Actors John Saxon, Joe Dallesandro and Leonard Mann were exposed to live ammunition on film sets, sometimes by Italian filmmakers, sometimes by fellow Americans like Harvey Keitel. Tough-guy film expert Mike Malloy presents three outtakes from his 2012 documentary, EUROCRIME! THE ITALIAN COP AND GANGSTER FILMS THAT RULED THE '70s.

Grazie! I had used longer versions of all three stories in a rough-cut version of the Stunts/Violence sequence. But then I ended up only keeping Saxon at a substantial length in the finished doc....

And it was at a high point in his career too -- costarring with all the biggest names: Clint Eastwood the year before, Bruce Lee that same year. I guess he was a real team player...

Just to add my 2 cents, people have been killed and wounded with the use of blanks on film sets. You'd think with all the use of SFX today no ammo would need to be used period.

Quite the coincidence, but Arizona Ghostriders put up a video nine days ago on the same topic (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iL2fgJOeuM7doX0.html). They mentioned how the use of live ammo in water cooled machine gun in "The Public Enemy" nearly got Jimmy Cagney killed and partly led to his involvement in creating the Screen Actors Guild. I added the following comment on their site. I forget which actor told this story, but he said he was filming a movie in Europe about 50 years ago and the scene called for him and his leading lady to cross a river while being shot at. Imagine his shock when bullets started splashing the water around them. The French director was firing a pistol loaded with live ammo to add realism to the scene. In the 1931movie "Little Caesar" an actor was paid to run ahead of a Thompson submachine gun being fired right behind him with live ammo. Supposedly, "Birth of a Nation" (1915) used real cannon and cannon balls in the battle scenes. On more than one occasion an actor or extra was accidentally killed when live ammo was used in a movie scene because of this cavalier attitude. Ah, the good old days.

Ah, grazie for the lead on the related video. Will go check that out. Thanks also for the examples on the U.S. side of things; you have to go back more decades for those than with the Italians!

@@Paladin1873 -- And because Italian cinema was cranked out a furious pace (owing to little TV at the time), shooting live rounds could be a time-saving measure, as with the John Saxon anecdote. Btw, if you feel so moved, feel free to mention this vid in the comments of the Arizona Ghostriders video. Grazie!

A regular collaborator named Eric Zaldivar is writing/directing that doc, so he largely controls the pace of work. I'm helping to produce the project, as is a guy named John Dunn. We've gotten some nice movie-star interviews in the can in the last few months. Thanks for your interest...

Wellllll .... am I supposed to let these outtakes vanish, lost to posterity, when that hard drive inevitably dies? And if not, am I allowed to place them in a contemporary context? (Methinks you would've made a dubious historian.) But the most hurtful thing you said was calling me a KZfaqr.
