Super helpful. Thanks. Just listened to 990 and 1990 and I also heard a clear difference. At first both sounds kinda “neutral” and seems worse than other these price models from another companies. But then, I calm down and starting noticing details, and colors, and deep. And overall just want to listen and listen. If you are choosing between 990 and 1990 - it’s like 1080p and 4k.

It would be awesome to hear the thinking behind what you have done and also see the plots side by side. I am particularly interested in the DT1990 Mass Loading and Damping and the 8K filter but the 990 Mass loading vs 900 Pro interests me too. I look forward to the next one!

Apreciate your review, I only tried the closed back versions of the 900x and the 990, and I tottaly agree with your description. Thanks for making the test with and without the foams, great info. I would say that from a lover of electronic music, the bass definition, separation and punch its far more superior in the 900x drivers, in cost of that weird very low peak, but somehow the Highs are not so harsh but far more defined. I wonder how really sounds the DT1990, if they are really superior, I really have to try it

The DT1990 are just awesome with the analytical pads. Upgraded from the DT880 250ohm. I do not regret making the purchase. The DT1990s sound better in every way. The thing I love about Beyerdynamic headphones is how repairable they make them. You can pretty much replace any part that breaks quite easily. They went a step further by making the drivers removable without needing to get out a soldering iron. While soldering isn't that difficult (takes a bit of practice if you've never done it before), it's just nice to see a manufacturer making it easy to replace something rather than making it harder. My only real concern with Beyerdymamic headphones is hair. Hair seems to be an issue. Hair can make its way onto the driver which can cause an annoying rattle on bass frequencies. This can either be an easy fix (if the hair is managing to touch the driver diaphragm by poking through the paper baffle) or a harder one (hair is on the diaphragm itself, requiring you to actually remove the driver from the paper baffle housing). It happened to my DT880s after several years (hair got on the diaphragm) and also happened to my DT1990s after several months of use (luckily the problematic hair was just poking the driver through the paper baffle and could easily be removed). Not sure if this is an issue on other headphones, but it seems to be an issue on Beyerdynamic headphones. That said, I don't think I'll be upgrading from the 1990s any time soon. These headphones just do everything well.
@CustomCans
@CustomCans Жыл бұрын
Yes - I can confirm, the hair thing is odd - we have had quite a few over the years witht that problem. I am not sure whether that opaper they use to cover the driver is to blame or whethet the people that like beyers have sturdier hair ;)

I would also be interested in the DT 1990 (I also have the DT880 Edition and am very satisfied with it) but I have to honestly admit that the significantly higher clamping force of the 1990 (N 6.6) compared to the 880 (N 2.8) puts me off. If only there was at least a 1990 Edition with a clamping force equal to the Amiron Home of N 4.0. But N 6.6...no way for me.

I'm into mastering and got the 1990's last week to compare to the HD650 which I used for 2 years on a Topping L50 amp. The headband of the 1990 was better for longer sessions imho. I had to do some EQ adjustments for my preferred sound, as I did with the HD650, after which I concluded it was easier to reach my goal with the 1990, using less EQ (tiny boost lows, notch 8 khz) and gain more details. The difference was small but I did find the transients easier to hear (including setting the important limiter threshold before introducing audible distortion). Sold the HD650 easily, I'm happy with my choice and enjoy work even more.

Very interesting and helpful review of the various Beyerdynamic headphones. I have been using a pair of 990 Pro Limited Editions for a number of years primarily for home studio recording and mixing use but noticed recently that the plastic pieces just below the headband have cracked and on one side a chunk has actually broken off so was thinking of investing in a new pair and have been seriously considering the 900 ProX but after your review I'm now not so sure particularly when you mentioned that you could do a modification to a pair of 990 s to improve the bass response and tame the highs a little. I had fun with Beyer line up on my own and yea, 1990 is the best option out of this, most natural and balanced. What interest me is how is frequency looking for T1 without the foam. They are insanely capable cans but the tuning is yea... kinda off. They are 32 ohms but they do need power. If you adjust volume so the quietest points are loud enough all remaining and elevated frequency brings up the presence and experience that you might never felt with headphones. They are good, but their problem is: part of your library will sound heavenly, some like a worst trash you can imagine. Great content, waiting for close backs rumble as of all of Beyer headphones i left only one: T5p 2gen. 3rd is good as well ;)

@@CustomCans Yes there is more highs presence. I tested them without the foam and was really confused if i like it or not. There is some opinions that people actually like them more like that. Nonetheless if you are able to mod them i truly believe they have extraordinary capabilities (technicalities, spaciousness, imagining, low end delivery). Modding and retuning from the scratch - That would be a great content to follow. I would do that by myself or i will if i get some good deal on 2nd hand unit. Cannot justify 1000€ purchase that need modding.

