What an awesome set of cans. Physics-defying for sure.
Listening to them right now as I type out the description. Yeah, the treble really can be sibilant sometimes, but really only if you like to crank the volume a lot. It just seems less grating than my DT880 Pro at higher volumes. Also the upper treble detail really is lacking, that's probably the biggest flaw in these other than the fact that the bass is so powerful that some may not like it. It is very deep and rich and doesn't bleed into the mids at all though. It's a LOT better than the M50 bass, for example. Not muddy in the slightest IMO. A friend of mine is interested in the 880 and I'll be selling it to him as a Christmas present. I did forget to mention that the cord is a straight 10' cable terminated in a 3.5mm stereo connector. I bought mine used so I'm not sure if they come with a 1/4" adapter but I would be very surprised if they didn't as they are a professional headphone. Also, they are easily driveable by motherboard audio but will do a lot better with a soundcard with an amp like the Xonar DGX that I use. A phone can drive them, but you wouldn't want to use these portably with such a long cable that can't be replaced. What a great set of cans, I'll say it yet again, absolutely awesome, guys. Buy with confidence. Stay tuned for reviews of the AKG K240 Studio and AKG K271 Mk II.

THESE WILL RUN OUT OF A PHONE, BUT WONT GET VERY LOUD. I get a lot of questions about amping requirements. You need at least a low power amp (like a FiiO K3) to get these to above normal listening volume. This applies to the 80 ohm version only. 250 ohm absolutely requires an amp and I'd recommend a JDS Atom for that at least. Seeing as this video has become so popular, let me just point out here that I still hold the same opinion - for the unit that I reviewed in this video. I own another one of these now that DMS reviewed and while I still think it's a uniquely great option, the sound is indeed fairly sibilant and bassy. The K371 is more accurate FR wise but loses on soundstage, build quality, and comfort.

metal571 are the DT250 80 Homme the same as these headphones just differently branded? I have two pairs of those that I have had since 2002 LOL, like thanks apart from the cable they can withstand anything Seeing as I have thoroughly gotten into this expensive hobby, I definitely don’t need two of those LOL, if interested I can send you one of them. I’m pretty sure the different headphones but I don’t know where I read it that they were the same just differently branded

Interesting, then on the one who is mistaken in that case, yea Dt250 they take the same concept as the one you’re reviewing, close back, stu do you use for monitoring, that’s where I usually use that most of the time for mixing and editing audio recordings through college and university. Very very neutral pleasing sound astonishingly good imaging stereo separation for a close back,. Though the bastards do need some serious power to drive them, if interested I can send you one of my spares for review if you like. Like I said they built like a tank every part can be replaced and I’ve been using them literally for the last 15 years non-stop.

Excellent review even 7 years later. Bought the 80 ohm and absolutely love them. The bass is there...but tight as you said and sounds excellent. The highs are there as Beyerdynamic is known for, but not as bright. I'm listening to a lot of albums that I know inside and out, and it's like listening to these albums for the first time all over again. Thanks for the review as it helped me move away from the ATH 40x and 50x. I needed this...

Good to know you are enjoying it. But I couldn't. It was very sibilant, trebles were piercing my ears. So bright. So bassy. Very V-shaped headphone. Excellent for a 2 hour movie watching, but then fatigue will set in. Anyone looking for a neutral headphone should look elsewhere.

David Ekstrom Each of us can have a subjective definition of loudness :) 125db is definitely louder than 96db. Anything beyond 96db can lead you to a danger zone and can affect your hearing in a long term, especially if you intend to use them for extended hours. Since, I have not experienced T70’s I will stick to what DT770’s have to offer. These headphone are very comfortable if you want to use them for long hours. The omnidirectIonality and sound-space is very good. It feels like you are listening to music in an open space or a large room. You can easily pick where the sound is coming from. These are loud enough, they reach the uncomfortable levels on peak volume without any sound distortion. The bass is just right (it is natural and sounds how its supposed to without any artificial augmentation.) - You cannot go wrong with these. T70’s are about three times the price so they must be better in built and sound. What I know is that they are more analytical, which is good if you are using them in a studio setting for recording or editing music.
@metal571
@metal571 8 жыл бұрын
David Ekstrom You must not be reading the specs right, sensitivity is not the same thing as maximum SPL. T70s are not better, in fact a lot of the Tesla driver headphones Beyer makes are worse than their classic drivers.

