For anyone wondering about comparisons to the previous models, the DT770 is still worth considering for those who want more 'V', but I think the tuning is better on the DT 700. The DT-990 with fresh pads is pure pain and the DT-900 is far more tolerable... it would be interesting to compare them with both models having worn pads, maybe after 6 months of use.

sennheiser hd25, best closed back I have ever tested. I bought a dt770 80Ohm, the mids were so scooped, I put them back in the box and returned them. Still looking for a decent, light and mobile closed back, but hd25 kills everyone. not the most resolving and natural, but boy, it is young sounding, not old fart audiophile nice.

hd25, with large pads and copper cable though. Hd 25 you can run them balanced, beyer you can not, shame on beyer still no balanced cans!! my amp is good balanced, but really worse SE.

Hi! I'd have been much more interested in a direct comparison with the previous models tbh. Because the DT 700 pro X is 250€, while the old DT 770 is 130€. Is the price different worth it?

Did you check the "actually possible" detail retrieval of these new drivers when the foam discs in the front of the drivers are removed (+a bit of EQ)? I am curious if they are able to outperform e. g. the DT 770 in terms of technical performance without the thick foam dampeners.

It is good to see the FR of studio headphones converges. Good for more consistent music production across the industry. Much better than 10 years ago when even 'reference' studio headphones have dramatically different FR.

Just for any1 else watching this. As someone with a big head. I have absolutely no issue with the comfort. The clamp force was never strong imo, but after like a week or wearing they went from comfy to the comfiest headphones ever. My only issue was the headband would fall down and after an hour or two the top of my head would be tired. But that went away. Idk if I changed something or what. But they're genuinely the most comfortable headphones I've worn in 20 years.

Very useful review for me. Thank You. I just received my DT 700 cans. I bought them for utility listening and guitar amp playing. They are adequate for that purpose. For my critical music listening I've been using my 'Focal Clear' for over 2 years now. When I listened to my usual music with the 700's for the first time I was kind of shocked how poor they sounded. Highs mids and bass response and balance is a deflating listening experience. That was kind of expected but still a shock though. The wear comfort takes a little while to get used to. As You said they clamp a little hard in the front. Well, not good for audio quality time but okay for internet audio etc.

I recently bought and compared a lot of headphones: HyperX Cloud 2 and 3, Razer Kraken 2019, HD599, HD560s, K612 Pro, K702, DT 900 Pro X, Sundara. A few years ago I also tried the DT 990 Pro. I returned them all except the DT 900 Pro X. My problem with all, incl the 'so neutral' K612 Pro and HD560s is they still sound too V-shaped to me. My 2nd choise would be the HD560s for audio signature and great base. The DT 900 Pro X is still not great or perfect, but the best so far. It also has great comfort with just too high clamping force but that will be better over time. Specially the upper base till mids are very important for me. And I'm sensitive for treble so in that view I don't like most modern headphones at all, I rather have the opposite of a V-shape. The Sundara had the best comfort but was also the most expensive, and it's outside the headphone as loud as inside, and lacks base. I wish I could try the HD600, HD650, HD660S and HD660S2, but they're all way too expensive or because they're old models unavailable anymore.

I have the AKG K371 and they're fine if you don't care for bass. I bought Phillips Fidelio X2 and they are really really muffled sounding, but nice bass. I had to slam a V shape on eq, with treble maxing out, and they're ok. They sound like some other bass heavy M&0 that I have, except open back for the X2. I'm looking to add treble and vocals to that bass without forcing it in eq.

Late update to the squad: got the 700 x in three days ago and I fully resonate with everything Andrew said... They're blunt, they lack surface level details (some things are missing in comparison to the er2se) and they're a bit muddy. The bass is their sweet spot, with loads (perhaps excessive) of subbass and midbass... But the rest is, to put it simply, not good enough for the asking price. The thing that truly made me return them is the comfort tho, because while the pads have plenty of room and depth, they don't distribuite pressure very well due to a combination of shape, clamp force and small swivel ability, so ultimately they end up HURTING after twenty minutes or so. I'm going to praise the build and looks tho, they're pretty and sturdy!

