Here's how much PS5 storage space you're actually getting on a new Playstation 5 for games! While Sony says you get 825 GB of SSD memory on PS5, it turns out you get much less than that! In this video, I show you how many GB of storage space you should actually expect on a brand new Playstation 5. New PS5 users should strongly consider both M.2 SSD Expansion upgrades & external USB 3.1 Hard drive for PS5. This will guarantee that you get the best Playstation 5 experience. On a new PS5 you can only expect to get 667 GB of SSD memory for games & apps.. That is far less than 825 GB! ...
If you're interested in which External HDD & M.2 SSD upgrades I recommend, you can use the links below to purchase my recommendations from Amazon! They are influencer affiliate links, so if you do decide to purchase - It will help support the channel! Thank you in advance.

Because of the wealth of additional data storage options, devs have been increasingly carefree when it comes to being efficient with space. Before developers had to work within the confines of physical media. But now we have games like Battlefront 2 that take up 100GB+ of space. Major developers need to stop passing the buck to consumers when it comes to lazy compression.
@bittnerbot1
@bittnerbot1 2 жыл бұрын
On the counterpoint, though I do agree with yours, mass amount of compression on something like battlefront would cause *massive* load screen slowdown. If Bf2 ended up being ~25GB, we would have double or triple of the already decently long load time due to the system needing to decompress textures and whatnot.

If CD Project Red can compress the Witcher 3, including every single update and DLC the game has, enough to fit on a *_SWITCH CARD_* then every single other developer has no excuse for why their games take up so much memory. Obviously different games would still be bigger than the Witcher 3, online constantly updated games like Destiny 2 for example, but that doesn't mean they can't still do their damn most to compress the game as much as they possibly can.

It sucks really,having a "825GB" console that only gives you around 650 GB of storage,and to expand it you need a pretty expensive and capable SSD to fit the PS5's needs.Also the built in one is soldered on the board,so if you choose to use the internal and just keep deleting and installing games it will wear out and become slow or completely die,and since it's soldered you need to replace the whole motherboard

I currently have over 50 games downloaded in total.... with only 11% of total storage used. Most of them I downloaded from the massive library of games that Game Pass offeres. Another factor to take into consideration is the conversion of units. I don't know what scale it uses, but 825 GB in the 1000's scale is equal to 768 GiB in the 1024's scale. So straight up you it seems like you "loss" almost 55 "GB". Even so, 100+ Gigs for the operating systems is insane; I mean not even a fresh install of Windows takes 100 Gigs.

@glitchy_weasel
@glitchy_weasel 2 жыл бұрын
@@prakharvermaT1nO There is mainly two units of measurements when it comes to storage or memory. The 1000's scale (1000 bytes = 1kilobyte kB; 1000 kB = 1 megabyte MB; etc). The 1024's scale is the same but multiples of 1024 at each unit. According to ISO 80000, the names and prefixes for the 1024's scale are kibibyte KiB, mebibyte MiB, etc. But many people still use the normal prefixes to refer to the 1024's scale (e.g Windows does that). So because the same amount of bytes appears 'larger' on the 1000's scale, that's what is generally used in marketing and printed on the box. But when plugged in into a system that uses the 1024's it appears 'smaller'. But in reality they both describe the same amount of bytes. But I may be talking out of my ass here because I don't own a PS5.

For example when I plug my 5 TB (1000's) external disk into Windows it says that it is 4.58 TB, which may throw off many people. But that's actually ok because 5 TB = 5,000,000,000,000 bytes ~= 4.58 TiB.

That’s what I’m saying this video makes it out like Sony’s scamming people and you have all these people shocked. Like basic storage knowledge tells you if you buy a 1TB ssd for example it’s not PRECISELY 1000GB. It’s more like 956 or something like that. THEN you have the operating system. We have windows 11 which takes like 64+ GB so I can imagine something comparable to PlayStation systems since it’s likely the most up to date software. If you look at all these points, it adds up and shows that’s why it’s 667. Either way Consoles are still a massive worthwhile alternative for hundreds of thousands of gamers to get in with the latest and greatest all in a very remarkably cheap package largely due to Sony’s massive market power. Vs the consumer alone which more than likely is dealing with zero market power/investment so you’re spending the maximum of thousands of dollars if they wanted to build their own similar rig

I sure do like how these big gaming companies decided to put the storage problem on the consumer. Seriously, 1tb on last gen wasn't enough. With ever increasing game sizes they knew it wasn't enough for this gen either. They should have at least doubled the size (2tb), it would have at least looked like effort on their part, and while it would have cost them a bit more, with gaming popularity at an all-time high they'd make up the cost through game sales with a quickness.
@d8l835
@d8l835 2 жыл бұрын
They technically did that with compression. Alot of the ps5 games are close to half the size of their ps4 counterparts...which is almost the same as doubling storage space. Most peoples problem with this is they have older gen titles on the system, as their isnt many new games out yet..they take up a large chunk of your storage and the "other" section bloats up with every ps4 title you have installed

The best solution for me in terms of cost effectiveness was definitely to add an external 3TB SSD. Was much cheaper than getting those M.2 SSD expansions that I see people opting for. Coz those are definitely probably better in the long run but I like the simple option since my console is pretty much sitting in one corner in my setup forever so having the SSD by cable doesn't bother me too much visually. Great video as always 👊🏿💯

Except M.2s have an actual lifespan. And as I'm aware of, the ps5 doesn't have the ability to monitor that yet or is a feature I didn't know about yet. @@mrfinder18 Yeah I think it may eventually be introduced as a feature. I have no idea. I just went with the easy option at launch, before the extended SSD was even an option when they introduced the patch that would let people install them. So for me was a no brainer coz my console just sits in a corner so just went old school 3TB external SSD + cable and was down wit it. More space than I'll ever need coz I never play that many games at any given moment anyways.

