Amanda Nelson (Meredith Baxter) and her best friend, Joan Bixler (Swoosie Kurtz), are happy suburbanites until a lurid affair involving both their families upsets their domestic ease. Dana (Clare Carey), Joan's daughter, begins sleeping with Rob (John Terry), Amanda's husband, and the revelation of this romance dredges up long-buried jealousies and grudges. Joan and Amanda have always turned to each other for emotional support, but this particular problem threatens to destroy their bond.

When I was 15 I developed a little crush on a coworker who was married. I did not tell him or anything, but I told my mom about it. Her reaction was not what I expected at all. I thought she’d just roll her eyes and laugh at me. Instead, she got deadly serious and stated very clearly that there’s not much lower a person can sink in life than to become a home-wrecker. I never needed to be told twice and have always lived by that rule, to never ever - no matter what the situation may be - interfere with someone else’s marriage.

Your mom got her parenting right. I say this not because of her lecturing you against wrecking an innocent person's home and marriage. I say it for the fact that she had built the kind of relationship with you such that you could actually approach her and open up about having a crush on a coworker. I wouldn't take that kind of openness between parents and children for granted.

I was 6 years old when I walked home to find my mom sobbing and loading up the car with stuff. When I asked her what was wrong, she said, "your father decided to see another woman and he doesn't want to be married anymore". When he divorced my mother, he divorced us 3 kids. And I went from being daddy's little princess - the apple of his eye - to seeing him for 15 minutes once a year. Gone. Not even birthday phone calls. My siblings and I then fell prey to traumatic situations that children of single mothers often do. _Horrific abuse._ The decisions that adults make can have profound consequences that affect everyone around them, especially children.

The cheating character of this film was not truly sorry for cheating on his wife, he was however, terrified at the possibility of loosing his upcoming partnership with the office. From that point on he realized the cost to his professional life, not the personal loss of his family. Cheaters are hardly ever sorry, the great majority are narcissist. Her friend took it too lightly and needed to walk away from her for good. Betrayal hurts and changes everything.

Thank goodness you offer some sanity here in the comments. There is an awful trend running through the relationship with her husband that she started to stand up about but got talked out of by her friend. They make anger the enemy. My Ex-Best friend P got married very young and because she became pregnant, she had the habit of always having her very feminine and gorgeous BF at her house (she wasn't feminine, not an excuse to be cheated on, but it helped), and eventually her husband and BF fell in love with each other, they claimed to be the love of each other's lives and couldn't fight the attraction... It happened rght during the time that P had a 2nd child with her husband, which maked it even more horrible. However, they got married and had their own children. My EX BF eventually moved on with her life, and forgave them, it would've been difficult to be at war with them forever, the kids were often at their Dad's new house and his new wife became their step-mom. Contrarily to my ex-husband, hers always paid the child support, took great care of their children, and the step-mom loved them, as well as the woman who stole her husband. Three very fine goodwilled people, except for that dirty betrayal. My friend was telling me about it while driving me to her new address, she said she felt like throwing herself out of the window and I remarked to her that she was going to take a huge risk (on the ground floor apartment 😂), those roses were really very dangerous with all those thorns😱🥺

Amanda and Joan were so real in this film. You can see both their points of view. Their fight in the car park was full of rage, blame and finger pointing. It was so sad to see them throwing insults at each other and when Amanda hit Joan, I expected Joan to hit back but she accepted the attack with grace, telling Amanda's son, basically, that she deserved it. Fine acting from two amazing actresses.

This movie reminds me of my ex…I was married over 12+yrs. I helped my next door neighbor get a job at the same company where I worked. Little did I know she would start sleeping w my husband. Later, she became my boss! She would set my schedule to where she could sleep w him, while her husband was working, and I was away working. Later Her husband called to say he had caught the two of them together! I moved out quickly, it was traumatizing. My divorce attorney said usually when this happens, you can assume the affair has been going on for a few years…The wife is always the last to know. I deserved much better. I learned once they cheat (ex) they’ll always be a cheater. Sadly.

Maybe they realize that human beings are flawed, and understand we all have a sinful nature we struggle with. That not forgiving leads to loneliness and bitterness. In the scene where she was at the divorce lawyers office i think she realized this, because even though her friend got everything in her divorce she sounded bitter. Personally, I don't know what I would do in this kind of circumstance, but I'd hope I would have the strengh and humility to try to forgive and work through it.

One thing I really appreciated about the writing here, was how Baxter's character ended the last scene with the husband as a sort of 'I don't know' kind of decision. I think that was a lot more preferable to many, rather that her totally take her husband back again. It was a far more realistic outcome, based on the time frame, and the newness of the betrayal. She admitted she still loved him, but was honest enough with herself, to also say, 'I don't know if love is enough'. I just thought that was a really good way of ending that scene, with the two characters.

i find it extremely wild that the woman whose daughter was involved with the other's husband wasn't freaking out on the wife for her husband going after a young lady he knew since she was a child.

I went through a divorce over a year ago and realize I never really “dealt” with any of the emotions because I was so worried about my kids and keeping things “as normal” as possible, I dove into work to financially be okay and not lose my home. I lost my dad a year prior and that pain doesn’t come close to this one. Watching this a year later brings up so many feelings. Do you ever feel whole again after someone does this to you?

Although I agree... How accepted it generally is in our Society!!! So many male Celebrities marry gals half their age. And it's been done almost since the beginning of time, families marrying off a daughter to some older well off fellow, regardless of whether or not the daughter liked the guy!!! Not so long ago, most women were considered property, to be bought & sold. We may personally object, but just think about how prevalent it is: Harrison Ford, Chris Harrison, Clint Eastwood, Alex Trebek, Cary Grant, Michael Douglas, Donald Trump, Alec Baldwin, Charlie Chaplin, George Clooney, Eddie Murphy, Warren Beatty, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Bob Saget, David Hasselhoff, Jeff Goldblum, Sean Penn, Dennis Quaid, Richard Gere, Mel Gibson, Mic Jagger, Dick Van Dyke... The list goes "ON & ON!!!" It almost seems a former Star needs to marry someone significantly younger, or at least have a young babe on his arm!!! So, while we may not like it, it's generally accepted by society as a "Status Symbol." With a number of Glamorous Female Actresses following the trend, as they age... Liz Taylor, Cher, & Joan Collins, to name a few. Thank God for the Few Great Celebrities Couples with Similar Aged Partners that manage to stay together till "The End!!!"

I've seen the devastating effects from adultery with a couple of my family members. Adultery cannot be "whitewashed." And I've seen adulterers try doing that. Shabby.

My mother was 13yo when one of her father's friends "seduced" her. I have suspicions about the identity of my "aunt" who was born sometime after. Might explain why 17yo her, and 18yo her, thought having me and my sibling was a good idea.
