Stam Fine Reviews looks at the 1980 TV follow-up to Michael Crichton’s Westworld. Beyond Westworld follows a team of Delos operatives hunting down robots stolen by their co-creator, Simon Quaid. An interesting idea that quickly ends up being a routine action adventure show doing the same settings as everyone else. Stars Jim McMullan, Connie Sellecca, William Jourdan, and James Wainwright. Beyond Westworld is a forgotten curiosity that lasted a grand total of five episodes.

Kudos to Stam Fine for devoting the sort of considered and high quality review synonymous with this channel to such a short-lived, and let's be honest, largely unremarkable TV series. I remember spending much of each episode just waiting for James Wainwright's character to come on screen. It was very much an opportunity missed probably not helped by having been made three or four years too late to capitalise on any momentum from the movie releases. The two leads never quite worked for me personally either. I never bought into them having been a couple in the past and John Moore didn't quite cut it for me as the lead, for whatever reason. That elusive "star power" thing. Although the writing probably didn't do either of them any favours either - robots looking for robots?

Considering West World the movie was (and is) one of my all time favorite movies (and premises) as a little kid and that I in the 70s kept hoping and waiting for a TV show (live or cartoon) based on it, It still amazes me that I have no memory of this show. Of course it not even lasting a full month helps, but still. Nada! And I'm someone who never forgot the Time Travelers TV movie or Doctor Shrinker. Ohhh, hey; any chance of Doctor Shrinker? Wonder Bug? How about Bigfoot and Wild Boy?

I remember seeing this rubbish when it first aired in the UK. The problem with almost all of these shows from that period is that there was very little imagination used to differentiate one show from another. It's like they had a box full of bland scripts and just mined movies for their premise then slotted the characters into the scripts. If it failed then mine another films premise and try the same thing again until something actually works. Then repeat! Like they do today with procedural dramas. Sausage factory television at its worst!

Strange that this was back when I watched as much tv as I could, especially sci-fi, and don't ever recall hearing about this show. Doesn't look like I missed out on much, except for one less opportunity to see the gorgeous Connie Selleca. ;-p It kind of reminds me of the Logan's Run tv series in the concept of trying to turn a movie into a tv series. I thought the series was pretty good as a separate entity from the movie...

9:14 Those glasses can be seen on Arnold in one of the terrible Terminator sequels, except they're Elton John colored (white, silver, platinum and diamonds). Westworld season 1 was fantastic. It all fell to pieces because the writers didn't have a plan for more seasons. And they also couldn't afford Hopkins full time (I suspect), and so the writing suffered, the rest of the cast forgot that Hopkins was even around so they defaulted back to their standard way of acting and it devolved into Netflix TV.

I would have NOT watched this show when it aired but I was too busy NOT watching "Galactica 1980." That year was rich with "Must-Avoid TV." My main issue with the original movie was this ridiculous plot contrivance: Delos could build robots with utterly convincing eyes, perfect facial expressions, and fully functional naughty bits, but realistic hands were just too far beyond their technology. What is it with successful movies then having awful tv shows? Logan's Run, Westworld, both were excellent films with sub-par tv shows. Why does this happen? I mean, blaming studio and network greed is the easy answer, but then look at Battlestar Galactica, which is a great (for its time) tv show.

I think it has to do with the era. Some of which can happen these days but there is less of an excuse. Essentially TV was considered a step down from movies therefore the standards were quite low. Science fiction never had the respect of “serious” among network gatekeepers it’s not surprising none of these adaptations made beyond a season. Given the premises of these shows financially they had to do better because they required special effects, uncommon set design and costuming. Any time you order off the menu it costs. Lastly I think that in general the more you nail down characters and plots the easier it was to get and keep an audience. Most shows don’t make it in general and a lot of times it takes a recalibration to get it right. Most shows were not given the chance to do so. Unfortunately that’s one of those easier said than done things especially for expensive commercial art like TV/Film which rely on a critical mass of audience size to sustain viability.
@MattMcIrvin
@MattMcIrvin 2 жыл бұрын
The same thing happened to Battlestar Galactica (the 70s original), in a sense--it ran for one season, then got cancelled and retooled on another network into the vastly inferior "Galactica 1980", which was this same level of shlock.
@MattMcIrvin
@MattMcIrvin 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlackDoveNYC Also, the few shows that were strong enough to make it past the first season were often as not ruined by that recalibration, since it was done by people with no imagination trying to chase what was popular or bring the budget down. Something like that happened to Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Battlestar Galactica, and Space: 1999--these shows may not have been masterpieces to begin with but you can see a step down in quality in their second seasons, often with a reshuffling of the basic premise. The third season of the original Star Trek after it barely survived cancellation is another example. Most later Star Trek series got better a couple of seasons in; the original series was the reverse.
@pegasusactua2985
@pegasusactua2985 2 жыл бұрын
@@MattMcIrvin Battlestar Galactica was an interesting case as its network (ABC) made the show without the intention of it making it past a single season. They only made it because of the new found hype around scifi due to the success of Star Wars, and figured it was going to flop (for perspective at that time no scifi show released after Star Trek survived past season 1). When it became a surprise hit ABC was in an awkward position of having a show that was too popular to cancel but too damn expensive to keep making so they purposefully sabotaged the shows quality so people would tune out and they would then have the excuse of cancelling it.

The idea of Westworld is a clever. Actually, it's an inspired idea. Humans and robots - interacting in surprising ways. That's why the original film works - even though it's pretty clunky. The problem is that TV producer-wannabees, who have virtually no talent, decided to take the idea of Westword and turn it into an unwatchable mess called Beyond Westworld. I will say, however, the new HBO series mostly worked - at least for the first season. But then, for reasons unclear to me, it became a slaughter of the week, with almost every character in the series, sooner or later, revealed to be a robot. What? This sort of lazy writing kind of negates the original idea of exploring human/robot interactions. I never made it through HBO Westworld season 2 before giving up. The HBO series certainly looks nice, and is very well-produced. No cheapness like Beyond Westworld. Too bad it also went off the rails, completely.
