Sometimes cops get calls for crimes and they get a description of the suspect. When cops see a person that matches the description, they can engage in a mere encounter but it’s better when they can establish probable cause to detain the person so they can identify them and see who the person is and maybe see if it’s the person they are looking for. In this case they witnessed the individual jay-walk which gave them the probably cause to detain him. Once they got his ID, they saw that he wasn’t who they were looking for and he went on his way. The cops were professional and calm throughout this interaction and everything went smoothly. It’s understandable for a black man in America to feel as though they are being profiled racially based on everything that is going on, but most of the time police are just doing their jobs and investigating an incident.
@niajayda
@niajayda 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnweatherwax1244 What are you on about they never mentioned anything about him matching a suspects description? They just used him jaywalking as an excuse to detain him, they had no right to search him either but because he agreed they did anyway. Let's be real no white man would be stopped let alone searched for jaywalking and this was 100% racial profiling. And the fact that other officers started showing up supports that, why would he need backup for someone jaywalking? That clearly indicates that he was profiling Salehe and not just pulling him up for an infraction.. did he even give him a ticket in the end? Or did he let him go cause he found out he works for Versace and realized he fucked up🙄
@johnweatherwax1244
@johnweatherwax1244 3 жыл бұрын
@@niajayda I was offering an example about why a police officer would stop someone for jaywalking and check their ID and then let them leave. My explanation also explains why they have more officers as back-up. In your mind, there is no other reason that they stopped this man besides that they are all horrible racists and they just wanna make a black man cry in broad daylight yada yada yada. If they had stopped this man because he matched the description of another individual, it would not be a good tactic to tell the man why he was stopped because he would be more relaxed believing they only stopped him for jaywalking. Once they talked to him and identified him they let him go because they realize he was not someone they were looking for.

My husband I and were in our 50s when we were pulled over in a very nice neighborhood in Bloomfield, NU. We were taking our leisurely monthly drive, in our new Benz, to a doctor's appointment. We made a RIGHT turn down the tree-lined street of his office, when we heard a siren. My husband immediately pulled over. Without explanation, the cop asked for our credentials. When I asked what we'd done wrong, he stated "you made an illegal LEFT turn." We had been on the same street for about 5 miles before making that RIGHT turn. He then asked "where are you going?" (What?!!) When my spouse answered "I'm taking my wife to her doctor", the cop looked over at me. Even though I had a pair of bright red crutches resting by my legs, he asked "where is your doctor's office?" Now I'm pissed. Sensing my rising agita, my husband simply placed his hand over mine to calm me down. When my husband pointed down the street, without another word or even addressing our "illegal" turn, the cop handed back our credentials and walked away. My husband scolded me lightly stating "you get angry and I end up dead." Of course, he was right. But, it left me feeling violated , insulted and angry. I clearly see how we die so easily.

I see the cop trying to de-escalate, but really? 3 cops. He said "y'all are pulling up, im uncomfortable", as if another police car was coming up. You don't need 4 cops for a jaywalking civilian. Don't ask a man for his ID when you can see his hands knowing it has to be in his pockets, wait for him to reach, then say oh no don't reach in your pockets and repeatedly ask if he has a weapon. Like are you blind? Or dumb? Or trying to bait him? And then asking if he consented after you already started patting him down. Fail. Fail. Fail.

It's not about the fact that he probably technically did jaywalk. It's about the fact that if he were another skin color he MOST LIKELY would have been given a pass, and would not have been stopped. That's the point. The police officers who are claiming the "narrative was changed" know very well that they had the "technical reason" to stop him which is jay walking WHILE BLACK. That's not to say jaywalking isn't wrong but they were probably 800 White people who did the same thing that day, probably some of which the cops saw and just left it alone since they have better things to do (except when you're black). Or some cops are assigned to strictly enforce such quality of life or traffic offenses and others are not. unfortunately, he actually did consent by not refusing and that was a mistake. He was nervous and didn't want the cops to escalate, so he didn't explicitly refuse the patdown and he followed their instructions. There is something about 5th amendment that you have to specifically invoke it and just not speaking doesn't activate your right to remain silent. I think it's the same with the 4th amendment. So by cooperating, he consented. He should have said "I do not consent to any search of myself or property" and then it would be against his will. Crazy all the loopholes one has to jump through just to retain their rights, huh?

Im a Mexican American who was always getting stopped by police whether it was walking or driving.Cops searched and once I complied, they left. So I always thought that if you cooperate with police, then these types of situations wouldn't escalate.I would always say to myself when watching these types of videos "wow, why are these "Usually black people getting so angry? Why wont they just cooperate?" And then it struck me, these usually targeted black people are angry because it's embarrasing especially when your a law abiding citizen and your getting detained in front of people.Its obvious that police wont do the same to white people walking around beverly hills because its the "norm" . If a cop pulls a black person for whatever reason, lets say for example not using a signal light, Ok give the guy a ticket and move on, but police then try to search the car without probable cause,Its like they ha e a number of arrest that they have to do to meet a quota. So now i understand the anger. Because black people know that even if cops are being nice, they are low key trying to get the person to get aggresive so they can justify their behavior.

People in Beverly Hills jaywalk in front of squad cars regularly and police don’t stop to search them for weapons and warrants. So why did they stop this guy to do a warrant and weapons check? The issue here is not whether it’s against the law to stop or even cite him for jaywalking. The issue is the disproportionate application of the law. People who don’t understand this concept either don’t have the capacity or simply choose not to. It’s not complicated.
