Beyond Books: A Look Into What Public Libraries Really Are | Tara Franzetti | TEDxYouth@RVA

Librarians do more than just sort books. In this talk, Tara Franzetti shares about how her duties as a public librarian are busier than ever, as public libraries are more vibrant than ever. Tara also shares how libraries are not outdated, and that young people are the most common users of public libraries, more than any other age group.
Tara Franzetti has been working in libraries since 2002 and is currently a branch manager at the Richmond Public Library. Her favorite things, besides libraries, are tofu from Ipanema Cafe, Disney World, punk rock, and chocolate. She and her husband Paul relocated to Richmond from Northern NJ five years ago and live in Bon Air with their toddler son, Patrick. In antiquity, that Alexandria (Egypt) library, for instance, was a huge "third space" hub or mecca, inspired by all those documented facts and ideas... With cyber and internet "content," we seem to be relegating books, libraries to sources of data, information. But books, scrolls and such, are so much more, whether books are collected, brought together for free reading, or for their selling. Fiction writer Brian Lee Durfee (on his KZfaq channel) discusses the importance of book covers, -book cover art, maps (style), diagrams etc., even the paper itself and the font, as part of the "experience" of books. With a book there is both a holism and synergy of nuances, mostly sensory of course, but help deliver more then sensory, and mere data or information. Books are an experience beyond that. Each one making its singular impression.
