I finally found a point that gave me a feeling that it wasn’t authentic. It had too many hinges and lack of weathering for a 9000-year-old artifact. I decided to send it to Jim Bennett of PremierAuctionsGroup.com to have it checked out. If it is authentic, then Jim will give me a Certificate of Authenticity and if not, he will let me know. I also sent him 3 other points to have them checked as well. Take a look and see what I found out!
If you want to have an artifact authenticated, here is the link to Jim's page:

Finding modern replicas is rare, but can happen. I think my Hopewell point is authentic and I'm not sure about the Kirk. The authenticator saw things he didn't like and didn't want to put his reputation on the line, so he declined to authenticate it. You have a great day too!

Thanks! Those two were finds from the last couple of years. Yeah, they can definitely make some good looking points. I'm not too worried about finding them on the rivers. If someone was going to plant a point, the beaches on the Ohio are all heavily hunted and would be the place to do it. I think it is a isolated case and I'm not worried about finding another one. Just pays to know the signs of a modern point, just in case.

@OutdoorRetiree i kinda came around to that as i finished the video. I have an antler tip that i want looked at at some point. Definite grinding marks, not rodent teeth marks. Really weird. Where the grinding starts, it made like stair steps toward the break. Not sure what it would have been, but it came from the family farm, and i feel pretty confident that in the last 200 years, making something like that doesn't make any sense for my people to have done.
@OutdoorRetiree
@OutdoorRetiree Жыл бұрын
@@jvleasure I guess you could email him to see if an antler is something that he can authenticate. He has the equipment to give it a real close inspection. It is usually easy to spot rodent teeth grinding on an old antler, so you me have an artifact.

.I see that the experts can decide if a piece is fake. Here there is no way that a piece found is false because there is no one who walks through the places where we look for the tips, we arrive at places that only we have trodden apart from the natives. Congratulations on the certification achieved in some points. Blessings.

I agree and it happens once in a while. Sometimes, people do it as a trick on a friend of theirs that hunts arrowheads with no harm intended. Even though the authenticator wouldn't paper it, the guys in this area think it is authentic and the hinges are just a characteristic of Hornstone chert. I'm keeping it either way. Thanks for watching!

Seems to me it would be easy enough to fool the authenticator. Put your newly knapped point in a rock tumbler with some dirt, sand, and water mixture and let it turn for 2- 3 weeks.

I think they look at more than just the hinges being broke off or worn down. Things like mineral deposits such as iron on the arrowhead that can only get there over a long period of time.

That's just down right dirty, I would think other point hunters put that there, Maybe trying to draw you into a spot?, Just come back from the Ohio river, I went closer to Indiana today About 5 miles North of where the great Miami river comes into it, I didn't even find a flake lol, But still a good day on the river, Thanks for the advice in the video, That really makes me mad that you had to spend money on those to get them authenticated
@OutdoorRetiree

I think a flint knapper accidentally broke the base off and thought it would be funny to put it where someone would find it and think they had a good find. Oh well, no big deal. I had about the same luck as you today. I was on the Ohio for a few hours and only found 1 flake. I did find a good bit of fire rock, but no good stuff. To me, the cost was worth finding out that it was modern so that whoever put it there can see that it didn't work if they search KZfaq to see if someone found a Kirk snapped base point recently. Good luck on your next trip!

@@flinteastwood7179 You may be right. I wasn't sure about the Kirk, but I thought the Hopewell was authentic, so I was surprised with that one. Jim is the only authenticator I'm familiar with, so I sent them to him. I know an authenticator has a reputation to worry about and may not authenticate something when they see one little thing they don't like, but that doesn't mean they are modern. Several people have said that hornstone leaves more hinges than some other types of chert. I haven't found many hornstone pieces and most of what I find doesn't have hinges on them. Thanks for the vote of confidence in those points being the real deal.

I found a fake last year, but it was an obvious fake. One of those gift shop Arrowheads, and it was right below a house of kids known for throwing stuff over the bank. I don’t know guy, looks totally authentic to me in the image. I’ve found several points with many hinges. I think Jim may have just been cautious on that, with the base missing and identifying the type. There was a big stink that went on between Jim and a certain KZfaqr a few years ago. Just looks authentic to me. I Enjoy the show, watch em all

Thanks Scott! I have one of those gift shop fakes and a family member gave me. These two don't look anywhere close to the gift shop points. I'm keeping them because like you said, Jim may have been cautious because his reputation is on the line. Good luck and I'm looking forward to your next video!

Not the result I was expecting. I have seen fakes planted on people many times, even had buddies do it to me, but usually the fake is really obvious, and maybe these are in real life, but they look good on the computer. When somebody does that it is really not funny that they are messing with you, cost you money in this case, and it also really screws things up for people who are actually trying to learn about the past and the artifacts and the traits of different sites. I don't mind having a joke played on me so much as not knowing whether or not what you think you know to be true is really true, and messing up the link to the past that comes with finding an ancient point. To play devil's advocate, Bennett has to err on the side of caution, like in criminal justice where they say it is better to let a hundred guilty men go free than to convict one innocent man. In his case, it is better to refuse to paper 100 authentic points than to paper one bad one. If he has any reservations, he cannot authenticate it, which is what makes him a good authenticator unlike some other ones who will paper anything if the price is right. I will say this, hornstone is prone to retaining those hinges, particularly on beach finds along the river. I don't know if they are more protected than field finds or what is going on. In fact, I pulled about 1,000 hornstone beach finds (mostly broken pieces) just a few minutes ago to confirm, and many of them had fresh looking hinges, so the hinges don't bother me a great deal given the chert type and location where you found it, but I'll admit, after you pointed it out the serrations do look strange on that Kirk. So, unfortunately, I think these pieces could still be authentic, but even if they are, you now will always be skeptical. Since you are seeing the points in real life and they concerned you, and Bennett agreed, I'd say something is off with them, but they are not your typical planted fakes, which tend to be either really crappy museum gift shop flake points or amazing, ten inch grey ghost museum quality pieces. Sorry for the long comment, just a lot of things to think about on this one, and hate to see it happen to a nice guy like you if they really are planted fakes.
@OutdoorRetiree
@OutdoorRetiree Жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy and no problem for the long comment! I'm keeping both of them because you are right, you never really know if they are fakes or if Jim just wasn't sure. I haven't found a lot of hornstone pieces so I am not as familiar with it as I am Kanawha Black, which typically won't have any hinges, like that Big Sandy in the video. I do have one of those "typical" fakes given to me by a family member and it is very obvious that it was recently made. Oh well, I'll keep on searching for the real deal. Like I said in the video, 99.99+ percent of what we find is authentic. Good luck!
