“This is what Christmas looks like in Palestine, with occupation, with destruction, with the bombardment of children.”
To convey a message of solidarity, the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem has changed the traditional nativity scene which normally shows Jesus as a baby in a manger.
Instead, the church display shows Jesus dressed in a Palestinian keffiyeh in a pile of rubble, symbolising the destruction and death of children caused by Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
Pastor Munther Isaac added that festive celebrations at the church are cancelled this year and that they will focus on prayers instead.
Since 7 October, more than 16,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel, mostly women and children.
