OH my, there are MANY more ways to cast on. I have a playlist here on KZfaq that highlights some of the other techniques, but there are also books out that show DOZENS of ways to cast on and to bind off. It is so much fun to try them all out!

Hi Carolyn, The Channel Island Cast-on is one of a few cast-ons traditionally used to make Guernseys (also known as ganseys). I don't know of a specific cast-on called the "guernsey cast-on" and can only suppose that they are one and the same. Thanks for watching my video! Beth

Thank you for doing this English style. Although I knit Continental it was easier for me to understand what you were doing when you did it this was as opposed to the Continental way. This is a very pretty CO. I'd like to use it on the next hat I make so I am hoping I can get the joining right when it comes to joining my work. I'm hoping it's as simple as a regular type CO.

Good to hear about the easy join because I'm about to embark on my first Gansey from your incredible book Beth. I haven't decided on yarn yet. Wendy 5 ply or Frangipani? Wendy has the four colors (I'd choose traditional Navy), Frangipani has beautiful greens and I love their olive colorway.

There are two versions, both "unvented" in the last few (five?) years. One is by Knit Purl Hunter and the other is by the women from Kelborne Woolens. Just search in KZfaq and you will find several videos on this technique.

Hi Beth, I'm about to start knitting a gansey, and the instructions for the cast-on were a tad opaque - you have made everything clear though. One question - it looks as if the original slip knot does not form a stitch, but is pulled off the other end of your double pointed needle - is this correct?

It's similar to Italian cast on with a little differences.

Apologies in advance if this is a very basic question (about to start my first gansey) but what do you do with the other two balls of yarn when you start knitting after completing the cast-on? Do you cut those two yarns and weave the ends in afterwards? Thanks in advance and thank you for this super useful video!

Yes that’s right. Leave the end connected that comes from the center of a ball and cut the other two yarns about 6” to weave in later. Enjoy knitting your gansey!

If you are doing this to work in the round do you still remove the first loop or do you incorporate it into the stitch requirement to go round and round fashion I guess you just drop it and let it hang and continue on with the next bitch being the first stitch on the road? Hope this makes sense and they asking.

Yes, when I work in the round, I drop off the big knot when I join the work circularly. (When I cast-on, I do not count the slip knot as a stitch.) Just sew the yarns in on the wrong side.