Great and genuine review which is very rare these days.. Really happy with these cans. In your other videos you made an important distinction between the 80 Ohm and 250 Ohm versions, the harsh and sibilant sound of the 250 Ohm. That kinda clarified my doubt about the 250 Ohm and made me buy the 80 Ohm. Thanks a lot...

@@metal571 Thank you for the reply back. I've considered the K371's or even the 61's as well, they certainly have a more 'modern' form factor per say, with the mini XLR jack, a BT option, and all-around aesthetic. And I've been aware they sound pretty great too, but... I guess I've just lusted after the DT770's and, as you note, their particular soundstage for far too long, to turn back now. P.s. I realize you're not doing this anymore. And as your last upload was 2019. I hope whatever new endeavours you are attending yourself to have been both enjoyable and profitable for you. All the best!

Nice review! I've owned my A900X for 5 years and I love 'em, but now any substantial bass causes them to crackle pretty bad - probably from minor cushion tear, or from a damaged driver. I got the 770 Pro 250 Ohm from Massdrop for $130, can't wait to see how they compare to the A900X. I'm mostly hoping for better noise isolation since I plan to use 'em for my electronic kit, and I don't want to hear much of my strikes on the drum pads.

I found them great overall but with some songs, a bit too enclosed and with bass a bit too hollow (I am used to the open back Grado sound). However then I bought some softer valour pads from eBay (not even branded Beyerdynamic), and now these sound better to me, lost some bass but they are a lot more open, more pleasant and comfortable for longer listening sessions.

Really good and detailled review! I can truly confirm those facts..i love this pair of headphones from the first day i used it..since it sounds absolutely stunning and amazing for a closed-back design..i used the Audio Technica ATH-M50x before and wasn´t really satisfied since they sound very confined and narrow in sound stage compared to the Beyerdynamic. And the bass is also much more intrusive and less precise than this one...not to mention the wearing comfort, which is simply awesome at the Beyerdynamics..you can wear them for hours and hours without any discomfort..

Hey metal. Thank you very much for this great and detailed review, it's rare to find such quality analysis from a fellow audio fan. It definitely weighted on my decision to purchase the DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm. From everything you described, it seemed like the perfect Headphone that was looking for, and it was! Crisp crystal clear on highs, good mids, lows that are ready to boom when the source orders it to, just a great balance of enjoyment, colored, but that was exactly what I was looking for, after more than an year on a ATH M50 alone, which is really flat, great for audio editing, but I wanted more, for games, music and movies. I needed some color. I can't come back to the ATH now after having the DT on my head haha. Instrument separation is just superb on the DT 770 Pro, such fullness of detail everywhere. I like how accurately you describe Headphones on your reviews, it was exactly what you said, so, I'll put further trust in your other videos. I think we share a similar taste in audio, because of this, after I saw your review of the AKG Q 701, that will be my next investiment in the future, seems like a dream. Again, thank you very much for this review, it was truly helpful to me. I was kinda lost between choices, but not anymore after your review. I still want the HD 598, but it can wait until I get my hands on the Q 701 first. I have two questions: 1) What is the best Headphone to this day that you judge to have the best soundstage bellow the 300 price range, that you've experienced? 2) What are you thoughts on the ATH M50 compared to the DT 770 Pro? As I described, I find the DT to have more color, more instrument separation, more bass, and brighter treble, more fitting for games, movies and music listening than my old M50. Thank you. Best regards.

