The opening theme song from PBS's multiple-Emmy-Award-winning learn-to-read series, "Between the Lions." Cindy Mizelle sings lead on the BTL Theme, which was written by Paul Jacobs and Sarah Durkee. The video for the title sequence, created by Balsmeyer & Everett, Inc., won an Emmy in 2001.

It's also a play on the fact that many of the larger public libraries in big cities had stone lion statues in front of the main entrance. Thus, all stories could be found 'between the lions'. :)

This show actually has a VERY clever name. And for two reasons. 1. Sometimes, a library's entrance stairs has two statues of lions, so when you walk to the library, you are Between the Lions! 2. The phrase "Read between the lines"

My favorite show as a kid, back when alot of people still had public cable and all you had every morning was pbs kids. When you came home from school they'd have Fox kids on so you could forget about school lol. Then the weekend would arrive and on Saturday morning you'd be stuck on the tv for 3 hours straight.

Between the Lions was something special. It literally taught me how to read, even though I never really liked reading books. Sesame Street was another show similar to this one, but I didn't feel the same charm with it as I felt with this show. And that theme song, man, I will literally never get it out of my head. It is such a bop. Between the Lions got cancelled in 2009 and I haven't felt the same since. Darn you, PBS!

To me, Between the Lions was Sesame Street for a slightly older, more literate audience of kids who finally know their ABC’s, yet are still learning what to do with it all. I don’t really read fiction for pleasure as much as I should either, but I’d be lying if I said this show wasn’t what taught me how to read - it could very well be my foundation for understanding your comment. A lot of the humor still holds up as an adult. It’s a shame that the current generation of toddlers won’t get to watch it on PBS.

@@wyitzyk I side with this, the greatest series PBS ever greenlit for the small screen. Never have I ever had so much entertainment value/memories with a show quite like this. And it still holds up to this day as an adult. Like I said, it's the best show PBS ever did for their kids block and nothing has topped it since then.

I bursted into tears watching this 😭 my little 5year old brother also cried with me. I’m so emotional right now I still remember anxiously waiting until the end of school so I can rush home to watch Between the lions. I’m an adult now and I truly felt like my years just flashed before my eyes.Even writing this comment I’m crying.These cartoons were like my friends,I felt like I could always count on them and we can interact with each other and learn new things everyday.I really miss this time frame in my life even if I could go back to being that ecstatic little girl for one day I’ll be so happy .I know it’s a lot late but Thank you my childhood shows and cartoons I loved you a lot and I wouldn’t forget you. 😭 🤗 ❤️

@@Lovekween11 it has to do the way the government runs my sister teaches and because of the cornovirus it's something teachers wish they could do teach 1 on 1 with the students because each child is diffren't and the learn at different speeds. so basically it's setup as everyone learns same thing at same speed so if your slower, you fall behind. my sister teaches 2nd or 3rd grade and teachers will pass students even if there not actually ready but for lets say special education they don't want a student to fail 4 times r it's like a 11 year old with a bunch of 8 year olds as well.

Jewel Moore I used to watch this show the instant I came home from school. It taught me how to read, which makes you smart. As far as I know, it used to air at 3:30 weekday afternoons. Not only did I watch it at home, I used to watch it when Claude's cousin's grandmother babysat me while my mom was at work.