I got the DT 700 Pro X at launch. My use case has been for monitoring while recording (these have superb isolation), as well as using at an office where I'm in an open floor plan and don't want to disturb my coworkers. Initially, I did think that the DT 700 Pro X was a bit harsh or sibilant, but that wore off within the first couple days of use. Compared to the DT 770 Pro, the DT 700 Pro X were much better isolating and had a better tuning in the treble (there was a bit more harshness on the DT 770 Pro, but still not a major difference in my experience). I bought these with a grain of skepticism, but I've been very pleased with how they sound. Not the headphone I would use for mixing (I have the HD 560S for that), but they're very comfortable and don't press up against my ears like the DT 770 Pro and have a pleasant V-shape without being overwhelming in either region.

@@musicxxa6678 my experience has been that the sound stage is decently wide for a closed back headphone. Totally different pads comparing to DT880, 990, 770. They seem to be comfy. And different filter in front of the drivers - seems Beyer took the complains about screaming highs and no upper mids seriously. I just wonder how good is the DT700X comparing, say to very popular M50X (they squeak, just a bit too warm sounding and soundstage is small, pads are so, so and peal). I use Sennheisers for open back home use.

You mention some open-back alternatives to the 900 Pro X but I found the HD6XX way too intimate and the others not bassy enough. Is there anything in its price bracket that can match the 900 Pro X's soundstage and bass quantity/quality ? I've heard both the 700 and 900 and prefer the 900 so far (coming from 770) but I am intrigued that there maybe a better open back to switch to for me? Soundstage and bass are my 2 main interests, with smooth treble due to sensitivity (the 900 treble is bordering okay, 770 had too much sometimes).

Dt900 is hardly bright. About 3db over target in the highs is really not much at all. HD560S had a similar spike a bit lower and Sundara is similarly bright as well. Also, I disagree regarding technical performance of them. Detail is excellent on the dt900 and 700 Imo. The driver is fast, tight and responsive. Distortion is really low and decay is fast across the board with no noticeable ringing issues. Where else does detail come from I ask? I don't hear any smearing either. Soundstage is quite nice for a closed back on the dt700 and better than on most other closed backs I tried. The dt900 sounds more open, but the soundstage is fairly intimate for an open back I guess. Still not tiny by any means. More 3d than that of HD600, with better depth and center image, and close to an Elex I think. BTW, Mark at Super Reviews also rates dt900 highly and places them above the Sundara for technical performance. Not sure if I can agree, but I do think they are at least close and I prefer dt900 because it sounds fuller, snappier and more engaging to me. I find Sundara a bit smoothed over and somewhat weak/limp sounding in the low end compared to dt900 and other good dynamic driver headphones.

I've only tried the dt700 pro x and compared them with the dt770 80ohm version, and initial thoughts were 'WTF, where is all this bass coming from?? It is too much!!!' Then I compared them to my Dynaudio BM15 (with Dynaudio subwoofer), and it suddenly made sense. It basically sounds like a speaker system with subwoofer. Which on paper sounds amazing/brilliant/well done by Beyerdynamic, but then that does not mean the sound is actually all that comfortable, as having subwoofers on your head is not the same as having them in your room. Frequency response wise dt770 sound closer to Dynaudio, there basically almost no to little difference while comparing speakers vs cans. So I'd say they're more accurate (I have pleather earpads on, btw, as the velour ones are too bright and sound weird in the high upper mids/highs). Otherwise well done, Beyer! Oh, PS, I removed the inner inlays on them to look if it attenuates the bass and adds some sparkle, but it seems to not do that much... Also, there's a bit less bass when I run them off my M-Audio 1010LT PC card, with which I am mixing, so that helps. Wanna try the 900 pro x now.

