What exactly is "futuristic"? And how exactly has making props and toys and playing dress up taken you ANY closer to the actual technology you claim to have such an interest in? And how is steam "dry mechanics"? It's literally water vapor and conversion of water to steam in the boiler and condensation back to water in a condensor or return piping. Go work around ACTUAL STEAM EQUIPMENT and you'll probably find its a long way from "dry" working around steam. I've done a little research into steampunk and I've been watching some videos. And when I first heard about it and Googled it I was initially excited thinking steampunk claims that its about the "technology" might actually be true. But it's not true and its not about the technology. Especially since its not about preserving anything. Its about destroying cool old machinery to get a few parts to make a stupid prop that either does nothing or just serves as a package for something completely modern or at best has some moving parts and flashing lights and indicates that somebody can at least do some basic wiring of batteries and bulbs and motors. Its not about the technology or the era at all. Its a parody of a stereotype and anyone who cites Wells and Verne as influences obviously hasn't read much Verne or Wells. At least none in NOVEL FORM. Read their actual books and you'll find the technology and machines are background only. There are no in-depth technical descriptions of how anything really works. Just vague thumbnail generalized filler material mentioning "electricity" or "gunpowder". Why? Because science fiction is FICTION. It's not written by MECHANICS or ENGINEERS. It's written by AUTHORS who have spent more time in a JOURNALISM or CREATIVE WRITING class than SHOP CLASS. And of course its the HUMAN ASPECTS that are important because HUMANS ARE THE AUDIENCE. And nobody REALLY cares how a FICTIONAL MACHINE WORKS. If 10% of steampunks have even read ONE of Verne's or Wells' books I'd be freaking amazed.

Yeah. Right. That's why you have an icebox and not a refrigerator. Right? And why you use a corded rotary phone if you have one at all. Right? And why you have no electricity in your house or apartment. Right? I guarantee if you're really THAT in to "steam", you can probably find something to do locally that will put you in direct contact with the technology. Steam isn't dead. Its still turning turbines and powering ships and powerplants. It's still heating buildings and distilling water. It's still being used for heavy-duty industrial cleaning of really nasty parts in really nasty environments and its still being used to scald the skin off of hogs in packing plants. You really want to live a "steam life"? Put away your costume and toys and go to work.