Thanks for the kind words. Too many reviewers just don't describe sound accurately despite having potentially even better trained ears than I do, which is sad. Glad I could help. I don't know about best soundstage under 300, best isn't the word I'd use to describe each of the mid-fi trio, but I'd say the Q701 has the widest soundstage with a bit of a hole in the center image and also less distinct imaging and direction. The DT880 isn't as wide as the Q701 but has much better imaging. The HD 600 has the smallest but it also has excellent imaging and when told to go "wide" the soundstage can really open up on it. It's quite reactive to the recording. To answer your last question, I never liked the M50. It always sounded terribly narrow in soundstage and the pads were never quite big enough to be comfortable over long periods. Combine that with the price they're going for nowadays and they're quite a poor value IMO. The DT770 is quite a fun bass cannon by comparison but at least it has awesome comfort, better speed, and really good imaging and an actual soundstage unlike the M50.
@metal571
@metal571 9 жыл бұрын
Oh also the 598 is very good for the money. Very flat and boring though. One of, if not the most, uncolored headphones in its price range. The HD 600 is a direct upgrade over it and I still feel strongly that the HD 600 may just be the most neutral open headphone in history.

metal571 Thanks for answering and the overall feedback. Yeah, the M50 was very uncomfortable and not even close to the DT's big round velour pads, which surprisingly, has a solid isolation. And thanks for describing the imaging! So useful again.

I've been using the dt770 80 almost every night for two years with a mid range gigabyte motherboard built in dac and find them great. The only thing i may do is replace the pads this year as they have squashed down a bit overtime and aren't quite as comfy/cushiony as they were. I've only compared them to some wired bose headphones which had overpowering bass compared to the beyers more tight bass. I was wearing them on the train a while ago and a sound engineer across the carriage started talking to me about them, aswel as his stax headphones (which he wasn't wearing) :) Nice review :)

I was impressed by the 32 ohm but the 80 ohm blew me away. My pair sounds exactly as metal571 said in the video. The soundstage is wider than my 58x and also it's more detailed. Soundwise they push the bass and the treble to the limit for an audiophile headphone. Very fun sound with thumping bass and sparkly treble. Mids are quite detailed and disconnected by the huge bass. Of course a bit pushed back in the mix but not by a huge margin. For 110 euro here in Italy they are the total package for a closed back. They got: Build quality, comfort, isolation, soundstage, fantastic sound quality. Easily 300 for the sound quality alone. If you take into account all the pro, they are a steal at this price. I had also the Denon 7200, I like the 770 80 better. I highly recommend them!

I know your comment is old, but Pro 80Ohms vs Pro 32Ohms is very different actually. They have both the same tonality (V shape) but the 80Ohms is very much bass boosted, while the 32Ohms significantly less so. The treble in the 80Ohms is also quite more painful. The 80Ohms is also significantly more sibilant. The only advantage of the 80Ohms version is the soundstage, which is much wider and the velour pads.

I was very surprised after hearing the 80Ohms version and getting the 32 Ohms one. Quite different, with the 32Ohms being much more balanced. You do loose that soundtstage though, but other than that it's better. I guess the best version out there gotta be the Pro 250Ohms one or the (rare) 600Ohms version, both of which share the tonality of the 32Ohms version, but do have soundstage to them. We can say that the 80Ohms one is the "black sheep" variant, cuz of that odd tuning, that's different to the rest of the versions.

So close to buying these today. Had a demo on just about everything, but the Custom one pro plus just edged in as the winner. 770's just sounded too neutral for me and nothing really popped, neither the highs or the lows. COP sounded just as good but with much better base. Hooked it up to the most powerful amp they had in the store and it blew the 770's out of the water at high volume. I found the COP more comfortable than the 770's too. Actually, probably the most comfortable set I've ever tried. Ordered the silver velour pads off of the 770 to go on the COP as I'm not really a fan of leather. 770's were definitely nice though, but lack of a double-sided cord and ugly cups weren't a selling point either.