Have you ever tried an open-back headphone with the subwoofer on in your room? I've been wondering about that. The DT 900 has good bass extension, but it still sounds quieter than the mids to me.
@rayjuodas
@rayjuodas 6 ай бұрын
@@msd5808, I guess a subwoofer is a subwoofer, and a headphone will not match the bass levels properly (especially an open one!), unless you're getting something closed back like the above mentioned dt700 pro x, which will kinda sound similar, but at the expense of muddying some other frequency bands, as it's always a compromise! I got the 900's, they sound nicer to me (although I’d prefer to have a closed back headphone!), and bass amount seems more than adequate (remember - it is a compromise!). The bits I'm missing are to do with it being, in a way, even more V-shaped than the dt770 though. I am missing some narrow bit of mids that is usually making vocals stand out. I call them 'paper' or 'cardboard' frequencies, something around 1k. Basically, their absence makes the headphones sound 'cleaner', but instruments like vocals sit deeper in the mix and lack presence and warmth. This is the only drawback that I'm hearing in the dt900 pro x so far, apart from a slight imbalance in stereo panorama in my copy, which means that I'll have to replace it.
@msd5808
@msd5808 6 ай бұрын
@@rayjuodas Interesting insights and your words for that frequency calling it paper or cardboard. I'm not sure how much I like the sound of the DT 900, though I think they are really meant for mixing audio, not enjoying music (I buy it nonetheless to listen to music). But what I meant by subwoofer was whether it's possible to turn on a subwoofer to the same music you're listening to on your open-back headphones, and then it adds bass to the room, which you hear through your open-back headphones, giving the sound a bass boost that it can't properly have without distortion in that kind of headphone. I think some people have tried it, but I forgot what they said, since it's kind of a weird idea and people would wonder what you're doing :)
@rayjuodas
@rayjuodas 6 ай бұрын
@@msd5808 Sorry, I misunderstood :) I just tried doing that just now and... well, it is an experience :) But subwoofer needs to be cranked up quite high in order to feel it through the headphones. Any way you look at it, it is quite a weird idea for sure :) To me dt900 do not lack bass at all, and I like bass. But obviously people have different preferences and experiences and so on. I may have to try the DT 700, yeah. I guess I thought its frequency response looked a little wonkier and usually it's said open-backs have truer sound (I question that when it comes to electronic music, though). I did like Beyer's older DT 1350 portable headphones which were a bit like the HD 25 from Sennheiser, but more powerful sounding. Wow both graphs look great. I'm surprised Beyer. No comparison to 1770 and 1990 ? I hated 1770 but i'm impressed by 1990. Wonder how these two stack up.

Vocals certainly i did a high quality research between dt and sennheiser however 560s/600 hd/650 And more In the other side the newer versions of dt (x series) After a long research cost me months I'm standing on dt side and 700 pro x particularly noted its closed back but from what i hear it will do the job surpsingly better than 900 pro x open back in all environments because open backed headphones needs a really quite environment noted u can't use it for recording and dt 700 pro x gives u a flatter overall response and i see someone on KZfaq recommending it over the 900 even in mixing saying that he preferred it more and felt like it's more reference headphone than the 900 one in varieties of environments So afterall sennheiser is for the people who is obsessed with the bass things and dt for the people who is looking for a reference flat headphone.. Btw, does the target FR account for hearing loss due to the normal aging process? We need to remember that past the age of 20 or so, most people start losing hearing starting from the upper highs and progressively into lower frequencies. By 30+ frequencies above 8k are also affected and by 50 or so even those above 2-4k are affected... It's a normal part of aging. So a headphone like dt900 with a mild under 5db treble boost may well sound neutral to most 30+ year olds with normal hearing. Whereas it may sound a little bright for a 20 year old and a little dull for a 50 year old. But still fairly close to neutral I assume... Considering out brains compensate for our hearing to some extent.

Picked up a 700 Pro X this week after trying the K371 for a while and coming to the conclusion that while I love the sound, the comfort level just isn't there for me. The K371 presses on my ears far too much and becomes quite uncomfortable after even 20-30 min. My impressions of the 700 Pro X aren't that dissimilar from Resolve's review so far. The pads are heaven, and I don't mind the clamp force, even after 3+ hours. I'm definitely getting that sort of muted or blurry quality when it comes to attack/decay of different notes as they are being played. The bass response comes off as noticeably more reserved/laid back compared to the K371 to me, which I believe shows up in the FR measurements as well. Overall detail, while not downright awful, is definitely a noticeable step down from some headphones in the price bracket, even a step down from the K371 in my opinion. The overall FR/tonality is great though. Haven't felt the need to EQ out of the box just yet. In the end, I'm not sure I will be sticking with the 700 Pro X. The lack of detail and muted quality really is noticeable, even without A/B testing it with something that does that better. Might just have to cave in and try the Celestee. Already have an OG Clear and love it. Maybe try the DCA Aeon X closed as well, though I'm worried that might be a little power hungry (I use an ifi hip-dac for my portable setup).

This is the poorest review I have seen from The Headphone Show. I like very much the reviews done by Resolve BUT how a review on these two pieces could be done w/o comparison vs the predecessors?!!!! The DT770 pro and the DT990 pro are iconic headphones and skipping comparison vs the predecessors is equal to saying nothing. It might be that NA is the target of The Headphone Show and Audeze, for example, is iconic there, but in Europe, according to me, this is not the case.