You're so "advanced" that you apparently don't know that "steam, gears and sprockets" are only considered "archaic" by people who are so out of touch with the MODERN MECHANICAL WORLD they don't have any idea that steam, gears and sprockets are still in widespread use today. And your "creativity" is figuring out how to do the same thing everyone else is doing but still be "unique" but not so DIFFERENT that nobody understands what you are. And the supposed foundations of steampunk in Jules Verne and H.G. Wells is kind of an interesting claim, since Verne and Wells both focus much more on the natural and human aspects of their novels rather than the mechanical and technological aspects. There literally are no in-depth, highly technical descriptions in either man's works. The machines and other technology are obviously mentioned and "explained" because its necessary for context and to establish the plot. In 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Verne's description of the technical aspects of the Nautilus is very brief and vague. Why? Because the ship is not the story. The people and their interactions and experiences are with the environment and each other are. And of course the purpose of science fiction is to stimulate imagination and encourage independent thought. If you're a born gearhead, you get Wells and Verne. If you've read Jules and Verne, at least in NOVEL FORM and not some "graphic novel" rehash condensed version that may be nothing but a very loose adaptation "in the style of" Jules and Wells, you know that they were both pretty ANTI-TECHNOLOGY. Captain Nemo didn't build the Nautilus to show the world his genius. He built it to HIDE from the world and explore what was left of it while something as still unexplored. He certainly wasn't an "environmentalist" in the modern sense, but he preferred NOT to socialize with other human beings. Kind of the opposite of your little conventions. And honestly, from what I see your conventions are just big theatrical productions where everybody can be or tries to be the "star". Honestly, that's not how real gearheads and mechanics roll. We (I'm a lifelong gearhead, fan of anything that turns money into noise and 25-year diesel mechanic with a "career" working on everything from nitro RC cars to 4500-hp diesel-electric freight locomotives) literally have NO "vanity" when it comes to our appearance in public. You can't in that line of work. At least not if you want to be successful. You're going to get dirty and sweaty and bloody and depending on the part of the industry you go into, maybe shitty and smelling like a garbage dump, too. Do we LIKE IT? Not really. But it's what we're born to do. Not what sounds fun and looks hip and makes us more socially acceptable. If you're interested in playing a part in a big play, you're probably NOT a gearhead by nature, regardless of how well you put a bunch of junk and expensive NEW hardware together to create a prop. If you're really into old machines and technology and see their value, you're into preserving it. Not creating "Victorian" takes on modern technology which primarily consist of creating a PARODY of a STEREOTYPE of "Victorian" living. Just like now, most people had jobs and spent their lives working to survive. There wasn't a genius inventor in every other little shop and people weren't doing a hell of a lot of playing period. At least not the ones that weren't born to rich families. You're not preserving anything. You're destroying it. You're tearing apart cool old machines to use a few parts for a costume. And in the process maybe destroying something pretty rare and valuable or at least USEFUL to someone else for something that will outlast a fad. And the whole DIY aspect steampunks claim is dubious at best. If everybody was really interested in creativity and doing their own thing there wouldn't be so much commonality. Would steampunk exist without an internet so everybody can go online to post their stuff and other things they see outside the "community" and share and steal ideas? Probably not. And it's not about the period or the machines or even the socialization and meeting other people like you. It's about YOU PERIOD and hanging out where you're very likely to be appreciated and validated and praised and where its really impossible to "fail". Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but its disingenuous to claim that a convention full of people who are doing the same thing in slightly different ways is about being an individual and being unique and being your real self. If you're REALLY into that lifestyle and time period and technology, there are ways to LIVE IT and make a living doing it. But you're probably not going to just put on a costume and make it. You'd have to learn period skills and a trade and put in a lot of hard work in a dirty blacksmith shop learning how to make things with fire and steel or a vintage vehicle restoration shop learning how to turn a pile of rusted junk back into what it was 75 or 100 or 125 years ago and with out destroying the parts that can't be replaced or not within the budget. And there won't be a crowd of people there to tell you how cool your costume is and how creative you are and how clever you are when it comes to making old junk look like it "works" just because the parts move. In the real world of old machinery and ALL machinery, you usually start with something that DOESN'T work and have to make it work again. And when you're done, you rarely get praised for being so clever and doing such a great job. After all, you're just doing your job. As a gearhead when I first saw the word "steampunk" online and Googled it I was kind of excited to see what it was about. Because whatever Wikipedia article or other description I read portrayed it as ACTUAL inventiveness and creativity and suggested people were making ACTUAL USEFUL MACHINES out of old parts. Because as a mechanic I can tell you that there have never been a LOT of people with the knack and ability and desire to work on the machines that keep everybody housed and fed and transported and such. And thanks to a lot of b.s. about "machines replacing humans" and "artificial intelligence" and "America doesn't build anything anymore" AND a lot of kids being raised without their fathers and significant contact with men doing "guy stuff" like working on cars and building stuff in home workshops and going to motorsports. And that lack of "guy stuff" is a big problem because with fewer and fewer shop programs, fewer and fewer kids get exposed to mechanical stuff and the technical trades and how COOL and SCIENTIFIC they are. So fewer kids go into them and we have fewer and fewer people to work on more and more machines and at some point, progress will grind to a halt. It would be awesome if steampunk was about promoting the technical trades and mechanic arts instead of just a social movement so white-collar city dwellers can play dress up and show off their toys and get their praise and adoration fix.

I think of steampunk of anything to do with the revealing, dramatization, and exaggeration of the usually-hidden inner workings of common things, except that it's more Victorian and unnecessary. It's the nitty-gritty of things that we don't see, but instead of wires, and circuits, and stuff, it's gears and pipes and light bulbs!

To me, long story short, steampunk means the future my great-great-grandmother dreamed for me. To be specific steampunk is a "guess what if" game. Guess what would have happened if electricity wasn't invented! In wich direction would our society would have evolved? What if we rely more on our creativity? What if we still have the optimistic world view people had before the world wars? To me steampunk is imagining a world where world wars hasn't happened, or at least they didn't insipred science into this confort-orientated world we live in, and they didn't deprive us from optimism in the future. It's not about clothing, neither time travel.

Joe Baumgart my steam-sona is that I'm an inventor that works on a lot of things used for science, I'm from Steam City, one of the capitals that are very high in the inventing, literature, and art category, I'm also an adventurer that time travels from other dimensions and time lines, and in my city I'm known as the "time lord" because I'm one of the few in the city that can time travel, there's many tales that have been told that I can reverse time and stop time as I wish or that I can turn people into objects and animals with one of my weapons that I created and that I live in the hills away from most of the city to work on my inventions. The city itself has a lot of gears and a few water mills that has one big gear as the mill, and they have markets and one big clock tower that's right in the middle of the city, and at night the city looks wonderful and with a lot of glowing lights and when your at one of the views of the city, it's a breath taking moment, and every night in the city is a full moon, but it is said that if your one one of the views at night and it's a half moon, you get good luck for two years, which is rare so that's why the legend in the city is still believed there.

You could do a Steampunk Assassin's Creed. Might have already been done. Would be cool, though.
