Great video.... I've shared it with everyone in my email list (Liberals and Conservatives).....however some who are still looking for the environmental utopia won't get it. I've lived in Oregon all my life and worked in the wood and paper industry for almost 40 years and I've seen first-hand the destructive effects of the government backed environmental movement. This government intrusion is totally on displayed in every segment of the video. Kevin and Georgie....Thank you and keep up the good work. Oregon...wake up!!!!!!

Absolutely wonderful! Thank you. It's so well done. This video highlights so many aspects of what's become the "Portland" and the Willamette Valley culture. It's anti-car, anti-energy, anti-growth. The traffic portion is so true. The intentional cessation of building roads and vehicle capacity is truly hurting business opportunities and jobs. The focus on light rail led to the demand that the CRC include TriMet's MAX into Clark County. That caused the bridge to be designed too low. Spending $3.5 Billion for a 1 minute improvement in commute times -- what a waste; all due to light rail. Gov. John Kitzhaber said: "no light rail, no bridge". He got his wish. Portland's traffic congestion is caused by the bottle neck at the Rose Quarter, and also by the requirement for all vehicles east and north of Portland to go thru the Vista Ridge tunnel. If they'd provide another way for vehicles in north & east Portland and coming from Washington to get to Beaverton, Hillsboro, and the Oregon coast, it would reduce traffic flows on I-5 and on I-84. (Yes, the old west side bypass!). Portland is in the middle of spending $1.5 Billion on a brand new bridge across the Willamette. But it won't carry any cars or trucks -- just light rail and bicycles and pedestrians. It's that mindset that caused so many people to leave. We can and must do better. THANK YOU for a great, informative, and entertaining video!

Good move but very flustering to see development and progress being fought at every turn, not by residents but by Salem and Portland groups. Answer for government seems to be throw more money at the problem even though we have "short falls" in the budget and people vote down tax increases.

I love how Portland believes they are on the path to creating a large city without large city problems, but they've ended up creating a city that suffers from issues only larger cities suffer from. It's like they can't even see the big picture with Portland. They look at Portland itself's traffic, without considering the origins of the traffic and what types. I mean, the newest expressway in the Portland METRO (So Clackamas), the Sunrise Expressway, was built almost entirely with semi trucks in mind since it leads directly to that massive multi-company distribution center. Clackamas isn't Portland, but it is part of the METRO. You have freight that originates from Portland and goes all over the state. You have all of the cities along SR-99E and SR-99W with agriculture. You have many out of city travelers, and thru-traffic. The truth is, that Portland is not an isolated city. It is one large metro with many nearby cities. Even Interstate 5 between Salem and Portland is three lanes all the way! And guess how many people live in the Salem Metropolitan Area! Over 400 thousand! But nope. Just tell all those pesky semi trucks to use the MAX! Just tell those pesky drivers to use Amtrak! Tell those Vancouverites to use... the bus? Even as people continue moving to the state and public transportation ridership is down. Oh, and let's toll 'em too. And not use the toll money to improve the roads but instead punish the commuter and hurt the economy. We have the funding for road improvement too, we absolutely do with all of our taxes and fees. You see many other states like Arizona for example with far less automobile related taxes and they have an unreal road system compared to ours.

Oregon looks like a beautiful place. Too bad people like this guy live there! Wind and solar power, lots of protected lands, public transportation... this place is great! How can you complain about these things that generate pollution free energy, preserve land for future generations, and encourage less cars on the road? It's really sad to see someone complaining about things that make the state a better place. Jobs, jobs, jobs... that's all I hear about. Why do we have to sacrifice our environment for the sake of jobs? The answer is that we don't. This guy is clearly VERY narrow minded and I suspect has been sipping the Kool-aid. Maybe what the state really needs is less people like him?

I've lived in many states and cities across the country and I have to AGREE with the points being made in this video. Hands down this is one of the most beautiful states in the USA but it is also one of the most pathetically managed economies where resources are so natively rich but so poorly squandered. I think the universal lesson to be grasped and acted upon is from the history of what happens to hoarders. Do they enrich themselves by greedily holding on to their possessions or do they eventually gorge themselves to death? It's sobering to consider and sensible NOT to repeat the blunder. Extremism is never a prudent path to anything.

Yes, Freeways are always the answer; just look how well they have worked everywhere else. Los Angeles is just so blessed with freeways making their commutes so nice and short. Oh and how lovely that drive from Portland to Coos Bay is but too bad all of those nasty trees block the view of the bare mountain sides. If only they would just clear cut them out of the way. Oregon is no longer the 3rd world country where big business can just extract all of the natural resources until there are no more. The timber industry wasn't killed by our local politicians either. I've lived other places where they treat their environment like this clown wants to and they are not nice places to live.

+Big Jared, Where you going to put them? The West Side Bypass (at least, the southern half) might fit and a new pair of lanes could probably be squeezed onto 217 and certainly I-205 between Tualatin and the Oregon City bridge could be widened, but anywhere that's built up already is NOT going to have new freeways built through it. It's a problem, no doubt.

The future is not in fossil fuel. Did you hear that 2,000 jobs for 4 years. what happens after that? Think it through short term thinking. Oregon only started managing the forestry industry in the 70's. Had they started in the 50's , they might not have had to stop the clear cutting in the 80's. Short term thinking got Coos Bay to where it's at.