Hey John, hope all is well! Ironically, encountered something rather peculiar in regards to storage allocation. Last night, I popped in GoW 2018, which lead to an “insufficient storage” notification. What’s funny is, my entire library of PS4 titles are stored on an external, which at this time isn’t connected to my PS5. To make matters more confusing, there’s 198GBs of dormant data allocated to the SSD/console storage tabbed as “other”. Curiously, I selected/deleted a few media files which should free up 3GBs…essentially? Well, not in this case. “Other” is now reflecting an amount of 201GBs lol. Not only is my console struggling with basic math, but also clueless to file/data directory. Any suggestions? Any feedback is appreciated!

dont forget that playstation operation system uses empty harddrive space as virtual memory. so it will effect both harddrive and ingame memory usage and UI load / swap speeds. and that at both PS 4 - PS 5. the more full the harddrive the slower the system UI and the more it depends on precaching the system data, it will be more effecting any ps4 system then ps5 but even there it seems to be used like that.

It's false advertising in a way. You have a 825GB storage but then they take more and more for their system update resulting in less for actual storage. They should have two drives. One for system and one for storage. This might also resolve the next issue. Sony's update situation. A game update first downloads and then copies. So you have to have enough space on your hard drive for the update to download in the first instance. I have been micromanaging my system since I got it. Removing games not frequently played in favour of those I play often but I rely on installing from disk or downloading again from the Sony network as I don't run an external drive or internal expansion. Need those prices to come down IMHO.

There’s no point in having 2 drives, one for OS and one for game storage. It complicates things and is probably more expensive, not to mention that when you buy an electronic with a data storage system, it’s a given that you’re going to have some space taken up by OS and formatting
@avylynn4523

Sony is not scamming you guys lmao 😂 It’s as advertised an 825GB ssd. How any storage component works is it’s never true to the number because any storage that you can buy right now reserves some of that space to allow you to use much of the rest for your convienence.for example, I just bought 256 micro sd for my steam deck later this year. I do NOT expect EXACTLY 256GB. I EXPECT something close like 230GB. The same is true for ANY storage component. THEN you have playstations software it uses. So like for example Lets say I have a pc that uses windows 11. Windows 11 is like 64GB+ for your system. Now that’s the most up to date software for computers right now. Now it’s not hard to imagine Sony’s is up there with it so it makes perfect sense for the system to result you with 667GB after everything.
@UltraCasualPenguin
@UltraCasualPenguin 2 жыл бұрын
No, it's not. How many times I have to explain this to you idiots? SSD is sold to you as 825000000000 bytes or 825 gigabytes (GB). Which is the real size of it. That's in base-10. Computers use binary, base-2. Computer sees that as 825000000000 ÷ 1024³ = 768,34 gibibytes (GiB) Now take away space required by system (roughly 80-110 gibibytes depending on system) and overprovisioning (1-2% of total capacity, most likely 8-10 gibibytes in this case) And you're left with 665 gibibytes (GiB) in this case.

That’s not the reason. If you look at Mark Cerny’s road to PS5 presentation, he says that the reason was the size of the SSD matched up better with the channels used in the controller, allowing them to make it faster. Also, fast SSDs are expensive, so the cheap ones you’re thinking about would never come close to the specs needed for the PS5

If you are seriously considering a ps5 or xbox sx then you must also consider extra storage too. Ps5 has more options and is for the most part cheaper but is a bit harder to install where as xbox is plug and play but your only option is the 1tb seagate proprietary ssd at the moment (this will change in time but at current costs could be the more expensive option). Here's not fully understanding which console you are attempting to rip out by writing XboxX? U mean the One X or the SX? Well both consoles have decompression hardware for increasing storage space to fit more games.

@@mrjones29 Agree but X box lags far behind the PS5 on compression technology because they modelled the new chipset on the old, Sony however reinvented the build and redesigned it to eliminate bottlenecks that had restricted consoles for yrs.

People have already done the math and, in general, the PS5 can store more games than the 1TB Xbox Series X. All next-gen games are significantly smaller on the PS5 thanks to better compression.

Then why does COD Vanguard need 89 gb of space on the PS5 compared to every other version?

@@DeftestAphid2 which versions are you comparing to? Any version without 4k textures is immediately eliminated. Streaming textures is what adds to the extra file size. It's a buffer.

Yeah PS5 internal SSD is not much, but most of the PS5 game's size is actually smaller than xbox (maybe PC). so I think that 667GB Almost equal to 900GB for other platform. Like Subnautica, if Im not mistaken. PS4 is around 20GB,while PS5 version is only 5GB. Also,just maybe. Because that SSD is the fastest/custom made. If they use 1TB,I think the price will be more expensive.
