A slightly better guide to changing the cable on a pair of beyerdynamic DT990. The same method would work for the DT770 and DT880.

Hmm. On the one hand I really appreciate this video. On the other, once you have the headphones disassembled, the lighting is so blown out, and the view is so zoomed out, that it's actually quite hard to see what you're talking about. Hope the feedback is helpful.

@@CustomCans Hi. Beyerdynamic offer a 3 m and a 1.6 m version of the straight cable you show in the video. The 3m version has the dt 990 pros included in the list as suitable, whereas only the dt 770 pro 32 Ohm LE are listed as suitable for the 1.6m cable. Is there a an actual difference between the 2 cables or did BD simply forget to do a comprehensive suitability list for the 1.6m? I prefer the 1.6 meter cos I can use extensions if and when I need more reach, but am worried there might be a genuine reason 1.6m won't work properly on my 990 pros. Kind of like the ear pads for the dt 770 pro and the 990 pros aren't the same material and will change the sound if interchanged even though they fit and appear exactly the same... Thanks.

Manage to get a pair of DT 990 Pro Black Edition headphones from a resale shop for $30. it was a return item because the 3.5mm broke on the end, i guess whoever (amazon?) got it returned, thought it wasn't worth keeping in stock, and so they just sold as broken I guess. If you, like me, have an older headset that has different colors on the cables, below might do the trick for you: (If you have a black, white and red cable, black » ground, red = R and white is L If you have a dot on the left side, that is positive like indicated, so you´d have to solder white - red - ground (black cable in my case) of course the safest way is to check the wiring with a multimeter as per indicated.

Custom Cans modded my dt770 about two years back,and made a couple of Litz cables for them. The modding plus the cables adds a huge amount to the way Beyers deliver that music that you know you can't live without. But, watching this,I am amazed that the work can be done for £49!. Its so meticulous. And the result is a fine headphone made even better. I mainly listen to orchestral music :there's usually 60-100 people playing and say 10-15 strands (threads) of sound going on. So,there's a lot to mess up,to obscure,to lose. And the custom Cans modding and Litz cables simply deliver more of what's in the recording and it's a lot more authentic. Revelatory. I'm sending in my 880's to get them fitted with a 4pin mini XLR in the new year. I don't get why CC don't have a lot more UK customers. So,all you RNCM,Chethams,Manchester uni music proffs/students....wake up and smell the coffee : Beyer don't make toys and CC do make Beyers deliver more,and better.

Hey I took the courage and replaced my broken headband cable and the regular cable aswell as it was starting to break at the reinforced point aswell. First I had alot of troubles where only one side worked but then I figured out that supposedly the 2 middle cables of the main ear cup have to be soldered in one connection. After that the headset worked on both sides but this time it was quite noticably louder on the left ear and quieter on the right ear. I dont know what the issue could be, probably another bad or wrong soulder I suppose? Its late now so I will probably try it again tomorrow but since I stopped trying for today I figured I could ask you since youre the pro. What else could be my issue or my fail? Did you ever encounter behaviour like this and if so what was the fix? Thanks alot for these very easy and informative videos about the beyerdynamic universe. Gave me the courage to DIY :D
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 10 ай бұрын
Without seeing what yo have done, it is tricky to tell what the issue is but it is normally useful to draw the circuit out on paper to get it clear in you head. The outer solder pads are + and - and the centre ones are not connected to the deiver - they are just used to join cables together. Draw the circuit you have out and make sure both sides have a connection to the appropriate positive wire and they both connect to the shared ground. Make sure that the positive and negative wires do not join together.

Hey - thanks for the vid. I just fixed my DT990 Pros 250Ohm - replacing the old and broken left driver with a new one from Beyerdynamic - and it worked all out but I feel like the frequency response is quite off. Bass seems very loud, while mids and highs seem like missing a bit. The overall volume is super high - higher than on my other 250Ohm headphones. I referenced the repaired 990 to my 770 and - both 250Ohm - and they are louder and seem to have more bass. Did something like this ever occur to you? Thanks in advance.