@@CustomCansAbsolutely, my Friend. 🙂 However, I wish to see the difference between 1990 and Hifiman Ananda's, which I sold last weekend. Ananda's sound was the best I heard so far for music listening. For competitive FPS games, it was not that good as 900 PRO X, might be because I was too skeptical with their sound in games and how they sat on my head. They are gigantic compared to 900😊 However its hard to compare dynamic and planars headphones, I think. I might be wrong, I'm just amateur enjoyer who loves your channel.❤

@@CrafteG Hows the 1990's ? I currently owned 770, 990, and Edition XS so we are on a similar path here. I have plenty of amp in my Magni/Modi and consider selling XS for 900 pro x or 1990's. I really find myself switching back to 990 for comfort alone. The sound quality of XS is supreme but honestly overkill for most of the time. I prefer 990 for most media except pure music enjoyment or serious gaming -- the XS are amazing.

Hey! I got mine 1990 last Saturday and I enjoy them. I found them more comfortable than 900 PRO X and better soundwise. I can sit in 1990 for about 5-7 hours with take them off only once I need to get to the restroom or make cup of coffee. 1990 high peak was noticeable for the first day and day after, I just got used to it and found it very good in competitive FPS games as you hear shots very well from the far. I had only ifi Zen Dac V2, and it could not provide enough juice for 1990 as it 250 - Ohm, so I got ifi Zen Can and now use them in stack and very happy with the sound. In terms of comparison vs Hifiman Ananda, Stealth magnets - music soundwise Ananda is better to me. I think Planars will be all the time better vs Dynamic drivers. It's just my personal subjective opinion. Im not an expert. 1990 is not bad in terms of music - it's just neutral sound like monitors, with wide space for EQ if required. Which I found very good to me. In terms of gaming and comfort - 1990 way better for me. Ananda's was massive and bulky on my head, not comfortable for sure. Also, I used to try XS, they sits even worse than Ananda's. Long story short - 1990 is the best for me so far. I love their sound, build, and comfort, and I don't want to look for anything else anymore. Hope this helps, just remember the choice is always yours.

I had a pair of the DT900's for a while when they first came out and found them a bit dull and lacking in clarity...but not just in the high end. I tried removing the foam and thought they sounded terrible. A lot more high frequencies but very course sounding and lo-fi. Whereas the 990's and TYGR's I found have a more pronounced top end, but somehow not course....just quite a lot of it! I've rotated around 20 or so pairs of headphones over last few years but keep coming back to the 990's (250ohm) as I find that stuff played through them sounds very 'real' (good timbre might be the expression?), but am very tempted by the 1990's, which I have yet to try.

The DT 1990's are my favorite headphones. But I have had 5 pairs (2 DT 1770's and 3 DT 1990's) with distorting drivers now. They have varied in intensity between the headphones and also they come and go. On one pair of my DT1770 I could made them appear by looking downwards with them on my head or moving my head back and forth. The driver would pop followed by distortion and the sound would get lower compared to the other driver, to then just "pop" into place and sound clean again, like nothing happened. (Same thing happened with 3 different cables and 2 different amps + 2 motherboard soundcards. So definitely the drivers distorting) On the DT 1990's, the distortions have been more subtle, but because they were so apparent in my DT 1770's, I noticed that it was the driver that distorted instead of just some distortion in the song, which they could be mistaken for, especially since they come and go, seemingly randomly. And often arent too noticeable. If you read online, there seems to be people talking about these same distortions with these headphones ever since they were released, so it definitely seems to be some manufacturing defect on the Tesla 2.0 drivers that they haven't sorted out. I made a thread on Reddit too and told people to try a tone generator on their DT 1990's to see if they could notice the same distortions, and had a couple of people reporting that they had. Question is what do I do, what would you do? I just can't find another pair that fits me and sounds as good as the DT 1990's. I have been trying to make Beyerdynamic aware of this but they just told me to send them in and buy new ones, so it doesn't seem like they would try to do anything about it, or even consider that there could be something wrong with the design. I guess it would suck to re-design the whole driver. Or people are just not noticing details like I do, OR I had the worst luck ever, which isn't the case because people have talked about this for so long. If you want to have an example, look at the DT 1770's 1-star reviews on Amazon for example, tons of people reporting the same problem, since the release of the 1770/1990.

