@@debracox3020 that Era was filthy as well. Nothing is new, it simply gets presented in different forms. It's well known, that about all of the women in Hollywood in the 40s, 50s, 60s had to sleep with the directors for opportunities. I guess they slept with the directors with style and grace...

@@debracox3020 Phillis is a queen and should be treated as such. Marilyn Monroe probably would have only allowed you on her set as her cook or nanny and you couldn't eat in her restaurants, stay in her hotels, go to her schools, have accounts at her banks, live in her communities, etc. You probably would have had to enter the films studios from the back entrance. Is that era grace to you? To say that era was full of grace is basically like Trump says... Make America Great Again like it was in those days... America wasn't great for black people in the 50s... Are you also referring to the era where the much less talented Monroe, who stole the style of the much more talented Dorothy Dandridge... Could become a much bigger star? I was/am a huge Phyllis Hyman fan and I was so depressed when she passed away that I couldn’t play her records for a long time. I identified with her mental health struggles since I also have bipolar disorder and suffer from extreme mood swings. That last sentence “she had a lot of love from everyone else except the place it matters most, inside” really hit home. Life is difficult and I admit there have been many times I just wanted to leave this earth because of the deep internal pain I felt and still feel. Every day has become an effort to just go on. I’m trying to to win this battle, but it’s hard, very hard and lonely.

Man I love me some Phyllis! I cried like a baby when I heard she died. I'm a grown ass man crying right now as I type this comment. Thank you for this story sir. I knew bits and pieces about her life. But I didn't know as much about her life in depth. I knew about her troubles in her romantic life. I didn't know she had a husband for a number of years. I remember hearing that she was lonely which caused her to take her life. My first thought was, "Damn I would've married you in a heartbeat Phyllis Woman of my dreams Hyman!". I would've changed my last name to Hyman! She would've gotten tired of me. I would've been clinging on her leg so hard, she wouldn't have been able to walk!

Her note gave me chills because I understand. I once suffered from manic depression. Depression is one of those things that lingers around waiting to come back after you have overcame it. It’s a constant battle that requires prayer and faith to keep going each day. The spirit of heaviness (depression) and resignation of life go hand in hand. Sadly Hyman like many others lose the battle.

Not many people not even therapist can articulate what depression is. For about 20 years I was depressed until I read a deliverance manual that stated depression was a spirit. I started speaking to that spirit and using prayer & the word of God.The depression indeed went away, but as you have indicated it lingers around and if you do not constantly speak to it it will grab a hold to you again.

This is so scary! To look at a woman so beautiful, that she reminds you of you. To hear her story, to look in her eyes, to daily go through the same thing that you go through, is very scary! The only thing that's different from her actual story is that I don't do drugs! I cry so much for living in this world alone. Family friends can't fill this empty filling that you fill! Every time she cracked a smile, it was fake! She was literally all over the place trying to fill that void in her life! I'm 45 now, I cut myself off from the world. It's not out there, what I'm looking for, is not out there. And it wasn't out there for her! She's one of my favorite singers. Living all alone, is what brought me to this video. It's scary for me to see so much of me in her, in her eyes, in her smile. She did her best to hide what she was going through. It wasn't easy for her to do, being a Star. That's what saved her the first time. The second time, she pulled my move, locked herself in, came up with a story, then shut the world out. I literally can't stand this feeling living all alone. But, it's not out there.

As cliché as it may sound that is when you turn to God. I know that feeling of loneliness and depression. You have to find the little things. Nature calms me. Plus the belief of one day it will get better. Find things you love to do no matter how small or silly. Talk to the Lord and pray. I promise you, it will get better. Just gotta believe it will. Much love to you and all those that struggle with depression and loneliness.

Actually, the man she was dating, who threw her last birthday party in Fort Worth was going to propose the following week. She asked him to go back with her, but he was directing a play and couldn’t go! She had been particularly temperamental that weekend and very pouty and cranky! However she never indicated in anyway that she planned to do herself harm and check out. William Earl Ray, actor/director was devastated at her passing! The truth however is that he could not have saved her! She hated her illness and nobody was going to be able to stop her!

So tragic that she not only never got the recognition and success in her career she deserved, but also didn't have the lasting success in her personal life,or a sense of self worth and belief in herself. That was the most tragic thing of all. I hope she is finally at peace.

My Mom played her all the time. That song Living all Alone was one of the most beautiful and saddest songs I have heard in my life and it’s even sadder listening to it now because I think about the failed toxic relationships I was in that ended no matter how hard I tried to love these women and treat them good they just didn’t want what I had to offer. I remember a ex telling me one time I was too nice because I treated her good. Dumbest sh*t I’ve had heard in my lifetime here and the dating scene is even more of a cesspool nowadays until I have accepted that I will die alone and I’m cool with that.

Turned out? Leave Whitney out of it.. Phyllis allowed the industry to shelve her recording .. they had her in a 360 by the time Dionne and Aretha suggested Arista to Cissy .. Whitney was a minor .. Whitney was already signed for features outside of Clive Davis… leave Whitney.. The Voice out of it.. they sound nothing alike .. Phyllis had five years before Whitney made her decision to be famous. Maybe you’re turned out.

