Making boxes is fun and easy, and if you make one a little larger it called a Footlocker or Boot Locker and it is one of the most fun projects I have made in years, I used Pine for the main box and laminated Cherry Plywood for the top and made is small enough to easily pack around but large enough to hold items, often of value, that many people might get attached to like Baseball or Basketball Cards, Books, Pictures, Clothes, Jewelry and even Collectables and Family Heirloom items, and so many ways to make a mini trunk like this like Box Joint or Dovetail Joinery, Butt Joints of Dowels, and how to decorate the Footlocker, hand painted pictures, laser etchings, carved designs, CNC cut designs ... list is endless, and these wooden boxes will last forever unlike plastic totes that become brittle, crack and break over the years, this wooden footlocker will last a lifetime ...

I like wooden boxes. They don't have the curved corners and handle recesses that make plastic totes so unusable. And you can stack them and they won't crush. You can make them any size you choose. You can make them utilitarian, or make them works of art. Wish hardware wasn't getting so expensive, and some of it is so cheaply made these days. I would like to make some similar to the one you show, but with a lip where the lid closes. That way, they could be used for camping, and if they were in the bed of a pickup and I drive through a rainstorm, I will find my gear dry when I go to set up camp.

I made a version of this when our daughter was a child. I fastened 19x19mm posts in each corner, then made an internal tray which sat on the 4 posts. I did this so I could rotate her toys through the box. When she was getting bored with some toys I would put them in the bottom of the box & brought some from the bottom and put them in the tray soshe felt (a bit) like she was getting new toys occasionally.

You should have mentioned you used a edge-glued panel from a big box store for the sides. Someone thinking they can do this with one board will have a pile of warped fire wood in a year. Hopefully the edge-glued panels have the end grain arches/growth rings alternated

We (in Israel) generally get pine from Finland and it is about 1/4 the cost of maple.
@twauster
@twauster 11 ай бұрын
The difference is even bigger in Scandinavia. Hardwoods are ridiculously expensive here, if you can get it at all. The only native hardwood here is birch, but that's also super expensive as rough cut. So we use pine, pine and pine. And MDF :)

It seems the side panels are glued from smaller boards with finger joints. What are the advantages and disadvantages compared to a solid 1x12 board, assuming you can find one straight enough? Are there directions it's less strong?
@jeffbaker8808
@jeffbaker8808 11 ай бұрын
A 1x12 may warp or cup, especially if cut from near the centre of the tree.
@twauster
@twauster 11 ай бұрын
Not sure if that's what Mr Knecht uses here, but finger jointed glued pine boards ("hobby boards", "shelf boards") are very versatile and very stable with regard to warping/twisting. I have made shelves and boxes out of them a few times. They can become ever so slightly "wavy" (individual strips can cup a tiny bit) if the board is stored for a long time, but nothing glue and clamps won't take care of come build time. In my opinion, the biggest upside to using these ready made boards are they come planed and joined (not always squared though) and require very little sanding.
@knecht105

Yes, this was finger jointed undersized (inexpensive) pine boards often sold as "shelving"

@@knecht105 well I thought it was a great idea, but the opening on the mustard bottle I used was a bit small, it had a very slow flow kept clogging up, then I kicked it up a notch Lol … I purchased the plastic set for mustard and ketchup at the Dollar Store, I use the yellow for indoor only glue and the red for the waterproof glue, they work like a charm 👍😃