I keep coming back to these! So I gifted myself with a pair of DT770 Pro 80 Ohms last year November as a 47th Birthday gift to self. I had been wanting to foray into the audiophile realms again since leaving it way behind me well over a decade ago - having given away most of my gear and records - silly me. I bought them online from a distributor here in South Africa, where I live, and at first I was taken aback when I first began to listen to them - and not in a good way. They were harsher and less forgiving than I had first expected. Vocals were quite sibilant, mids felt quite recessed, and the bass was too clinical. So I had buyers remorse. Perhaps the fact that I was listening to these un-amped plugged straight into my headphone jack listening to iTunes on my MacBook Pro was the fist booboo. I was not impressed. Also being 80 Ohm, the Mac’s internal amp doesn’t do this justice. Then I began to experiment with the audio players - Vox, Fidelia, Audirvana… and things started to sound better. Eventually I settled on Amarra Luxe Pro, which is buggy as hell, but boy does it make these Beyers sound so sweet. Yes, the burn in is real. It needs time to settle in and then those highs are not so high anymore, the bass flows like gravy, and the mids soothe you into other realms. Recently I added an iFi Zen Dac to my setup and I can honestly say that these DT770’s are now heavenly, and my daily drivers. The iFi Zen Dac is quite a little wonder, it takes some the harshness off the highs, and adds a warmth and clarity to everything you plug into it. My Grados, Koss’s, Klipsch’s, Hifimans and JBLs sometimes make an appearance depending on my mood - but I keep coming back to these Beyers. They’re like the most comfortable pair of loafers you own - ear loafers. And they surprise me every day with their musical range. I have not compared them to much more expensive headphones - my wallet will not allow it. So remember, if you’re gonna buy a set: burn the hell out of them, and make sure you amp/dac them to get the best out of them. You'll probably be disappointed without both these things. Stay home & stay safe everybody.

@@richardsteyn3403 Howzit bru! Good choice with the Beyers :). Yes, I'd advise burning these in for at least 50 - 100 hours. I use mine for music listening and video-conferencing - I'm not a musician or sound engineer - which these are normally marketed to. I own a few other hi-fi grade headphones, like Hifiman planar magnetics, and these still make my day. Also if you're streaming music via Deezer or Tidal - opt for the options where FLAC files are streamed as the DT770s really can pick out differences between lower to higher resolution digital music sources - especially when amped. And if you're listening to MP3s and FLACs from your hard-drive, then I recommend you play them through Amarra Luxe Pro or Audirvana - much better for audiophiles. iTunes on my MacBook Pro sucks for general audiophile quality music reproduction - and you can hear the difference on these headphones. I found the clamp-force on my ears a little too-strong for my liking - so I stretched out the headband a bit and it fits like a glove, I wear mine most of the day when I'm working from home in lockdown mode. But you might not have that same clamping issue. Anyway, I'm rambling on. Good luck, and hope you enjoy them :)

Just want to add something about the bass on these headphones. Yes, in stock form they do have a bit, just a bit of a bass boost, but I don't find them to be a bass-head headphone, and would NOT recommend them to people because of their bass, because they're still FAR FAR FAR away from having the amount of bass that some really popular basshead headphones have, like some of the JVC models, Audio Technica 700Pro's, hell even Beats Studio 2.0. I see them as fairly neutral headphones plus a bit of extra sub bass. Good for people who want a bit of extra kick, but still want an accurate headphone. However, it suffers from the same problems as all DT line Beyers, and that is the fact that the drivers are basically as they are out of the box, and they can't take EQ very well, meaning if you really want to turn them into bass-head headphones, you won't be able to do it. They don't have a lot of headroom and it's quite easy to make it lose control and make it sound boomy, even audibly distorted even when just boosting the bass by 3-4 db, and that's when plugged into an amp that could theoretically power 10 of them at the same time with a power output of over 2W into 80 ohms. In fact, my T1's have quite a bit more potential for bass even though out the box they have less bass than DT770's, just because the T1's driver can take HUGE amounts of power and can output an incredible amount of volume in the bass area without any distortion, whereas the DT770's can't, or they can, but then they strongly affect the mids, they don't have the resolving power to separate that bass from the mids, even though unlike most closed headphones they don't have a mid-bass bump, but rather a flat mid bass and then a boost below 80 hz. So, great bass for people who like neutral cans but want a bit more punch, but not good for bassheads. In fact, if you want a bassy headphone in that price range ( and good mids, and good smooth highs, and even better soundstage and imaging than DT770) get the Sennheiser HD380 Pro's, because they sound similar to DT770's, but have far more sub bass and can take a much bigger boost. In fact, they're about +10db on 30 hz compared to 100 hz. That means the mid bass is tight and punchy, but they have that sub-woofer like bass, controlled, tight, etc. Another headphone that comes to mind in that range is the Sony MDR-1A, slightly more expensive, but it can take +20 bass boost that starts at 150 hz and slowly peaks at 30 hz...I shit you not, those drivers in those Sony's are indestructible, If I put them on the table with earcups folded flat, so that the plastic part lays on the desk and the earpads look up, the headphones actually rattle on the desk when playing a 40 hz tone, but they don't distort and still sound pristine.

