Even though he is now a treasured elder statesman, back in the 70's and 80's Michael Caine was willing to appear in ANYTHING if the money was right.

I would have to strongly disagree with Gene saying that the original Poseidon Adventure from 1972 wouldn't hold up after a second viewing, I would watch that film every Christmas or New Year whenever it's on TV, the sequel not so much.

"...and he's dead, and that's it--or do you want to make something more of it?" The quintessential disaster movie line!
@oldfashionedguy13684 жыл бұрын
@Konga 5000 No, it's not an insult, it's just that the original film is much, much better and the sequel isn't really worth my interest. (Gene would nominate the sequel as the Dog of 1979, btw).

I agree with you 100%. Part of the reason the movie was the biggest money-maker of 1973, was that so many people (myself included) saw it more than once.

Gene Siskel picked this as the worst film of 1979.
@gallery75964 жыл бұрын
I think Gene is correct calling out Roger for saying if you liked the original, you'll like the sequel. Ronald Neame's "The Poseidon Adventure" is far better made than the Irwin Allen directed sequel. Ebert also may have thought she was cute in her role, but Sally Field said this was the worst movie she ever made, and I agree. "The Poseidon Adventure" kicks the sequel's butt.
@michaelglenn3674 жыл бұрын
Sally Field was given the role. She made a lot of money. It was her job to give a good performace...no matter what she thought of the script. A great actor or actress can rise above the material. Other actors in this film rose above the material. Shirly Jones in my opinion was gave the most unconvincing performance. Its strange...she was actually a better actress in The Partridge Family.
@jmfitz6194 жыл бұрын
One simple reason this film was a bust compared to the original....the characters. In the original, the survivors were a group we got to know, to like, to care for, and to root for their survival. They worked together far better ( who didn't cheer on Belle Rosen when she dove in the water and saved the Reverend?). This one? Sorry, they were flat, uninteresting, just didn't do it....
@CaptainSpalding724 жыл бұрын
Field has said, "Smokey and the Bandit II," was the worst. I'm sure this is close, but not nearly as inept.
@CaptainSpalding724 жыл бұрын
@@michaelglenn367 the problem is she didnt. She was light weight and unconvincing. Michael Cain was even more ridiculous.
@gallery75964 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainSpalding72 Caine seemed to do so many movies back then just to pay for mansion renovations- including his other Allen directed bomb, "The Swarm." And re: *"Field has said, "Smokey and the Bandit II," was the worst,"* she told Andy Cohen "BTPA" was the bottom of the heap, but she may have re-considered.

@@connorbrennan4233 Hard to say. Even the original Poseidon Adventure was based on a dumb premise (tidal waves aren't water mountains) but nothing is as dumb as a shark w/ a family grudge who migrates 7 biomes south to attack a lady.

I had the misfortune to watch part of this movie on cable. The Only thing I remember about it is a scene where Slim Pickens, who plays a character who is a wine expert (!!), finds a rare bottle of wine among the death and destruction of the ship, and says "it's a beautiful bottle of wine! It's a BEAUTIFUL BOTTLE OF WINE!!" That's his most dramatic moment. Never has an actor strained so hard to make a stupid line mean something. You don't believe for an instant that this hayseed is a wine expert, and if he really thinks this is the only thing that is important in a sinking ship full of dead people where he himself and the few others who are still alive may be about to die, he's a completely demented nutcase, and deserves to drown. The fact that I can't remember anything else about this picture tells you how forgettable it is. The fact that it was produced by Irwin Allen, the laziest producer of schlock in the 60s and 70s, isn't surprising....

Well, the public had enough of disaster flicks by 1979. Both Airport '79 and Beyond the Poseidon Adventure were box office flops, along with 1980's When Time Ran Out. The special effects that dazzled moviegoers in Star Wars and Close Encounters also helped kill the disaster movie genre. And why does Michael Caine appear in these awful sequels (He was also in Jaws: The Revenge)? He's too good an actor for this junk!
@patrickshields52515 жыл бұрын
Because Caine needed to collect a paycheck, like any good actor in a bad film.

There's so much that's wrong about what these critics say... - They are not the same movie! - If you liked The Poseidon Adventure of course you're going to like Beyond... What? No! You might be interested, but you're gonna lose interest after two minutes. - Michael Cane and all the cast SUCK, as the direction does. Each one is acting in a different movie, with a different style. - The original movie DOES HOLD UP for a second and multiple viewings. It's 2021 and it's still great.
