I dont know if you actually care about region boundaries in Starfield, but different planets/moons have differents sizes. Ive found one moon so small you could land on one landing point with abandoned facility nearby, then land not very close to it relatively and still be able to see the exact facility from the first landing point and even reach it. I wonder if the generated areas actually "wrap" the planet properly, or if there are weirdnesses like with map projections. I bet it's the latter. EVERY engine struggles with this . however they do special tricks to prevent you from noticing. like moving the entire world around you instead of moving you in the world which prevents having to calculate all of those massive numbers for physics and graphics. in CSGO and halflife they do the 3D sky box thing to fix it.

Bethesda is about 1/5 the size of a modern AAA game dev, they also have one of the longest retention rates in an industry notorious for quick turnover. Most of their employees have been around since Morrowind, Oblivion, and many of the Daggerfall devs still work there. By all measures it's a good place to work and the devs do good work, and have a pretty much bottomless bank account but they're still small. The fact that they made this game with a team of their size is a wonder.

As a Day 1 No Man's Sky player, who played the game pretty regularly during years 1-4, I can say that this is some astounding news. Hopefully Bethesda, like Hello Games did (not holding my breath), can improve upon the existing system and make it so much better. NMS did not allow you to fly close to the ground in year 1. By Year 2 you could fly through the mountains and crash if you wanted to, and vehicles were added. This video, shows that the pixels are connected, hopefully on every world, so being able to travel around the planet if you want should be possible.... with some programming imagination. The potential is there! This gives me so much hope for more in this game.

This video takes me back to jumping out of the boundaries of the painting world on Oblivion on my PS3. I jumped from the maps edge into nothingness and began swimming through the air till I reached ground. It was snowing but I could see a mountain in the distance. I ran for close to an hour as the mountain's shape got larger and I clipped through LOD terrain that varied in height. It felt like I was running across the surface of the games disc and would eventually reach another region of the game's overworld. Alas, I had to go for dinner and by the time I returned my passion for answers had fizzled out.

My hypothesis for the invisible barriers is that it's also due to the "hairy ball," theorem. Their engine could only handle loading square tiles, so they couldn't handle a player traveling vertically from pole to pole without a serious overhaul, and therefore just disabled it. Much easier to remap the players landing zone from spherical to Cartesian coordinates than it would be to handle things like 3D collision bounds and terrain data in non-euclidean space.

It's not actually more work to do it this way though. All such types of procedural generation are deterministic, so as long as you pass in the same starting parameters (seed) you get the same result. For a planet in Starfield you assume the seed is the coordinate you land on, and thus you'll always get a consistent and deterministic planet surface back whether you land in the same spot over and over or in neighboring spots.

Would be cool if they made a loading screen of some kind when you're on the verge of crossing to another region in which it unloads the old region and loads the new one if it cannot be seamless, rather than just closing it off.. The reason why the game crashes when you go too much beyond the invisible boundary is because the more you go further away from your ship, the more terrain data the game loads that is in front of the player, and unloads the terrain data which is behind the player. A time comes when the player just moves too far away from his/her ship, that the player ship itself gets unloaded with the terrain data, hence the game crash. There are 2 ways to solve this issue. Either we somehow prevent the ship from getting unloaded with the terrain data, when the player move to far away from the ship. Or make a script where we can call the ship to the players current position, so the ship always stays in the vicinity of the player, hence the game doesn't crash during extended planetary exploration.

@@2kliksphilip yes, I'm pretty confident about it. Go to the Starfield nexus mod page of "Remove Planetary Tile Boundary" and check out the post section. In there, a lot of modders ran experiments and shared their findings regarding this topic/issue and discovered why the game crashes when you go too far beyond the invisible boundary.

A shame the rest of the game is still trash, had a storm on a planet that didn't looked great. The game itself also doesn't look that next gen yet gave me 60 FPS on a 4090 during said storm despite it not being that heavy on effects. Mirrors dont even have reflections, basic tech is missing that we had over 10 years ago. They couldn't even be bothered to make a map for the cities or areas you're in so you just follow arrow after arrow. No roleplay left in this one You cant even swimm underwater...

I'm not sure it's because of the hairy ball theorem, but rather that there is no homeomorphism from the plane to the sphere, because the sphere is compact and the plane is not (homeomorphisms preserve "compactness"). The hairy ball theorem is more for stuff dealing with a plane of vectors.
@xHF01x
@xHF01x 8 ай бұрын
The problem here is not compactness, as the map is hopefully finite in size (i.e. it's bounded, and we might as well assume it's a closed subset of the plane). The problem is that the map is flat (i.e. has zero curvature), but it's trying to be a map of a globe (which has positive curvature). But by the Theorema Egregium, (Gaussian) curvature is preserved under local isometries -- so such a map cannot be a local isometry, i.e. it must warp distances.

I love the fact that the worlds look realistic and have multiple biomes with proper transitions in world generation. Also some creatures can survive on multiple biomes and some cannot. I think they made a great base in terms of world generation that could be expanded by modders.

It feels like they’re so close, but where they’ve stopped short has such a massive impact. It’s not about the ability to walk around a planet over the course of a month. It’s about not being able to get in your ship and fly over to a cool landmark in 30 seconds, or boost from a planet to its nearby moon. The segmentation just makes my ship not feel real, the planets don’t feel real. The seamlessness is so integral to an experience that’s supposed to be about exploration
@charlespockert8948

Yeah but to be fair, no amount of improved technical execution is going to make the story or characters any good. Even if the ai was perfect, the area transitions were streamed/seamless and the animation wasn't janky af, the game would still be ass.

@@charlespockert8948 I haven’t gotten far in the main quest, so far is seems just as serviceable as the previous games. Idk what you want the ship to feel like exactly, it works like any other spaceship in any other game. The power allocation and advanced targeting add a bit of extra interest. Writing is fine, nothing to write home about. I already expressed my issue with the segmentation, which leads to all the fast travelling idk why you’re bringing it up as a point against me. The environments, specifically the procedural planet surfaces not the hand made stuff, are as barren as they should be. Again, the problem is the content is hundreds of metres apart and you just have to hold w for a couple minutes to get between them, if you could hop in your ship and zoom there in a few seconds it would be fine. Then the surface could just do its real job of being resource gathering zones where you scan stuff to see what you can harvest then build a little outpost to do it, a gameplay loop I enjoy.

@b4ttlemast0r 7 ай бұрын
Knowing that they actually can accurately generate any spot on the map, it's a real bummer that they don't let you travel across the whole planet. The only reason you can't is probably because of engine limitations, it seems like the engine still can't dynamically load and unload areas, since they also still need to have loading screens when entering a building, so they can only load part of the planet surface at a time. It's unfortunate because they were so close to actually being able to explore the planet surface, and they could have implemented vehicles or the ability to fly your ship on the planet to traverse the distances, and probably generate more actually interesting stuff like settlements along the way, but this ancient engine kept them from realising the vision. This game has so much unused potential.

Modders will. The limitations are almost certainly in place due to console limitations, as always. Cities in skyrim had loading screens but opencities proved that to be entirely unnecessary. If the regions connect, modders will enable you to run around them seamlessly. When that happens, I hope other modders will make mods for that version of the game. The true version of the game.
