(excerpt)
From: VAI DVD 4204 Roberto Devereux (Donizetti)
One of Sill's most acclaimed portrayals was as Queen Elizabeth 1 in Donizetti's intensely dramatic opera about Elizabeth and Essex. In this 1975 production from the Wolf Trap Festival, Miss Sills is joined by John Alexander, Susanne Marsee, and Richard Fredricks. Maestro Julius Rudel is the conductor of this live production, devised and directed by Tito Capobianco. An essential addition to every opera lover's video library.

FIERCE!!!! This woman was a tremendous singing actress...she never let up during the entire scene...I mean, all of the breaths had dramatic intent, even. I was checking her out at the end of the aria with the chorus going, etc. Many artists take that time to chill out, coast and save themselves for the big high note at the end. Not Beverly!!! She took 1 measure to swallow and then came right back in, almost as if Donizetti wrote it that way, capping with a stellar High D at the end. FIERCE!!!

She is just extraordinary. Not just the singing, the voice, the pitch, the acting - but singing the last part of the aria while leaning back in a chair. That is so difficult to do, because you cannot really get your air underneath you, and yet there she is, just rockin' it out!

I absolutely LOVE Sills in this role (and any other role for that matter). She is by far the best Queen Elizabeth I've heard! The really unique thing is that probably the role actually demands a heavier, darker voice than Sills, whose lyric coloratura was probably lighter than one would think this role needs. And yet, Sills was SUCH an artist, both musically and dramatically, that she knew exactly how to make it work, so that her Elizabeth was utter perfection! BRAVA!!!

Absolutely legendary! Despite her somewhat widened vibrato in 1975, she still had a fantastic voice, a lyric coloratura voice with tremendous dramatic power and amazing versatility. She gave her all, going down to those effective chest notes and then ascending to her accurate, bright top. Besides, no one can deny: her despair, remorse, sadness is visible and very haunting, one can feel all the complex emotions of Elisabetta. A once-in-a-century interpretation!

A very great portrayal by one of the most inspiring singers of the 20th Century.

S R I wish she would have as well, but I have to think back. This role is Very Dramatic! The singing is heavy for at least 70% of the night. I think sutherland’s heaviest role would’ve been Norma/Anna Bolena? Which is mostly lyrical with some heavy ensemble moments. I don’t know that this role would have suited her well? I think just based on her repertoire she preferred a role focusing of the weight of the sound, rather than the agility and long legato line? Just a thought.

This out door performance pales by comparison to her performances at NY City Opera where her voice sounded warm and large - thanks to the acoustics of the theater. Sorry to nit-pick: 'soubrette' is not a voice type, it is a character type. As for 'too light?' 'Too light' to do . . . what? Be heard over the orchestra? To sing the notes, bring the character to life, create a memorable impression, carry the production? I heard Miss Sills sing this role in 2 performances in Cincinnati in 1974. 'Too light?' Only if by 'light' you refer to something incandescent, and by 'too' you mean 'Wow! Better squint, lest you go blind from the brilliance.'

This is probably her greatest role. Her voice is too thin, too light, and too small for this repertoire, but she was so musical and so intelligent that she managed to pull off a heartbreaking interpretation, knowing full well it would ultimately destroy her delicate instrument. Yesterday, I watched Sondra Radvonovsky's version, which is sung with a voice much more suited to this role (minus the labored coloratura), but she didn't make a tenth of the impact Sills does. I have always wondered what Callas would have done with this role before 1955.

Callas’ never tackling this role is probably what bumps me up the most in reference to the roles she never went on to sing. Nowadays Marina Rebeka could potentially give a much more greater justice to the role than Sondra for whom belcanto has never truly worked well…
@Shahrdad
@Shahrdad Жыл бұрын
@@spyridonroumeliotis7831 I too have felt Sondra was much more of a late Verdi and Puccini singer than bel canto. For me, she has never had the true mastery of the fine-points of bel canto, such as fluent coloratura or ability to trill well. She can approximate it, but it's never the real thing. Elisabetta worked for her the best, as it showcased her strengths without displaying her weaknesses. I heard her as Medea a couple of weeks ago, and she didn't embarrass herself. Her low notes are still lacking, and she doesn't have the myriad of colors one got from Callas, especially the truly venomous colors Callas produced in certain passages. But it was an honorable performance. She deserves kudos for just having the guts to attempt the role.
@spyridonroumeliotis7831
@spyridonroumeliotis7831 Жыл бұрын
@@Shahrdad I agree on the fact that she’s a great Verdi and Puccini performer. Especially on the roles that lack excessive coloratura because honestly I think she can’t handle it. This is one of the reasons I really find her Amelia to be to-the-point and probably also why I think she’s very well suited for Puccini and I really like her Tosca. She’s frequently not capable of creating this dramatic effect you also referred to albeit. To be honest I was rather sure she would do a more than decent job with Medea. A friend of mine watched her last week and said the same thing as you did. Although I don’t think Sondra could ever have a voice colored in the way the one of Callas was and certainly not capable of the electrifying effect Callas gives you even by listening to any of her Medea recordings (especially the Florence, Scala and the Dallas one). For me Sondra has a big voice that under certain circumstances generates an imposing effect within a specific pool of roles, and that makes her a great artist.
@Shahrdad
@Shahrdad Жыл бұрын
@@spyridonroumeliotis7831 I think the want of a great chest register was the greatest detriment to her Medea. Callas's assumption will remain untouchable. I think Sondra was also sabotaged by McVickers' awful sets, costumes, and direction. He turned this the Princess of Colchis and the granddaughter of the sun god Helios into a crazed fishwife that slinked and slithered on stage. The mere presence of Medea should evoke awe. As the NYT said, she looked like she swam to Corinth. And the cast looked like they walked out of the Netherfield ball in Pride and Prejudice and mingled with the Pirates of the Caribbean.
