I recommended this audiobook to someone here online despairing about life and religion. I really hope n pray that it is helping him to see the grand picture of True Religion with its minuscule detail. This is a very important book by C S LEWIS.

Chapter 1. Begetting and making Experience God in nature like a beach at sea vs looking at a map with that sea on it. Sure the sea is real while you’re there, but the map is necessary for getting anywhere like to America. Theology is like the map versus meeting God in the desert which is real and exciting but lacking, it leads nowhere. It’s all thrills and no work. You won’t find eternal life without learning about God and doing the work. Watch out for bad, old false ideas of a God. So go to the source first, the words of Christ in the Bible. My Notes for first few minutes...

I was lucky enough to see all different, a person unable to do the works, to read the gospel, to serve...a total lost case BUT God came gently, knock in his door, the person rejected, he was unable to let Jesus entered, Jesus entered slowed and untied the hands of that person. Right there I understood grace in another level, Jesus will meet you where you are, no matter how much you reject him, church, Jesus...Jesus will knock, if you can't open He will come in..He will do whatever necessary to restore a soul. I saw in a period of 2 years, in the end, my friend died with cancer, but he was a new man by grace! God's love has no boundaries. I experience it!

What is he talking about "natural self"? Does he mean the body? If so the body is going to die anyway, so why is 'god' *apparently* going to so much effort to 'kill the natural self'? It's going to happen sooner or later without *"gods effort"* so to speak... I'm so confused now. :s

We live inside a human body with needs and wants, which Lewis call the "natural self". At birth our "natural self" is doomed to damnation as we are born into sin, Romans 3:23. Meaning from birth our "natural self" want to sin, and this sin separates us from God. For this reason we humans are in need of saving, and after we accepted Christ's gift of saving us from the damnation of sin, our nature is changed . . . we are born again, John3:3. Thus we have a new, young and immature nature just after Christ saved us, after we have been born again. From then God's spirit live inside of us. As a human we have the habits of "natural self" which we have been doing our living years up to becoming born again which we no longer want to do, since our born again nature want to please God's spirit, Romans 7:15. Then with the help of God's spirit we kill the "natural self" every day by not choosing the needs and wants of the sinful human, but choosing what God's spirit want, Romans 8:3-14.

Man is born with original sin and, therefore, is inclined toward evil thoughts and evil behavior. Look around at the world. That’s the ‘natural-self.’ Jesus wants it replaced with the virtues he taught including His Sermon on the Mount. It also includes the 10 Commandments. We also learn the ways of God, of Christ, throughout the New Testament. Read the parable of The Good Samaritan and The Prodigal Son. Read Christ’s words at the final judgment where He separates the goats and the sheep and exercises His Mercy and His Justice.
