Gorgeous engine, the BR Blue is marvelous. I have the Dominion of Canada from this range, and thought it surprisingly good, in spite of the price. I can strongly recommend these to any that can afford it.

Nice model Matt. At over $630Au each for a DC engine, I can fully understand how you could only justify buying 1 of the 6 locos. As you say, changing the red and white box and still calling it Hornby Dublo was a mistake in packaging I'd say. If the motor is not the vertical Ringfield type I'd even go as far as to say that they shouldn't be selling these as Hornby Dublo. I can't see the new service sheet so can't say if the motor is the old type though. I must admit that I'm not very impressed with the current version of the Hornby company. The focus on £££ is a big let down for most of us long term Hornby Dublo and Tri-ang collectors. Nice review Matt. She does run well. Stay Safe and Happy Modelling. Mon

Good thoughtful review. I too missed out on the 2013 and 2014 versions but took the plunge and pre-ordered all six (two yet to arrive). Lovely models but pity they didn't upgrade to Turbomotive standards (21 pin/firebox flicker, etc). Even the latest plastic A4 releases have 21 pin now. One thing's for certain - I won't be plunging again and ordering the Great Goodbye, if your prediction is right!

This tooling still baffles me quite a bit. Upon watching this review, I’d noticed Hornby changed the tooling around the front windows from the normal plastic range, presumably an area which would have suffered being cast in diecast metal as opposed to injection plastic. The valve gear is still leaving much to be desired as well. Did I just purchase one online? Maybe. But I still wish these issues would have been rectified. Side note… has anyone else pointed out the provision of the prewar style speedo mechanism on the fireman’s side on the valance-removed examples? Rather peculiar! I’d have thought this to be a separately applied part not to be included with the BR liveried locos. This speedo mechanism was only present when the prototypes had their valances removed during the war and the period just before they were put into BR early crest livery. A rather interesting tooling choice on Hornby’s end.

Hi Matt excellent review. A very collectible model. I am guessing the model is representative of how the machine looks now, because when it was originally painted the dark blue in 1950 it had a single chimney . It was painted green in 1952 and then The double chimney was fitted sometime in 1957/58.

Hi there, the plastic tender as far as I know came in when Dublo started doing two rail. My 3-rail Silver King has a tinplate tender with a diecast chassis and a single chimney.

So I've got one and love it. My two gripes are that it has both speedo's fitted and the BR one seen @21:55 is eccentric where @7:00 (lovely footage btw) it isn't and is centred. I do worry over time if the cable may break.

As an observer in the hobby this is one I'm really disappointed I missed out on, it would've perfectly scratched that itch I've had since I last got a model (Hornby's Old Smokey....quite old, I think I was 4 or 5). The resale price of these is ridiculous so chances are it'll stay a missed opportunity.

Hornby Dublo came with a tin plate tender, however Wrenn did not buy the tooling for the tin plate tenders and instead bought in Triang plastic tender. Why Hornby don't do the job properly and make a diecast tender seems wrong to me.

Its a beautiful loco. But I can Honestly say. All my original Dublo engines have metal tenders. Including A4s, Duchess's, Castles and 8f's. Perhaps some of the later ones from the 60s have plastic ones. But I dont have any of those. I think for 600 dollars Australian. Id like a metal tender. As you can see the colour difference between the painted metal and painted plastic.

I am tempted, but £300 is a lot for a ready loco. For less you can buy a Accurascale Class 37 sound and stay alive. That said Sir Nigel looks great. That said, the height above the front pony wheels doesn't look right. I wonder if any packaging hasn't been removed.

My latest release hush hush has the same horrible flash lines on the tender. In the grey its so noticable as well. Great review as ever 👍

Hornby is its own worst enemy when it comes to quality control. I have an NRM exclusive Flying Scotsman in her 1924 British Empire Exhibition condition. She is just the regular Hornby A1, so no die-cast boiler, but unlike the Centerary Dublo Diccast version she has a 21-pin socket. At any rate, there is damage to the lining where the black line on one of the bands has rubbed off. The wrap that the loco came in was damaged at that spot and had some of the lining smeared onto it. Like it had not fully cured before the loco was shoved in the box. I did not see a point in sending her back, as besides some visible glue and some slight damage to the paint on one of the drivers, she is fine. Also, I had already sent for a replacement for one of these, and she had damaged the lining on the same band, so who is to say if I did send this one back, the third would not have the same issue. The white part is intact, so I suppose I could correct it. But what a poor show from Hornby. Such a great loco spoiled by so few problems.

Traditional means made with old tooling. Same as averts on eBay which say ‘vintage’ which means old and worn out 😂😂😂

I have to say the box design is inferior to the (modern) Dublo box, as you say, but also not as attractive to the usual Hornby box. I'd like to see a Dublo version of 'Sir Nigel' in it's recent wartime black too.

Beautiful locomotive. I’m with you with regard to the boiler lining. That looks awful. No excuse for that. We know that you can cheaper Hornby engines with far better lining, even on the streamlined A4’s.
