The Skin Tone Gradients Video: • AMAZING Skin Tones usi...
Have you ever wondered why ACR and Lightroom are so good with skin tone selections, but the native tools in Photoshop are antiquated? I have. It baffles me that masking is so easy to do in a program that just recently received masking. Yet Photoshop, which has had masking since 1994, has horrible options for selecting skin tones easily.
In this video I will show you 4 methods for selecting skin tones. Two of them are poor, but we have to talk about them and two of them will make incredible skin tone selections. One of them actually uses ACR as a filter to create the mask in Photoshop. Yes, the impossible IS possible!
Chapters:

Thanks for the tutorial! There's another way to use the Camera Raw (ACR) Filter to create selections. First, open your photo and go to Filter > Camera Raw Filter. In the Curve section, select Edit Point Curve (the white circle). Drag the far-right point to zero. Then, click on the Masking tab and create a skin mask from the 'People' section. Define facial, body, and lips (any) masks. Inside the newly created mask, go to Curves, select the white circle, and drag the far-left point to 255. Now, you have a black and white skin mask. Use this as a luminance mask to apply to your original layer. You can even create presets and actions for a faster workflow. Hope this helps!

Excellent video explained in an excellent way (and to say that I understand little English). Maybe one day Adobe will add automatic masks like those in Camera Raw directly into Photoshop. I use this method, let me know what you think: * I create the mask in Camera Raw, * I put that layer in difference mode, * I create a new merged layer by merging the original and this one in difference, * I hide the layer with the Camera Raw mask, * I desaturate the merged layer and adjust it with a curve so as to lighten it a little (or darken it, it depends), and I add a slight gradient to avoid creating artefacts. At this point I already have a good mask that I can apply to any adjustment layer. Greetings from Sardinia
@jmgcg
@jmgcg 9 ай бұрын
Bravo,really, when masks on ACR/Lr appeared i was, hummmm maybe soon Adobe will put some feature that allows to transfer them to Photoshop. Which make all sense,since the color range skin select is,well useless. Frankly I never thought about "export" with a color for skin or whatever. I was increasing contrast to try what you accomplish here. Fantastic, thank you a LOT. Ps, and the plus with your technique,it can be recorded as an action
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 9 ай бұрын
Thanks 😁 but unfortunately it can't be recorded as an action 😞 it will make a magenta spot that is the same as the image you recorded it from. It's annoying.

Great tutorial. Could you please explain how the ACR masking hack is different from just converting the layer to a Smart Object and using the curves within ACR to make the adjustments to the selected Skin, knowing you can go right back and make changes within your workflow since its a Smart Object? If there is no difference in the outcome using a Smart Object before using ACR seems like a quicker approach.
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 9 ай бұрын
I try to avoid Smart Objects and Layer Stamps in my workflow as much as possibly. With my workflow and Blend If, if something changes below that stamp then you wont see it and its utterly annoying. So everything I do is with Blend If and Adjustment layers unless I absolutely have to add a pixel layer. This keeps the whole workflow dynamic so that if things change under those layers, the top layers change according to the tonal variations under them. It's a personal preference, but I've built it for accuracy, efficiency, and versatility.
@mikebrownhill4662
@mikebrownhill4662 9 ай бұрын
Interesting technique - thanks. Could the Object Selection mask ("hammer approach") also be improved by using Apply Image to put the CR-Skin Tone mask onto it using Darken mode? This might add a bit of subtlety to the skin tones in the OBJ SEL mask, but because Apply Image is being done in Darken mode, it wouldn't bring all the rest of the CR-Skin Tone mask with it. Of course, you'd now have to create the Skin Tone mask as well - so it's probably not worth it and Blend If will be a quicker way to get a similar job done. Just a thought - I often use Apply Image and blend modes to improve my masks... !
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 9 ай бұрын
That very well could work as well, but using Apply Image would call for another pixel layer in the mix, right? If that's the case, I'd prefer a selection with the tonal feathering from Blend If so that selection could be used for multiple things. But that's a great thought!

I know they are just test images, but there is a TON of time and energy that goes into creating the perfect test image for the given tutorial. In many cases I value my test images as much as I do courses because of how they lead me to my findings.