I agree about the bass - it is potent, but has no midbass bump, a rather flat bass response, which is a good thing. And the amount isnt that enormus. It reminds mi very much of the bass of Momentums rev1 over-ear. Sounds almost the same. Same amount, same flat characteristic, same good sub-bass, same feeling that the deeper it goes the more prominent it becomes :). Only difference is that momentums has it even tighter and better controlled, while dt770pro has a bit more overwhelming bass sensasion due to their sheer size. But is is not a basshead headphone, I agree. It is still very beyer-neutral with just a great deep bass responce and not as much of a withdrawn in the midsas others (like dt990)

+KleenexDirty Well, the Beats Solo 2 is actually an excellent headphone for people who want a bassy sound with really good quality sound. I'm not kidding, Solo 2 has NOTHING to do with what most people think about Beats headphones. They're drivers are really high quality, you can EQ them as you wish, they're very detailed, resolving, transparent. In many ways the best sounding closed back on-ear headphone for the money.

Lol have you ever seen the Boondocks take on that? Samuel L Jackson actually does the voice-over again, but it sounds slightly different. In some ways I actually think it's funnier than the original.

+Bilko they're great cans, I'm just extra treble sensitive. Clearly many people love them for good reason. Also depends a lot on what genres you listen to and your preferred sound signature for those genres

Headphones arrived this morning they sound absolutely fantastic!! Very pleased with them mate. Can I pick your brains on a tech question?? I've got my PC linked up to my yamaha AV receiver and my monitor audio speakers, when I use the audio from the HDMI from my PC I noticed that it is not as loud as the audio that comes from my optical out from my PC?? I've checked all the volumes on all the settings on the PC and receiver and everything is normal. Is this simply due to encoding or is it maybe something else??

Just wanted to say thanks. I've been using an M40X for a few years now. The hinge just broke, and while I try to 3D print a replacement I figured I'd order a better set anyway. Hearing an objective "better than" statement after reading through pages of forum semantics was enlightening. I look forward to trying these out.

Thanks, I watched your review on those, but was scared off by some people online complaining about the sub par longevity. Although, I would much prefer to have the removable cable. I anticipate installing a minixlr connector or something similar at some point, because I've never had an audio jack last much longer than a year under daily use.

Was going to get DT-150/250ohm but these are on sale for just over 130 bucks. I love this 80ohm version sound signature, it's got a lively sound signature without being harsh, mid range is superb and really punchy bass. It sure doesn't feel like a close back headphone at all and to top it off, comfort/fitment is supreme.

OK, I found your DT770 review. Your enthusiasm for these cans really shines through here... perhaps these would be a good general listening and guitar playing/tracking headphones, alongside my K240df for mixing and reference listening? I'm thinking I should spend the additional for these and get something solid. Thanks for your thorough and insightful reviews.

unabonger777 These are too inaccurate for mixing and tracking IMO. Too much bass. I have the 250 ohm version now and they're too V shaped to be accurate. These are very good but in terms of sound signature I don't really think they cut it in a more critical environment. The K271 is definitely what you want for guitar tracking if you ask me.

Had to give mine back after a week of use. The treble really was too much for me but the bass was a lot of fun. Getting the a900x now which hopefully gives me a more balanced sound. nice review as always

Was it the 80 ohm? The 80 ohm is much different than the others, quite a bit less treble but I can still see it being bothersome for some people. The 32 and 250 are ridiculous with their treble though

Absolutely good and complete sound cans . I own these for a year now and tested them on different dac/amps and the results were pretty satisfying. First i tried them on the pc onboard audio and they were pretty good but were lacking a bit volume . With the liquid spark and smsl sk10 combo I managed to get the real bass potential from them which is one of their highlights and enough volume. Recently I upgraded to adi2 dac and got even better results with better bass texture and much better and tamed overall picture . I also tried other cans like hd6xx and k271mk2 but didn’t like those as much as I like the dt770 complete sound , they were lacking the bass and the body that the dt770 provided . I’m still trying to find an upgrade for my dt770 if anyone can recommend
