I had the absolute privilege of seeing Bowie in NYC just a few days before this show. He had scheduled 3 shows at the Roseland ballroom, a small venue, to warm up for this show at Glastonbury. He was in fact quite ill and ended up cancelling the first 2 shows. So I got to see his only show in a venue that holds 3000 people, there were celebrities everywhere and people scalping tickets outside for 10 times the ticket price. He told us not to tell his doctor he was performing since he was supposed to be on vocal rest. Despite that he put on an amazing show with a few outfit changes and a ton of hits. He closed with Ziggy Stardust which he apparently hadn't performed in a long time. It was a magical night and I am thankful to this day to have experienced his brilliance in person.

This made me cry, David Bowie was such a powerful artist. As a freak kid in school, he had created a safe space for me to exist. I miss him SO very much. I love to see Beth be just as moved by this truly great man, as 5, 10, 13 and now 39 y/o me. Haha.

One of my favorite live Bowie songs is from The Concert For New York City,with just him and a toy piano on stage,still makes me cry 21 years later.💖💖💖

In the late 60's and much of the 70's, Bowie sang in higher ranges most of the time. He had at least a 4-octave vocal range back then along with masterful control of every little nuance of his voice. He could be operatic at times. This video was recorded in 2000. Bowie was in his early 50's. Check him out in his early 20's. Either way, David Bowie is the best of all-time.

Bowie- an icon. I love him so. I love how his singing was deeper as he got older. Another amazing singer is The Damned's Dave Vanian. Bowie my favorite artist of all time and The Damned my favorite band.

Thanks for this reaction/analysis. I seem to remember Bowie had a bad cold at the time of this performance and was relying on his vocal mannerisms more than usual. He was still smoking at the time as well. There are more pristine performances out there but you get a lot of personality in this version! Thanks again.

I’ve been a Bowie supporter since the first US tour, when he reminded me of Mary Martin (as Peter Pan). For another artist with a great voice and unique articulation, we love us some Jimmy Scott. Nothing Compares 2 U or anything else from the Holding Back the Years album.

Maaan... The 6 year old me is in that crowd somewhere, sat on my dad's shoulders cos everyone was up to their knees in mud, lol. It was a fkn special experience, and I think about it often. That Glastonbury magic is totally legit, by the way. The BBC has kinda done whatever they can to try'n diminish that over the last 20 odd years, but it's a real "time and place" kinda thing, and they'll never take the magic from the land itself. Weird stuff happens there 🤣

There is a comment from one of the best guitarists out there talking about the same sort of thing about guitar as I think you were expressing about vocals that has always stuck with me when I was learning to play. "Perfect control equals perfect freedom". He was saying that you need to get the basics down to a high level and then you can go crazy expressing yourself anyway you want.

Glastonbury is something magical, you must go there if you can, so much to see and hear. Bowie magic was just amazing considering he had the germ at the time, sign of a real pro. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen him with long hair 😂

I was lucky enough to be there, after a pretty epic journey from Scotland... I've been to a lot of gigs, and this was just...on another planet from anything else I've ever seen. Such a special experience. I was lucky enough to see him live another twice after this, both of which were 🔥♥, but there genuinely is something weird and amazing about Glastonbury, and it was just amazing to see Bowie headline it. Can't put my finger on it or try to explain it without sounding all hippy and 'woo' so I won't bother. It's just a special place and everyone should try to go once in their life. (Of course it's become a lot more expensive and hard to get tickets for...back in 2000 it was still possible to pay the Yardies a fiver and they'd let you in through the gap they'd prised open in the fence. So I'm told anyway... Honestly, if it was the last thing I'd seen or done on earth, I'd have died happy after this! 🧑‍🎤

Bowie was still getting over laryngitis when he sung this. The Live Aid version of Heroes is probably the definitive version.

Glastonbury, I've been to 8, it is all it certainly an experience, the scale is mind boggling, the variety outstanding (food and music). I found myself going more to smaller stages each time I go (there are over 100 stages). Damned sight less midges than Scotland for sure ;) You won't remember much of your first one as you will wonder about in a bit of a daze as everything going on. You will enjoy your 2nd one much more.

A great performance to be sure, but if you want see some of his vocal chops at their best, check out his live performance of "Under Pressure", sung with - not Freddie Mercury - but with his bass player, Gail Ann Dorsey. Fucking amazing!

For your own interests, check out a live 1978 version sometime… when the song was first performed… the original arrangement, plus he was much more of a belter when he was younger.

Related to him creating Heroes next to the Berlin Wall, he also made a German language version of the song, Helden. I only knew about the English language version until I picked up the Sound + Vision box set (which was released when he was doing his tour of the same name). That box set includes a lot of his best work up to that point, but he specifically included Helden as the representative version of Heroes on that set.

I actually was there! We only drove down to see this in a clapped out Austin Allegro, that car was really old 10 years before. Maybe 20? Lol. We had some friends working security and after parking on a security guards foot, ( on hill and brakes were shocking), we found a way in! Gotta say though that first half of set had us all rocking but then switched to newer, bit dreary stuff, and lost the crowd a bit? The best bit was on way back to the car, thankfully still where we left it. Nearly everyone else had gone for a piss but I ,walking ahead, had to cross a wooden bridge, over what was once a scream but now a sewer. There was this guy, totally out if it, welding a chrome table leg about like a sword/light saber! I thought to myself "Bloody Hell! I'm in a scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail? So I stopped start if the bridge and puffed on cigarette. Light saber guy walks across to me and I said alright mate? What's with the light saber? Unintelligible stuff but I heard him say bashing people! I said what just any people or bad people? He nah only bad guys. Ok so am I OK to cross the bridge of doom? He yeah mate you're cool. Thanks. My parting shot was? I wouldn't be so sure about the next bunch to cross here though? Bowie was okay but that dude on the bridge made Glasto for me.

Good evening, I have been listening to voice coach videos. I find a wide variety of artists however I can’t find anyone who has reviewed the King of country music George Strait. I recommend his songs “Troubadour” or “Give it all we got tonight” either the official music video or when he sings it at AT&T stadium.

I think more often than people think the risky notes come when an artist has gains a footing in the industry or with the audience. With Bowie he always had that style, but taking your style to it´s maximum forcing the audience to really listen to the complete arrangement is rare or difficult to navigate.

David Bowie had music in 70s that was popular with some Rock fans. Then in the 80s he grew into more mainstream. Spiders from Mars and Aladdin Sane are my favorites. Bowie deserves a tribute. Thanks for giving this to him.

what year was this performance? his hair was much longer than when i saw him in the 90s with Nine Inch Nails. what an amazing show *that* was. they never stopped playing. to transition from Bowie to NiN, band members would just swap out during Bowie's songs, until all Bowie's band was gone and it was just Bowie and NiN, playing Bowie's music, minus Trent. then Trent came out, and they one song together, and Bowie left the stage until it came time for the encores. it was truly theatrical and amazing.

If you would like to hear David go high, give a listen to "Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing reprise" off of the "Diamond Dogs" album from 1974. I really wish you would because I would like to know what David's vocal range was and this particular song displays it better than any other. (Great analyses! Keep up the good work!)

I grew up listening to David Bowie who unfortunately died of brain cancer before he could accept his Grammy Award for Best Album so his son Duncan Jones did on his behalf
