Miss Bette Davis and her husband and father to her children Michael and Margo, actor Gary Merrill, made their fourth and final appearance before the cameras together in this rare piece of TV history that was originally conceived as a pilot for a proposed series called Paula. In the semi-autobiography Mother Goddam, written by Whitney Stine with the aid of Miss Davis, Bette dismisses the pilot for Paula as proof that her career had sunk to an unbearable low. But for fans of the palpable onscreen/offscreen chemistry of Miss Davis and Mr. Merrill, who also worked together in Another Mans Poison and Phone Call From A Stranger and would embark on a highly successful touring theatrical production The World of Carl Sandburg, this pilot is a gem. The show that would have been Paula was re-titled The Starmaker before it aired as a onetime special on the anthology series Studio 57 in March of 1958, and in honor of Miss Daviss Centennial, I hope that you will all relive the sparks that flew between The Merrills onscreen and find out how the masterful Bette could elevate seemingly inconsequential material to a relevant and empowering characterization.
VIVA LA BETTE!

It's amazing how Bette Davis totally inhabits her characters while still being Bette Davis. She was a real once-in-a-lifetime actress.

At a time when it was assumed that Bette Davis had accomplished all she could as an actress, she began to travel down other avenues never quite sure where they would lead. Still, she proved that resilience and tenacity can help you overcome just about any obstacle you might have to encounter......on and off the screen.

Delightful piece! First time I've seen it. Surprised and delighted to see the gorgeous Joi Lansing looking her always stunning best. it's a terrible shame she never got a starring role in a major film. She should have been a major star. pity.

Bette's work ethic, tenacity, and honesty of self are the pillars of her stardom. She is a motivating force and a working example of success. A playbook right before my very eyes. Thanks Ms. Davis.

This wasn't a pilot; it is an episode from the anthology series, Studio 57. She *did* do a pilot in 1962 called "The Decorator."

Upload "Another Man's Poison" like, yesterday!? Don't "get" the whole YT copyright thing. Why others can or can't be shown? Seems if YT member owns a video and wants to share with other YT members no prob, no? If I own a video I bought I can share that, it's not illegal. I'm not "reproducing" or "infringing" anything!? 5 years in Federal, 250k fine? FBI? Oh please! How bout all the free music widely avail out here at a finger-click, now where's the FBI? ComeOn, and a 66yo movie? They ought be flattered!

Bruce Merrill : The 1st thing you should know is that I've lost several YT channels over the years -- all obscure classic movies that I like to share -- bc of CR laws. That said, I absolutely think those laws should exist. CR laws exist to protect the financial interests of people who make the art, and if you like watching movies or reading books, then you ought to be glad that their financial interests are being protected -- how else can they keep making art if they can't afford shelter and food? You clearly have no idea of how little money 95% of successful artists make; for ex., the writer John Barth, who was one one of the most acclaimed US fiction writers from about 1970-1995, made the 1990 equivalent of $10K/year from his work (I studied with him -- that's how I know). Imagine if he'd made even less because people were ripping off his work. Imagine if that were *you*, toiling away and getting almost nothing. And, your owning a DVD or a book is NOT the same as owning the work itself -- how can you begin to think that it is? Do you/did you work for a living? If yes, do you think that someone else is entitled to your salary simply because they can describe what you do/did for a living? Yes, it may seem irritating, in the age of internet entitlement, not to find everything you want for free. But what did you do before the internet? You paid to rent a vid or DVD, or you paid for cable TV, or you did without. So please remember that every gripe about "This isn't free!" is, to be blunt, the gripe of an unthinking child rather than the acknowledgement of a responsible adult that people who make art deserve to be paid for it, and if the movies are old and the people who made them are dead, then their descendants deserve to get whatever royalties they can. FFS, Bette Davis couldn't get any work at one point in the 1950s -- she placed an ad in Variety offering her services. You want that to happen to today's artists? I don't.
