November 2004
After fourteen years of anarchy, the international community is helping to stabilise Liberia. But how does a country move on after so many years of war?
"The economy is totally destroyed ... Monrovia is still a city of a million people without water or electricity," explains UN special representative Jacques Klein. But the most difficult task the country faces is rehabilitating its traumatised child soldiers. "These children have so much sorrow, so much hurt inside," states children's worker Josephine Tengbeh. "We have to detraumatise them, we have to counsel them, we have to make them feel at home." But in a country where half the population live in displacement camps and many people have lost contact with their families, it's a huge challenge. However, the UN sponsored disarmament process is achieving results. Now the priority is to sustain the peace and rebuild the country so that Liberians can finally have a future to look forward to.

The only reason they handed in the weapons was that the UNMIL gave them $150 for every item handed in. They were buying weapons in Ivory Coast and Guinea to claim the $150 they even manufactured weapons from old train and machinery parts. The major problem now is corruption in the government.Millions of $ of AID food was sold in the markets. Liberia needs a strong honest leader who can promote massive farming opportunities. What they did to that amazing country is so so terrible.

LOL. So False. Taylor went to the president of Cote I'voire Houphet Boigny, and he agreed to help Taylor because Tolbert Jr. who was murdered along with his father President Tolbert was married Mr. Boigny's daughter, and Mr. Boigny had a personal vendetta with Mr. Doe, so Mr. Boigny helped Charles Taylor get training and support from Burkina Faso and Libya. Madame Sirleaf was in a forced exile when Taylor went to Liberia after training in Libya....Get your facts straight.

There has been peace since Liberian was ousted in 2003. Elections were held in 06 Ellen Johnson the first female head of state of Africa was Elected as president. She will be president for 6 years (1term). Today streets are being paved, businesses are returning to Liberia. Money and Investors are flowing into Liberia. We have electricity in some areas, we have running water in some areas, we have a trash system back in place to clean the country. We are getting back to where we were before 1989.

If you want to go back to the real root, it was the transatlantic slave trade where Europeans stole Africans and US enslaved them, some returned into the area of Liberia and created a country over the indigenous people that grew into this chaos and death. Without the complicity of Europe and US, the indigenous people would have been living as they were for thousands of years.

True - killing your own people sounds ludicrous There was alot of inter Greek fighting in the Ancient era. It was since they were island communities - they knew little of their neighbors. Different things scare people. When we stop being scared, wed stop fighting each other.

It always depends on what your definition of “your own”. It always changes and so do our labels. In all reality they’re completely pointless. In America I often lose sight of the true differences between any real ethnicity or race. Appearances sure, but more or less people are the same, it just depends on their experience, which culture can shape. There’s a massive difference in American culture for black Americans and Africans moving to America which would be ACTUAL African-Americans. In fact I find that African Americans are more religious, studious, and have hard work ethic (for the most part). Of course not everyone is the same but people generally follow their cultural norms without realizing it. Liberians even are different from their African counterparts because of their American influence. But I can continue to find differences in culture and that’s what people do. At the end of the day I’m mixed with many European ethnicities, Eurasian Ethnicities and Semitic ethnicities even a small bit of Canadian/American Native, S. Indian, Papua, and a little bit Omotic Ethiopian. Essentially that’s where the terms “white” or “black” people come from while outside of such an ethnically diverse country such as the USA it’s uncommon to find as much DNA admixture. So while ancient Mediterranean’s considered themselves a separate race in modern terminology they would be considered “white” so would “Semitic peoples”, Iranian ethnic groups, Indian Ethnic groups and of course Europeans. It’s even believed that most “white” or European ethnicities come from the Mal’ta Buret’ culture located in Siberia, a culture which resembles Native American cultures and is believed to eventually become the Scythians. So all in all I believe eventually will come a growing desire from globalization and the ideological thought that people must join together to create one human race voided of any particular dominate ethnic group through mass assimilation.

Liberia is a state that was founded by freed American slaves in the 1840s. The Liberians who were descended from those slaves were known as Amero-Liberians. The capital of Monrovia is named after US president Monroe who helped the freed slaves found the country. Liberians are fiercely pro-American. Liberia was America's greatest African ally during the Cold War. Liberia has many natural resources which could very well help the US. That is why we should intervene.

However, it is hidden in books and you might have trouble finding it if you dont read. The U.S. does not discuss Liberia but its influences on Liberian social, economic, political spheres are extremely visible when in the country.
