I was a little girl in the 60s & even then we --women & girls----were expected to wear dresses. Schools had dress codes & pants were not allowed for girls until I was in the 5th grade (around 1970) My grandparents had a ranch that I spent every Summer & most school vacations at since my mom worked & daycare wasn't readily available back then & I had to buy my ranch clothes in the boys dept. Just jeans & button up western type shirts & sturdy boots. I remember the shirts buttoned up diffferently. Casual has not always been a thing, especially for women/girls & women wearing pants/trousers/jeans in everyday life is a relatively new thing. Work clothes ( overalls, jeans, denim/flannel shirts, work boots, etc) were not sold in the womens dept of the store. Average folks had work clothes & church clothes & kids had school clothes & play clothes. Life was much more compartmentalized than it is now in the digital age.

Very interesting! Yes life was compartmentalised that's the best way to put it. Also before 60s there wasn't much of casual dressing. There's a photo of my great grandfather in what it looks like a barbecue (we call it asado here) and some men are wearing pyjamas pants bc what else could they use?

Gosh, now that pants are expected I’ve gone rogue and hardly ever wear them… But I imagine if I was born in your time I may have felt limited by that and could very well have sought out pants just to change things up! But growing up with pants I’ve had to go many years without wearing them to get rid of that line across my belly from tight jeans! 😩😮‍💨 As well as get underwear that isn’t too tight and preferably high waisted! 🥲 Makes the fact that she wore pants in the 40’s even more interesting! 🥰

Bette Davis had a delicate physique, juxtaposed with a unique and strong character. I guess it follows suit that her style would be quirky and arty, with a foundation of chic vogue. Your observations were brilliant in this video. My sense of style has now been further illuminated. 😉 Thank you, Ally!

I always loved straight lines, à la dramatic, but those didn't suited me very well. When I was able to type myself correctly in the Kibbe system (SG) I realized I can wear straight lines if they're short. So, I can't be manly, but definitely boyish! Also enjoying all the quirky stuff I can throw on myself and still looking good!

The reason the pants were so big and loose was because that was what the men were wearing then, look at Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, ordinary workers, etc. Loose pants with belts fit people for longer, and were made of better quality fabrics which lasted longer - unlike today's fast fashion. Of course, these stars could afford nicely tailored clothes, and everyone else were savvy enough to be able to alter ready-made clothes to suit themselves or make their own from scratch. Not so much these days. Fast fashion is like fast food - it's junk (literally; mostly compounds found in plastic, pvc, etc). Fast fashion is made of cheap fabrics, made by poor people in slave conditions (mostly in Eastern countries), made in standard sizes that fit only standard people, to be sold cheaply, meant to last for a season only; so you HAVE to buy more constantly to be "in style" - in other words, planned obsolescence to keep capitalism ticking over. Fast fashion uses very small overlocked/serged seam allowances, so they cannot be let out or altered much without it looking obvious. This why fast fashion rarely fits most people well. Because people these days are mostly not savvy with sewing, they are not aware of how a garment should sit or drape on the body, where the seam lines should lie, the real purpose of slightly shorter long sleeves, why waist height makes such a big difference on different body shapes, etc. The ordinary working class person wears fast fashion because that is all they can afford, yet they are unaware that it should/could fit them better were it not for capitalism.
@unapologeticanti-feminist3205
@unapologeticanti-feminist3205 2 жыл бұрын
People compete with each other over the things they can afford, being able to get new, and expensive, clothes is something people like to show off, particularly women since they are the main people who care about what is in season. This is a consequence of human nature and is irrespective of capitalist or communist societies (since even in a communist society, people still horde wealth which is why they inevitably collapse).
@marydidyouknow5826
@marydidyouknow5826 2 жыл бұрын
@@unapologeticanti-feminist3205 Well said. Many people hate capitalism but are not willing to give up the benefits of a capitalistic society. Certainly there are those who abuse the system, but capitalism is simply about having a product and selling it to those who need it so that you, in turn, can buy things you need to provide for your family. People think about how rich some of these CEO's are but don't realize that there fortune is also tied up in their business. They have to pay employees, insurance, mortgages/rent/maintenance, etc., and they can lose it in an instant.

i think wedding suits were pretty common for a lot of women who married in the 1940s (particularly for those on their 2nd or 3rd marriage).. . my great-grandparents were married at city hall in the 40s and my great-grandmother just wore a cream suit with matching platform shoes/hat/gloves/clutch.. . it wasn't really meant to be a humorous joke, it was a time of war and austerity, so elaborate weddings with big bouquets, long dresses, veils, trains just would have felt out of step with the times for a lot of young couples (even those that could afford it)..

Thank you, Aly, for another excellent and well-researched video. I have been trying to determine whether I am a TR or a soft gamine, and thanks to this video, and the one about "don'ts for body types", I have decided that I am an SG. I was really struggling with incorporating the guidelines for romantics and theatrical romantics into my sense of style, but the soft-gamine sense of youth and playfulness fits my personality much better. In addition, I do feel that my body has a bit more angularity than either of the romantics, and I'm pretty short, at 5'4". I'm looking forward to checking out the links you have included.

I am about 98% certain I am a soft gamine! I just have very long arms. I'm only 5'4" and very dainty all over with a more teenage frame, but long extremities.

I still think you are a soft natural. When your hair is longer, looser and sort of messy it just fits your facial bone structure. Thats my guess of your body type! 💞🙏🏿😘

Hi Aly!! I love your videos and have learn so much from them!! Thank you!! However I am really confused because I feel that even though I have a soft gamine face I have a romantic body type. Because I'm buxom and don't have the body of a teenager. I look very boxy if I wear boyish clothes. I only look good in clothes which have a waist emphasis. Otherwise I look fat. I'm 5'1. My stats are the same as Marilyn Monroe except a 28" waist. Same size 8. I have big eyes and a pointy chin. So I'm really confused. Do mixed types exist? If so how can one dress a mixed type.

Hello. I'm obviously not Aly so I hope you don't mind my chipping in but I've recently come across something called Truth is beauty that suggests that faces can have their own separate essence mixes and that one has to consider the face and body and accommodate the different elements that come from both. A good example is the model Lily Cole.

Hey Aly, I've been always into natural style, except I am a dramatic classic. How do I incorporate the element of their essence within my fashion without destroying the balance of my physique?

Same here. It's what has made me unsure of whether I'm a soft dramatic or a flamboyant natural. Would we not be more drawn to our own lines?
@bbappzz98

@@julieme7927 not particularly, I’m TR and really enjoyed androgynous outfits until I discovered Kibbe and realised although I liked those outfits, they didn’t fit me as much as it did naturals/dramatics who I admired. Trying to incorporate quirkiness into my romantic lines is what I am striving for even if I might lean more into gamine sometimes.

@@bbappzz98 I see what you mean but in my case I really don't know which of those two I am so I hoped that my leaning towards natural lines was an indication of what my kibble type might be 🙈

Having just had the revelation that I might be a taller soft gamine rather than a shorter soft dramatic; I feel like in youth, a lot of soft dramatics start out as soft gamines and mature into soft dramatic. Just an sitting interesting I noticed. A lot of parallels in these two types
