breath. Darkthrone kicks ass! "1990 to "1997" to me is true Darkthrone.

Great live. The material on Goatlord absolutely kills! In my opinion it's a shame they didn't record that as their second album before moving on..

This era of Darkthrone is much more very good death metal than black metal, thank you very much indeed for uploading and for the setlist.

I wish Darkthrone had kept this style. I remember when I got Blaze in the Northern Sky; I didn't even think it was the same band. I mean that album OK, but Soulside Journey had a great early death metal feel.

I agree. They should have never changed their sound. By the second album they were a totally different band in terms of sound.

@@dinkins335That's the point tho. Darkthrone realized they didn't want to play death metal - they wanted to play black metal (which is why their sound changed by the second album A Blaze in the Northern Sky)

Fenriz had the knack for the random odd variations even since the legendary Snowfall. Can't believe a bunch of 17 yr olds recorded that song in a bombshelter live take on some old ass tape player