Absolutely ironic touting the beauty of Oregon's forests and wild areas, and at the same time advocating for MORE logging! The timber industry already logged off most of the state's old growth; and now they're trying to take the last slice of the pie that we managed to save under the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP). As an avid hiker, I absolutely oppose this kind of pro-timber propaganda. Oregon's national forests and state forests were devastated up until the 1980s, and only now those ugly clearcut scars are beginning to heal over. Just check Google Maps' satellite view of Oregon. Oregon also only has 3-5% of its federal forest land permanently protected under wilderness; the rest is potentially open for grabs by the timber industry. Even roadless land temporarily protected under the NWFP can be overturned easily by heavy timber industry pressure. As for more freeways, I'm opposed to most. That old plan they had for Portland would have divided and segmented the city up into dozens of small cut off pieces of neighborhoods, which tends to lead to urban blight and decay. Now, a westside bypass and a few more Columbia River bridge crossings are a good idea, I think. The westside bypass would help divert I-5 thru-traffic away from downtown Portland, as well as diverting incoming traffic from Vancouver away from downtown Portland. Widening of freeways, however, is generally a bad idea in most cases, and all other alternative solutions should be considered first. But it should also be considered first before proposing new freeways. As for light rail and other multimodal forms of transport, I am in full support of. We need to modernize the PNW to catch up with the rest of the world. The MAX not only helps divert some traffic out of freeways, decreasing congestion and greenhouse emissions, but (perhaps more importantly) is incredibly popular among tourists (and is a investment into our massive tourism economy), spurs economic growth and brings additional customers to nearby communities and businesses, and makes it easy for non-driving students and elderly to travel around the city. We could also invest in a high speed rail line running the length of the PNW urban development corridor, starting at Vancouver, BC and ending at Eugene, Oregon. Along the way passing through major urban centers: Vancouver (BC), Bellingham, Everett, Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Kelso-Longview, Vancouver (WA), Portland, Salem, Albany, and Eugene. Travel times could be cut down to just two hours. Under progressive infrastructure leadership such as Bernie Sanders, we could easily fund massive economic infrastructure investment plans like this by closing loopholes and forcing millionaires, billionaires, and corporations to pay their fair share of taxes.

But, rather than address the errors/faults in the video, or to engage in anything resembling a conversation, you've just resorted to insults. Again. This is superb. Sadly, Portland now has the 10th WORST traffic congestion in the nation. It's because of the "war on cars", and elected leaders unwillingness to add vehicle capacity and build new transportation corridors. The last new transportation corridor built was I-205, which opened in Dec. 1982. Since then, regional population has DOUBLED. Of course traffic congestion has become a nightmare, when you double the number of people living in the region, but add almost no new vehicle capacity. But hey, they've spent roughly $5 billion on light rail, which carries about 1% of the regions "daily trips". The recent PEMCO survey indicates 94% of people prefer to use their privately owned vehicles. And 74% of the people say their POV is more "convenient". But Portland's "war on cars" continues. They will WASTE an estimated HALF of the $450 - $500 million being spent on the I-5 Rose Quarter modification, to create real estate. Oregon will build TWO concrete lids over the top of I-5 at the Rose Quarter, and spend an estimated $30-$50 million to build a bike/pedestrian only bridge over I-5 at the Moda Center. They will add ZERO new through lanes to I-5 at the Rose Quarter, which is what is truly needed to reduce traffic congestion. Thanks for the superb video. You should do an "update"!!!!

I won't name names here, but I think some of the people leaving negative comments on this video need to pay better attention. I have been a long time Northwest resident. Everything Kevin points out is true. Politicians ARE trying to shut down the road construction and the congestion is unbearable. These mass transit systems are inadequate, parking around them is almost non-existent. What the heck are we supposed to do, walk five miles to get to the transit station during the winter monsoons? Bikes, are you kidding? The trouble is, the crazy controlists are calling the shots in both Oregon and Washington. These are people who are both Republicans and Democrats. Not only have they ruined transit, the schools are in horrible condition, and yet they want to throw more money at a poorly working model where a large percentage of the kids don't bother to graduate. Common Core? Have you seen what they offer in the way of math? It is truly stupid to see windmills on the ridges surrounding the Columbia Gorge when the river is providing all the hydroelectric power needed. Tell me that it isn't sustainable, and I will tell you you're nuts. We live in the rainiest area of the U.S. and it fills the rivers, not to mention the snowmelt. Half the time I have driven through these wind farms a good percentage of them were not moving. One thing I do disagree with Kevin on is the idea that the farmers are suffering because of the food industry going gluten free. Gluten intolerance is not a myth. The grains have been genetically-engineered to the point that they are not safe anymore. One in four people cannot tolerate wheat. It's a fact. Europe won't buy our wheat crops. Farmers who try and grow non-GMO wheat are struggling with cross contamination in their fields. Getting off my soapbox. Let me end with this, please all you so-called lefties out there. Read both sides of the coin before flipping over for the owners of the kool-aide stand. Knowledge is power and most of you don't dig deep enough before forming your opinions.

+digidamsel, The reason that the windmills are often luffed is that there is insufficient distribution capacity for both the power from the dams during spring runoff and the wind farms. That will soon change when "The Beast" is opened from Camas to just north of Woodland (a 1 MV line connecting the Gorge production sites with Puget Sound). There will then be plenty of opportunity for the wind farms to generate whenever the wind blows.

He does not understand the dangers of climate change; he doesn't get globalization apparently, or the fact that the middle class is shrinking nationwide even though they don't have the same environmental restrictions; and in general he seems to only want to push the ignorant idea that environmentalism is stupid and destroys jobs.