The soldering would be easier though as you would only need to solder 2 wires to each driver. The drilling of the hole is the scary part

If you have a digital multimeter you could put one probe on each of the outer contacts and see if you get roughly the same reading as the impedance of your headphones. Have it set to read ohms and if you have an 80ohm pair it should read close to 80 if you get no reading then it is probably a dead driver. If you get a very low reading, you have bridged a connection somewhere

Yes... The left and right share the same ground so solder the ground wire for the headband cable to the negative terminal in the left driver along with the ground wire from the cable. Then attach the left positive from the cable to the positive terminal on the left driver. Finally join the positive side of the headband cable to the right positive from the cable and then cover the join in electrical tape or shrink tube

Hi custom cans, I cant afford to send these in for a repair so I have ran a continuity test with a fluke voltage tester. The reading gave continuity beeps when testing ground and all the other configurations they are all just on with beep. The positive the right or left they all just beeped with each other in every combination of tests I had one part of metre on the different jack parts as shown in video and the other checking each solder point. My best guess is this means the cable has broke inside the flex part and all wires are just shorting out each other with contact? I was told it was likely a driver failure but I feel its likely the cable. I will now put the driver and headphones in front of my de humidifier to further dry it out.... What do you think this means? Please advise many thanks.
@ukguitaryogi2888
@ukguitaryogi2888 2 жыл бұрын
I just tested a brand new guitar cable and it does not beep on any configuration of testing continuity only when it should beep as no damage... unless I got some theory in the wiring wrong It looks like a major broken cable inside and all are shorting in weird and wonderful ways in the left ear. The volume is 25% and no bass in left ear. if this helps.. I was advised the driver has likely failed. Thanks

Hi, continuity can be a bit unreliable on headphones as the wires are all joined through the voice coils on the drivers unless you unsolder the cable first. You can use your meter to check how many ohms you are getting instead - between R+ and ground and between L+ and ground - you should read roughly whatever the impedance of your headphones should be. If you measure a very low resistance then you have a short somewhere internally and a cable replacement should fix it. Jason

@@CustomCans thanks mate for the response, I did measure impedance also on my multi metre, from one of the earphones it gave 255ohms which is in tolerance but I am sure I had a reading also of 1.5ohms and it was gradually dropping on the metre as I held it.... I suppose that explains why I get no bass to the left if that short is there... may have to order a cable from you. ! thanks

@CustomCans

There is hope but not much... If the voice coil wires are still attached you can glue them back into place, if the voice coil wire is broken, there may be enough length left to re-attach it to the base of the lug. If not then it is probably not saveable

Yes - it sounds like you wired something wrong or bridged some connections. I would probably look at your wiring and draw the circuit diagram. Make sure that each side has a connection to the ground and to the correct positive wire and that the positive is not joined to the ground without going through a driver. You could use a multimeter to measure the resistance of various parts to find out where you went wrong. If it is all wired correctly and the resistance of the left and right driver are measuring about the same then you probably have one driver wired backwards

If the metal stakes mentioned at 6:24 do indeed come off is the driver just dead or is there a way to save it? For a bit more detail. The left and the middle stake (so for ground and right connection) came off while the right one (for left ear) didnt. I put them back in place but after connecting everything back up the right ear cup works the left one where the stakes were removed and reinserted dont work anymore. Is my assumption that the voice coil wire broke and i need to replace the speaker correct? Is there a way to save the driver?
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 3 жыл бұрын
The middle one does not matter as that is just there to join the right cable but the left one will have been connected to the voice coil wire - if you are lucky it will be fixable - if you look at the one that stayed attached.... there is a super thin wire attached to the bottom of it underneath. That ill have snapped off on the one that came away and if there is enough length left attached to the driver you will be able to solder it back on or use a short piece of wire to make a bridge to it

Found my way here as I cannot find a single adapter or extension cable for the DT990's that work. Every one, no matter how expensive, only gives right speaker. Fine into the amp, fine into the PC, but add any one of 20 adapters or 5 extenders, and no left audio. Really regretting buying these. Tried pushing harder but it's as solid as possible and still only right can audio.
