Very glad that you didn't shortened the Bataille related stuff. I actually think that you really flourish in these longer form reviews. More nuance and depth, dig it a lot. It's great to see someone so passionate about something I'm fascinated with for so long as well. I crave for a german translation of the biography. In my knowledge there's only the french original and the english one you are reviewing. Maybe I'll pick up the english one even though I won't grasp a lot that way. Better than nothing, I suppose.

There is a French black metal band that is highly influenced by Bataille's work (Inner Experience, The Solar Anus, and Theory of Religion) on one record of theirs, released in 2007 (Fas - Ite Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum). They are called Deathspell Omega, try to check that record out!

I have to say that the longer videos are more enjoyable than the shorter ones. Perhaps there can be two versions, one a sort of edited highlights for those who prefer to focus on the main points and the full deal for those who like to sit with a subject for a while. Whatever, always look forward to your reflections. You probably don't need any recommendations but I read The Eye of Purgatory by Jacques Spitz earlier in the year, someone I wasn't familiar with but now really hope that more of his works are translated from the original french. Really great novella, full of cosmic dread and decay :D

yeah, as far as I know, The Accursed Share is available on amazon. In two volumes, I think. Odd that you mention Sartre as not being very fun-loving; just finished a book for a class on Existentialism called 'At the Existentialist Cafe' that pretty much painted him and de Beauvoir (as well as Camus for the time they were friends) as being a bit on the wild side. It was a pretty good book, focusing a lot on phenomenology. A bit dry at times, but a nice ride nonetheless.

At 34:20, Mr. Sargent mentions some authors: Breton, Hegel, ..., Nietzsche and Dostojevskij. However, I simply cannot hear the name he says between “Hegel” and “Nietzsche”. The auto-generated subtitles says “for her Albin” which is obviously nonsense. Can anyone tell me who he is talking about?

Deathspell Omega's song Diabolus Absconditus has all of its lyrics taken from Bataille's Madame Edwarda. Great track from a great band, who of which take and expand upon many of the truths Bataille expressed-plus much more-throughout their discography.

Maybe you know already but there's a book about Acephale which I haven't read too much of yet as I want to finish "Visions of Excess" first and then read the biography along with "Georges Bataille: A Critical Introduction" by Benjamin Noys. I did however, read the introduction and it describes how the author went to great lengths to acquire a lot of internal documents and other information from its former members. I think it also has texts from the journal and lectures from the College of Sociology. Oh and there's also Encyclopaedia Acephalica: Comprising the Critical Dictionary & Related Texts, which I think is out of print but of which I can send you the pdf if you'd like.

Whenever I read Story Of The Eye I can't help but see a younger Fairuza Balk playing the character of Simone. However I'm sure it would hurt the integrity of the film having an American actress play Simone. But if Fairuza spoke French and she was maybe 10-20 years younger I'd say she would be the perfect Simone at least according to my vision.

I read Story of the Eye today - wow. I don't think I've ever read something so perverted or compelling in my entire life. While I can't yet say that I have been shaken to the core by it as you were, it certainly inspires a spectacular interest in Bataille's work. It's a shame that so many will write it off as classless pornography written by a drunken French aristocrat, because what was clear to me after daring to read past the first chapter was that Bataille was on to something extraordinarily profound. I will be reading this biography, rest assured.

That story about Bataille's obsession with the 'ecstasy' displayed by the man being tortured and executed by 1,000 cuts reminds me of the philosophy of meaning through sadism displayed by the character of Jonathan Randall in the tv series Outlander - it's not a 'great' series, but it does have some very interesting themes at play within the context of a historic, romantic war drama, in particular the scene where Randall rapes the lead male character and basically tries to ruin him sexually by forcing him to think of his beloved wife during the rape. There is also an interesting scene where he continues torturing this same man because that 'ecstasy' that Bataille was fascinated by also appears to Randall in the moment. I always find it interesting where high art and average art intersect: even though Outlander is a guilty pleasure kind of show, if you like Bataille I think you might find a lot of the themes that surround the character's motivations to be quite interesting. It isn't True Detective, but I'd still say it's a good option for easy viewing without being without substance.

Do you think the shocking aspect of Bataille´s thought may itself be transgressed by the appropriate form of analyzing it? It seems like a point that insists on not being looked from beyond the location of disruption, and shock.

Dunno if it’s translated in English but Michel Surya published a few years ago a new book about Bataille (Sainteté de Bataille, which you can translate « Holiness Of Bataille » www.lyber-eclat.net/livres/saintete-de-bataille/). It’s kind of a 'second thoughts' addition to his (impressive) biography, specially focused on Acephale and the dogmaless religion Bataille intented to set up in the 1930’s.

So Bataille stands between laughter and horror before the mortality of the human which for him is best represented by the aware vulnerability of his liquescent eyeball which he proceeds to pluck out and crush into goop and he says that there is nothing to say, all the while having a firm grip on his swollen dick with one hand while the other hand is shoved into his bleeding anus at the moment that he shoots his seed into the fathomless void and cries out meaningless syllables that contain the mystery of everything... then death swallows him into the nothing and he is never seen or heard from again but we remember him with awe-filled reverence...

Well, isn't that a surprise. Maybe you will try again some day. I used to love Bataille (when I was considerably younger, in the heyday of youth) and other surrealists. Bataille belongs to one of those authors that is usually pivotal for young men, first experiencing life. It is easy to latch on to. As a uni professor I hear constantly young 20 somethings raving about this guy. But, I find personally my literary tastes have evolved from those days. I find depth is more important characteristic, nowadays at least. But good on you fella, it's great that one feels passionately about something. It really is.

Arturo Senni I agree. Story of the Eye certainly is a juvenile story but I mean that in a positive sense, Bataille writes for the teenager. I am that twenty something, it's true. What do you mean by depth?

Watching the way you react on these two videos, I still can't figure out what you like so much about Bataille. But he's published in la Pléiade, so he must be important... (so they say). From my point of view: Yes, pornography should be banned, less so because it destroys eroticism and more so because sexual liberation is a form a political control.
