The bar was not lower in those days. The bar was actually higher. Unfortunately, today, it’s not about talent….it’s more about who you know. I cannot believe what replaced Regis and Kathy Lee. Years ago. Their replacements definitely had connections in the business….because they have no talent that I can see. I can’t even watch them for a few seconds.

@@laurenurban3942 All actors from Hollywood's golden era would be considered mediocre at best by today's standards. Bette Davis is no exception. Lucille Ball for example, a legend, the greatest comedian of all times. Her last sitcom was cancelled after 6 episodes simply because what was hilarious in the 50's was less than funny in the 80's. I have no idea what Regis has to do with anything, but I cannot give you a better example.

Carson was an outstanding host. Probably the best ever. Outstanding conversationalist. Always knew when to listen and when to talk. Was never at a loss for words. Extremely polite and mannerly

Yes I watched him for years and he always gave the guest the stage, just helped them out with a laugh whenever they needed it. It was such a big deal too if a new comedian gave a skit on his show, that he would wink and give a thumbs up at the end. I think he just did it with everybody no matter how they did, he didn't have the heart not to

I remember seeing this when it originally aired. I was laughing so hard I woke my wife up. she started laughing right along when she realized what she was seeing which Honestly has been a really good source of happiness for me ever since I lost my wife so many years ago i was married for 42years I was 24 and she was 20. She got cancer in 2020 I was totally lost without her. She took a major hit the treatment was horrible for her. I could do nothing to change any thing so I felt helpless I miss her everyday. Mothers are the glue that holds everyone together.. it broke me to pieces so seeing comments like this makes me smile.

Classy, graceful women don’t shamelessly drag former colleagues through the mud on national television, regardless of whether what she said was true. Class is more than dressing sharply, having good posture and speaking with an antiquated transatlantic accent. People too easily mistake class for haughtiness and arrogance.

My mum adored Bette and I grew up watching her films, firstly on TV, then on video, then on DVD. I love her so much! She's frail but elegant with her hat and her gloves and she stands respectfully to thank the audience. She has charisma off the scale and those "Bette Davis eyes" 😊 I'm proud to share her star sign, Aries, and she will be my role model as I age.

Betty was beautiful when she was a starlet, always so talented. She had her health problems in her senior years, stoke and so forth, but she never gave up and kept on acting. Lucky us to have such a wonderful bounty of movies as her legacy.

Viva Bette! The definition of a star. You can’t fake the audience’s reaction. In every film she made, she mesmerized the second she appears on camera. Innate gift, yes, but hard work is what ensures the gift continues to give. Watching her films now, no matter how melodramatic the style, she seems just as present with us as when they were made. Life is so enriched by her work.

@@Les445 Very sad that after she filmed " Whatever Happened to Baby Jane", she seemed to be pigeonwholed, along with Joan Crawford, into the whole horror movie universe. I DID enjoy her performance in "Burnt Offerings" and especially in the late 70's TV miniseries "The Dark Secret of Harvest Home". To me, however, she will ALWAYS represent what was once THE BEST of The Golden Age of Hollywood.

One year after this show, Bette collapsed at the American Cinema Awards in January 1989 where she was being honoured and it was discovered her breast cancer, first diagnosed in 1983 had returned; she recovered sufficiently to travel to the San Sebastián International Film Festival in September, but she again became very unwell and died in France the following month. Bette smoked 100 Vantage cigarettes each day up to her death. Bette weighed 90 lbs in 1988, but after her cancer returned, her weight dropped to only 75 lbs or 35 kgs. One funny story Bette told from her time making movies for Warners was that Errol Flynn‘s trailer would rock visibly back and forth as he entertained young starlets between setups. Another funny story was about George Brent, who had been her lover in real life and leading man in so many films, had his own plane and enjoyed flying. When Jack Warner suspended him and barred him from the lot, Brent simply piloted his private aircraft low over the studio soundstage in Burbank, circling endlessly. No one could shoot sound while Brent continued his harassment and he was quickly rehired at full salary.

Thank you for posting this wonderful reminder of when times were REAL and (relatively speaking) uncomplicated. When my siblings and I were little, we’d watch movies on rainy Saturday afternoons. One that we’d stop everything for was The Nanny with Betty Davis…such an amazing performance and great, scary movie! When we were lucky enough to stay up late, we’d watch The Tonight Show with our parents laughing at the jokes and the brilliance of Johnny Carson. I still remember his last show…watching with my parents and finally understanding the sarcasm and humor that kept my parents entertained for so many years!😊

What a hoot! To be so forthright is like watching freedom sing! No one now can do what she did. A great dame indeed (although the black face was pretty surprising!) If it's any consolation, there's no one like these two left.

In the 5th grade we moved to Lowell Ma, the first thing I learned was Bette Davis was from Lowell. Obviously didn’t appreciate it then, but years later watching her movies- Star ⭐️ barley touches it!!! Love Baby Jane & Johnny Carson! 🙏🏻

Betty's comment about age 70 hit a responsive note with me. Suddenly I'd turned a sharp corner into OLD AGE. Realized people through their 60's always seemed to function fairly well. However throughout my life one's 70's seemed to be the reversal of independence, the beginning of scary fragility and dependency. It has proven to be true.

I love the acting that she did that made her an instant star. She looked into the camera and said to Leslie...." And when you kissed me, I had to wipe my mouth, wipe my mouth" and then she proceeded to wipe her mouth. Class act!!!!

When I was younger and I first saw her in that film it took me years before I could watch another Bette Davis role. This was the first time I had seen Bette Davis act and I had such a visceral reaction to her I could not bare to watch her again. Her acting is THAT powerful. Of Human Bondage was ahead of its time, but I guess that has been said by greater than myself.

She wasn't an instant star. During her first few years she was cast in unremarkable and insignificant films. And at the premiere of her first film, "Bad Sister" (1931) she left before it finished and cried all the way home, certain her career was over. It wasn't until 1935's "Dangerous" that she hit critical success.