It could be a hair poking through the foam and touching the driver - we have seen it a few times. Pulling them apart, and blowing out any hairs that have got inside often fixes it
@Terra101
@Terra101 Жыл бұрын
@@CustomCans On at least 2 of my pairs these distortions were directly from the box, literally unboxing and going to the tone generator to make sure I got a good pair. And they were all 100% brand new. On the other ones the problems appeared within a week or so. There's quite a lot of foam and paper for a hair to penetrate before reaching the driver. What do you mean by pulling them apart? Pulling apart the driver itself? Also these distortions can often change/disappear temporarily if you tap the cup/take out the driver and re-insert it. So doing that and blowing clean the cup doesn't have to mean that there was actually something loose/hair inside. I have been analyzing these distortions for years because the headphones are so good otherwise, I just want them to work. I'm certain it's a driver problem. Similar problems have been talked about since the release of these headphones, and also Beyerdynamic even did a recall on these because of driver problems early in production. Never had any similar problems with my other Beyers, (770,880,990. 700/900) only the DT 1770/1990. I last heard about it just a couple of days ago on the Headphones sub-reddit about a guy with the exact same problem on his brand new DT 1770, for example. He said he heard some distortions in a couple of tracks but couldn't reproduce it. I told him to use the tone generator around 10-300hz, because that's where I usually find them, and he immediately localized it on 40 and 300hz. Also I did a new thread on this a while ago and asked redditors to try the tone generator with their 1770/1990, there were a couple of people that found their drivers distorting which they didn't noticed before. But also so many people that gets defensive, because Beyerdynamic has been making headphones for so long and they would never do anything wrong, and my headphones are so expensive and feel so premium, of course there would not be anything wrong with the driver. It's really sad because that just keeps Beyerdynamic from actually fixing this flaw. Sometimes I wonder if it's part of planned obsolesence. I wouldn't be pushing this thing if I wasn't 100% sure it's a driver defect. I just hope Beyerdynamic will do something about it so that I can buy and enjoy my endgame headphones without the headache of trying to convince people something's wrong. But in order to do that, people will have to stop defending Beyerdynamic just because they have a good reputation.

I have the fatter foam tuning disc from the Amiron in my DT1990 (I think it's the same disc as in the Tyger), it seems to turn them into less of a studio, more of a home audio headphone. I'm also using the Dekoni elite velour pads, they are really comfy, but I don't think they sound quite as good as the stock pads.

@Fred no, you mean using it instead of the foam disc? What I have tried in one of my DT770s is coffee filter paper, it is a similar consistency to the material that beyerdynamic already use to protect the driver and it doesn't do anything too screwy to the sound, not that different to the stock foam. There is a KZfaq video of a guy trying various materials with a Tygr, he liked the coffee filter because it tamed the treble, but I don't find the DT770 bright anyway. I'm going to try it on the DT1990. I think it's safer to use than toilet paper, it's lint free and harder to tear.

toilet paper under the foam. Please let me know how you get on with the coffee filter paper; haven't tried that one yet. I don't find the 770 too bright, but the 1990 can be sometimes. its tricky because there is a lot of overlap between upper harmonics & lower end of cymbals. i'll look out for the vid you recommended ✌😎👍

I recently tested some 990 non pro 600 ohm's and their completely different than the 990 pro lots of base maybe even more than the 1990 pro also less noise isolation than the 1990 pro noise isolation similar to the 990 pro. I was interested is taking the 990 600 ohm drivers and sticking them in a pro housing. I'm surprised they dont just make a pro 600 ohm. The 900 non pros dont seem to have as much as a treble peak either which is one of the things I like about them.

@fifa14623 Yes but you should also know that the build quality is not as good. They also have a non coiled cable and non detachable cable... You could put the drivers in the pro housing or at least do a cable mod on the 990 non pro.

@@KZfaqDoxedMyRealName In my opinion the 990 Premium edition 600ohm have more bass than the 990 Pro and they are much more comfortable. The 990 Premium Edition is one of the most comfortable headphones I've ever had, and the clamp force is nothing like the pro version. I love my 990 Premium 600ohm and 880 600ohm with Dekoni Choice Suede pads.

Hello i have a question... I have a pair of AK T1P they Seem Rare Cant find any real reviews on them 32o tesla driver if anyone has any information on what you think is better for Music/gaming the DT1990 or the AK T1P These were given to me by my Father.

It would probably be down to personal taste. We have had a few pairs of those in to have the cables replaced and they do sound nice but I have not compared them directly to the 1990. The 1990 is more of a studio headphone and the T1P is tuned for audiophiles

For sound only, I prefer the Grado sr80e to the DT990. The FR is still kind of the same.

Yeh the SR80 also punch way above their weight - we will have to do a mod video on those at some point

I have T1 V2 and DT 1990, DT 990 Pro 250Ohm. I say... DT 990 is the best... T1 is too relaxed and too wide... detail is lost. DT 1990 sound like upgraded DT 880 and are great for mixing but games are just heaven on DT 990. I would like bass and mids from T1 V2 tremble from DT 1990 and soundstage, clarity from DT 990 that would be perfect Beyer headphone. Build quality is the best on DT 1990 but to be honest... DT 990 is more fun. My personal fav is DT 990 but build quality is amazing on DT 1990 they are build like a luxury tank.
