"Beyond Noh" rhythmically animates 3,475 individual masks from all over the world, beginning with the distinctive masks of the Japanese Noh theater and continuing on a cultural journey through ritual, utility, deviance, and politics.

Director Bio:
Patrick Smith is known for his metaphorical hand drawn short films, as well as his experimental stop motion films. His formative years were spent as a storyboard artist for Walt Disney, and animation director for MTV. Smith is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the New York Foundation of the Arts.

Oh wow! This is similar to your other short "2400 Boards in 2 Minutes"/"Board Shop" ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9uja7B72NWqqWw.html ), I liked that one! Excited for the release.

@@PatrickSmithAnimation Oh, are they in the works or did I miss the uploads? Also, why is this one going to be called "Beyond Noh" and not "Mask Shop" or something, seeing how your other ones all have 'Shop' at the end?

@@IgnatRemizov yeah, this goes further than the shop films.. it's longer, and I def put in more time. it's called "Beyond Noh" because the film starts with Noh Theatre masks, and then continues a tour of every mask from every culture of the world.

But tbh why is a white guy directing this film which starts off with Japanese masks? Why start with Noh masks? Looks kind of like an Asian fetishistic obsession with Japanese women/culture, the rest of the masks from other cultures or subcultures can hold equal importance. It would be interesting how this film would read had he started with a different kind of mask. What it starts with can really change the viewing experience for the rest of the film.