That's right. The label Natalie Cole was signed with, had tried that same treatment on her. All the label executives want is to squeeze as much money as possible, as often as possible out of the talent. That's when Natalie wanted to record an album paying tribute to her father, Nat King Cole. But the label didn't think that a tribute album would have a number one single along with the number one album. So the execs told Natalie to do one more popular hit (Pink Cadillac) like the Everlasting album that had a top ten single. Natalie talked with her manager about what kind of album she wanted to make. Her manager supported her and said, if the label didn't want to let Natalie make the album she wanted then maybe she could be let out of her contract with the label. The powers that be deemed that Natalie Cole wasn't a money cow. So they said, sure we'll let you out of your contract! And on June 11, 1991, Natalie Cole released Unforgettable... With Love! Who could have predicted that a jazz influenced Natalie Cole album to be a monumental smash hit. "Unforgettable" a virtual duet with her father; Nat King Cole, is just that - Unforgettable. EMI - Manhattan Records was the label that wanted to squeeze another "Pink Cadillac" kind of song out Natalie. And give the credit to Electra Records for seeing the possibilities for Natalie Cole's coming out from the shadow of her father. That's a really difficult task, because Nat King Cole cast a long shadow.

@@djk1mya, Clive Davis 'shelved' Patrice Rushen's album too. Until Patrice had a number one hit single that would help the sales for her album. In Patrice Rushen's episode of Unsung, she tells the story of Clive Davis putting her album on the selve for two, (three?) years. That type of treatment from her label didn't effect her music career. That's because Patrice Rushen's talent is multi-faceted. She has adapted her skills to be a music director for many event/award TV shows. That's how much Patrice loves to make music. And 'one' Clive Davis ain't gonna stop the show!

My Phyllis Hyman obsession is probably extreme. I'm 61 years of age and proud to say that I discovered my love of this gorgeous, most talented songstress in my early teens. When I lived up north, I would hop to see her wherever I heard she was performing. One of my fondest memories is catching her at a very small club in NYC, McHale's, (I believe). You couldn't tell me she wasn't singing just to me. Suffice it to say, that I love her music so much, that I include a few of her songs in my "Ballads by Lamont" shows - hard to believe that my tenor voice can cover "Somewhere in My Lifetime", "Old Friend" & "Here's that Rainy Day". My daughters ask if I'm depressed when I listen to her music. As I tell folks on my write-ups about Phyllis on my website, her artistry and sheer talent in how she delivered melodies, is what I'm listening to mostly. Yes...the lyrics tell a story. But there is no other voice, and will never be, like the one and only Ms. Phyllis Hyman!!!

Phyllis Hyman really had an amazing voice. This is what happens to people that don't compromise. Yes she could have been bigger, but that would have meant compromising not being true to herself. I'm of the belief that we do love ourselves. A person that doesn't love self would be a selfless person which means a person that lives for others. What I believe is that we don't truly think about what's best for us and make very bad choices. We get stuck in dreams and ideals that are actually self destructive. We believe that if that dream doesn't come true that we will be miserable so we don't give up on it in order to do right by ourselves and be truly happy or content. I think the music industry is a destroyer of people. It takes till there is no more then throws people out like trash. It really is no wonder that people become depressed and end up destroying themselves.

What a wonderful Beyond the Fame segment on the life of Ms. Hyman! I bless GOD that I am able to keep her memory alive with the PHYLLIS HYMAN Musical Tributes I perform! Ms. Hyman was MY 1st Shero! I grew up in an abusive foster home - a JET magazine cover was my first introduction to Ms. Hyman...then I heard her on the radio! I dreamed of wearing beautiful clothes, hair styles, and getting out of the horrible living situation...she gave me strength to endure and believe there was more to life... I never got to see her live nor meet her in person - but I feel part of her remains in each of us who love her. Phyllis proved you can be stylish, graceful, elegant and classy without revealing your body on stage. Her immediately identifiable contralto singing voice is haunting, rich, powerful and organic! Nancy Wilson often said Phyllis Hyman and Sarah Vaughn were 2 of the BEST vocalists she ever heard. That's love and respect from an amazing woman/artist who was also a friend. Phyllis traveled in the same circles with many other artists - and although in a room full of people she felt alone. It is so important that we really HEAR & SEE people & do the work to try to CONNECT. Her memory, music, legacy, loveliness shall LIVE on...as it has for all these years. I am humbled to have the opportunity to travel back down memory lane with fellow Phyllis Hyman music lovers... while introducing to others the music of the LEGENDARY Songstress, Entrepreneur, Model, Lyricist and sooo much more - Ms. Phyllis Linda Hyman. I pray I honor her music and memory for all my days. Truly a humbling honor to be blessed with vocal tonalities some believe are reminiscent of Ms. Hyman. It is NOT about fame for me but honoring the space I occupy - doing what i was created to do...make the spaces better off...simply because I passed through. My performances are a CELEBRATION of the Life and Music of Ms. Hyman... Mental illness is real so the greatest lesson is to take seriously how much we need to make efforts to help one another for you cannot 'see' this illness. I would be humbled to gain additional support - to see Ms. Hyman's music revived and a tour to the nations who still know and love her...and may enjoy a live performance of Ms. Hyman's music. www.marycrossmusic.com I perform to sold out shows in tri state region of NJ DE PA and will be in the DMV in early Oct 2022. To hear my voice please visit my youtube channel Mary Cross music. Here is a live rendition of Be One at the Hilton on City Line Avenue Phila PA kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adCifaiZy72tqJc.html THANK YOU FOR READING! XO

Now she is my favorite artist. So sad she didn’t know her worth. I wish she didn’t take the easy way out.
