The beginning of this song (not sure about the war-like section after) is lyrically a segment from the Norse poem Vóluspá, the very popular poem about a Vólva (a witch essentially) who tells Odinn and the rest of the gods in Ásgard their fates, which eventually leads to the passages we know as the prophecy of Ragnarok. Wardruna has the full version of this song (titled Vóluspá) on their Skál album, which was released in 2018. The war-like section after was used as part of his composition for the History channel's TV show Vikings. His song Helvegen, a song from their Runaljod - Yggdrasil album and a skaldic version on their Skáld album, was also featered in the Vikings TV show when funerals take place. This is because Helvegen is about an individual's path to Valhól (Valhalla) and leaving their legacy behind for future generations. Wardruna is a fantastic group and I've been listening to them for about 5 years now. My family on my mom's side is dominately Scandinavian (mostly Norwegian, Icelandic and Danish) so anything that has musical roots from there is always so powerful for me. Thank you so much for those who recommend Norse music and thank you Beth for your reactions to them :).

Joshua Bishop Thanks for the extensive background commentary on the origins of the song/saga. Although the History Channel’s Viking Production has taken much liberty with historical accuracy in some areas it has opened up a new appreciation for the importance of their lasting historical legacy. As a result of my own genealogical research I have become aware that my West German Rhineland Ancestry goes further back into Scandinavia which we were unaware of. Thanks again.

For any interested the verses he sings from Völuspá are the following: 45 Brœðr munu berjask ok at bönum verðask, munu systrungar sifjum spilla; ... 47 Skelfr Yggdrasils askr standandi, ymr it aldna tré, en jötunn losnar; ... 45 Brothers will fight each other And be each other’s bane Sisters' sons will ruin kinship; 47 Shakes the ashtree Yggdrasill standing Groans the ancient tree And the giant is loosened

'Helvegen' (The Way to Hel) is about one's journey to Hel, which is where most non-fighting folks end up. Unlike Xian "Hell", Hel is not necessarily a bad place. In various text, Hel (or rather Helheim) is describef as having abundant life, a continuation of one's previous life on Midgard, if you will. Valhalla is reserved for the warriors who died in battle, *after* Freya gets her first pick and takes those first picked with her to live in Folkvangr. 'Helvegen' isn't necessarily supposed to be from the viewpoint of a "warrior" who's dying on a battlefield, but rather one who has lived a long life, and now that its ending, is contemplating if they've left behind any kind of legacy.

The Highlanders were raided by the Norse as were the other Nordic Celts in Ireland (Dublin was an Outpost), but both took a nice fight to each-other. Btw the Slavs in the Northern region (my ancestors) intermingled with them more in trade and marriage than fight (except with their cold and hardheaded wifes ). Gingers are the best thing to see in the North - The pale and shining Children of the Sun. Heya, to children of Fraeya !!!

Loved you reaction. To use one's voice effectively is a true skill. Not from a musical background but I've been fascinated by vocals since I developed a fondness for opera, lo, these many years. My exposure to cultures, in my travels, tore down my 'traditionalist' opinions on music, and opened the gates to an appreciation of the huge vista of vocal styles out there. To hear an unfamiliar song or composition, I realised, is to open the door to learning. Once I understood the nature of the music of a 'foreign' people I started to appreciate the history of that culture. Beth, it is such a delight to hear feedback and appraisal from someone skilled in voice and music. I immediately get much of what you describe, from years of reading voice-training guides, (Cecilia Bartoly among them), and applying the principles. I have both Scots and Scandihooligan ancestry, btw, and trad. Celtic/Norse lyric seems to resonate instantly. Like that tuning fork that hums in sympathy. Personally? I'm not all surprised that you show such avid dedication to and interest in the voice. Your colouring and hair is a direct line to the the Norse influence over the Celtic race memory. Both were/are (I'd guess you know) predominantly oral in recording history and recounting of stories. You would fit in without a hitch at the court of Harald Fairhair 700 yrs ago, as court musician.

I love that you do all sorts of different artists, not just pop singers. Sure, Billie Eilish sounds neat and all, but it's awesome to see all these other super talented singers get some time with you, too!

I am lucky enough to have seen Einar/Wardruna a few times, and it is truly mesmerising. Have a look at my videos from his small and intimate performance in Oxford Cathederal earlier this year, a truly wonderful experience. I was very taken by your comments about Einar being entranced as he performs. I think this is actually very valid, he does pretty much channel the Gods as her performs I think.

Wardruna it’s actually something amazing and ingenious thing that happened in Scandinavian folk music. I am delighted with what I hear. Every time I get goosebumps, his music is so good. I discovered some more interesting projects such as Heilung, Dunheim and others. But Wardruna and Einar in my heart forever comes first.

"You can feel it like he's just come out of a trance..." Okay, so I wasn't the only one that felt that way about when he finished this song. Like the applause of the audience snapped him out of some fugue state where his mind was almost in communion with whatever gods or ancestors may have been listening.

If i may give one suggestion. You're gonna love this song by Kaunan. It's called Vallåt. Featuring Einar Selvik and Maria Franz from Heilung.

Whoooaaa, that's Tina Guo on electric cello, there! She's AWESOME. That fanboy moment aside, this whole thing is fantastic. The dynamics, the vocal arrangements, the intensity, it's all there and I'm loving it!

I had a great opportunity to hear Einar live nad it was totally amazing. His voice and the way he uses it awakens something... primordial? :) Also, I recommend checking Heilung.

You have to remember that they talk with a closed mouth as well. They speak with a stiff tongue. If you listen to his other music you can hear him say OK and it’s said completely different from how we would say it. It’s very interesting.

More please! Einar Selvik has such an incredible powerful voice. Also, Wardruna are amazing. Do you think this style of music resonates more with certain people because of their ancestral background? Like how certain habits and DNA can be passed down through generations. Is it possible that certain music is the same way? Any chance for you to revisit Heilung?

Well, you can believe that. She can as well. And everybody else too. But it will particularly tough to prove it. Especially because nobody knows how the old norse skall sung. Otherwise, I understand your infatuation.
