To name a few more--Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin were also excellent TV talkmasters, also far superior to Letterman. Letterman, like Jimmy Fallon and Conehead O'Brien before him, got where he is by his appeal to a narrow (but prized, by advertisers) demographic of ignorant, silly young males who think they are "cool" for liking a talk host that is supposedly brilliant/cutting edge, when in reality he has nothing much to say and fills the gap between fawning guest patter with juvenile stunts
