Donald Zeiter Perhaps Ethel Merman, on a good day. It was Beverly Sills who said, a good definition of a bel canto(in her case, opera)singer, is "can belto". Another bon mot: On Kate Smith, who I think would compare favorably on "belto-ing" in many of her songs. Find her on YT singing, introducing, really, God Bless America, to the Nation, in 1939; have a hankie handy. Anyway, Irving Berlin, as related by his daughter- and he wrote God Bless America- said of Kate's voice etc., "Big girl, big voice."

This is really a broadcast on film, not lip synching. Note how she sings to the microphone with full facial and body expressions. That's what singers did. Note, too, that everyone is dressed up. I was part of that radio era as a kid and that's exactly how it looked. The world was totally different. Everyone, but everyone, was lively, congenial, friendly and down to earth. Patty Andrews said it was "like the whole world was in love."

The stories my father told me when he was in the war. He saw all kinds of stars, but his favorite was Betty Hutton. As a child I'd watch her on the late late show, and now, thanks to video and DVD I can enjoy her over and over. It's like having my dad sit next to me late at night with the volume turned down so not to wake up my mom and listen to him tell stories about his favorite entertainer. For a moment he's back with me too.

Lake, Gaynor and Miller all lived long, full lives. Miller toured with Sugar Babies well into her 60s and I think she was in her 70s when she did Follies. Poor Rita Hayworth had Alzheimer's late in life. Hutton eventually overcame alcoholism and was proud to graduate college later in life. Then, there was poor Lilian Gish who did her last film (The Whales of August) at age 100 and never did a movie again.

Life was hard back in those days, but when you had actors & singers like this to listen to & watch, it made you escape the horrors of war & the boys coming home all beat up, ripped apart & depressed. Back then, though, families were much tighter & they all ate meals together, listened to the radio as they used their own imaginations, then maybe make homemade ice cream as everyone sat around & sang Christian songs, songs we'd learn from those who went through slavery that touched the heart, & just fun, silly songs. Nowadays, it's argue, fight, march, picket, fight, gossip, malign, fight some more, w/ few people appreciating what they have, or even taking time to actually enjoy their own company. Electronic devices are grand for a lot of things, but kids today aren't learning how to debate & maintain their manners, & they don't even know the Golden Rule, or "sticks & stones may break my bones, but words can never harm me." I'm so glad I have great memories of growing up, even if we were poor & barely had a pot to piss in. We had the Bible, the US Constitution, & hop scotch, tag, backyard baseball, hide 'n go seek, & building forts & tree houses!

(A song about the slang and hip talk of jive fans -- or whatever they called them at the time.) Trivia: in Bob Hope's movie, "My Favorite Brunette," he makes a record platter recording of the villains talking. Then when he goes to play it for the cops, it's been switched, and "Murder, He Says" comes out instead.

Literacy KC Volunteer Gerald and Betty Ford's favorite song; Mrs.Ford actually was from Kalamazoo, and the two were married at the height of the Big Band Swing era, October, 1948. She later used her dancing talents to great effect, once dancing on the Cabinet Room table in the WH, to husband Jerry's delight. How ridiculously low we sunk to have a preteen crybaby tweeting furiously at all hours, presumably from a golden T. bowl. Ah the wonderful life filled 40s!

XX,I'll fill you in on the three women you mentioned in your comment. Betty Hutton, one of my favorites. Big in the 40s and early 50s,had personal problems, got hooked on uppers and downers, was hospitalized in the 60s,went to work in a Rhode Island rectory, cleaned up,became good friends with a priest, made tv appearances in the 80s,in the 2000s wrote a book, check out her interview with Robert Osborne in 2000 and passed away in 2007 from colon cancer I believe, she was 86. Veronica Lake started in the 40s and by the end of that decade pretty much faded away. She was a heavy drinker and died from hepatitis in 1973. Beautiful Rita Hayworth, big during the 40s,worked till the early 70s. She had trouble remembering her lines, she was seen in public acting off and it was the early signs of alzheimers. She passed in '77 I believe.

@yuch1102 The guy she's with keeps ruining the moments they have with his way of speaking; he compliments her in a very unromantic way using slang each time. This is slang from back them: 'Murder' in this case would be the same as when people would say 'You're killing me" meaning "You're so beautiful, you're looks are killing me". When she says "Will bring to nobody's murder but his own" means if he keeps it up she's gonna 'pull the plug' or end their relationship.

It's our loss that she didn't make more movies, but her emotional breakdowns were bound to happen sooner or later. If you read her autobiography, you will wonder how she made it as long as she did ... what a story she had! She's the best in my opinion.

There's a couple of people in the comments making that typical "born in the wrong era" comments - but I think it was Hutton who was the one born in the wrong era. She was waaaaaaay ahead of her time, and honestly I think most of filmmakers pf her day couldn't figure out what to do with all of her talent she had spilling out of her. "An explosive, funny, high-energy girl? I know, let's put her in a dress and have her pine for a bland leading man!" She's one of my favorite actresses of all time, bar-none and I hate every movie she's in. They wanted the reserved power of Judy Garland when Hutton was basically a stick of dynamite. If she was around today, I think she'd probably be one of the top comic actresses in the world. She's closer to Kate McKinnon than Betty Grable

Maybe she liked wearing dresses and pining for men. She wasn't gender-dysphoric like you. A woman who could be soft and feminine, liked men, AND happened to be a dynamic entertainer. Shocking concept for feminazis, huh?

Today 02/26/21 would be Bettys 98th birthday! Betty I hope you're still knocking them dead(no pun intended) in heaven. She was by far the better choice to play Annie oakley,Judy and Ethel were not right for the screen version. Judy seemed out of it on the outtakes I've seen and I think Ethel was more suited for the stage. Happy Birthday Betty!

Cass Daley and Betty Hutton prove you need REAL TALENT to thrive. Music today is trash. Girls need too much auto tune and rely on sexual dance moves Betty Hutton has this energy that could never be replicated now.

BrickPa Google the Riotously funny My Favorite Brunette(1947 film) with Bob Hope and Dorothy L'Amour, and you will get a treat- as this song gets a very funny use near the end of the film; which I believe was itself lifted from the 1938 VitaPhone movie short of Betty doing this song with band backup. Enjoy.
