I have a Fern, it's a great chair. No headrest, digital knit, with lumbar.

Took your advice & got my fern with digital knit no lumbar or headrest 3-days ago. This chair is amazing! Ive had 8 back surgery’s since 2007 & for the first time ever I’ve been able to sit in a chair for hours on end without any back neck or shoulder pain. The comfort & style is unbelievable!! By far the best investment I’ve made in a very long time! Thank you BTOD, thank you Haworth/Fern.

I have a Fern and it is very good, but not a perfect chair. The seat cushion is way better and deeper than my Amia's (even with extra foam added), but it is quite firm until it breaks in. I'm 5'11" 200 pounds, and the seat pan could also be longer to fit me better. I agree the back rest is not the best, I got mine without optional lumbar support and I had to roll up some foam and shove it into the lower back to feel enough support. Mine also does not have the digital knit and I can feel the plastic with my spine some, so getting that is a good idea. There are no perfect chairs, but this is one of the best available. Thumbs up!

I got a Fern last summer on offer for 20% off. What I don't like: the back of the seat. I'm 6'4" and therefor have the seat at the front-most position and sit at the very back of the seat. But because of the straight edge on the back of the seat, it feels bad after some time because the 4-5 inches in front of the edge have softened up much more than the edge itself. If the back edge was at least a little bit waterfall-y I assume it would be much more comfortable for tall people like me.

The problem I have with Haworth Fern Executive is that there is no support behind the neck. There needs to be an air bladder or additional foam in that area. I had to purchase an aftermarket product that just makes the chair look cheap and doesn't work as good as if it had been properly designed in the chair.

I bought a Fern 14 months ago, and still absolutely love it. It's the most comfortable I've ever owned, by far, and I've owned MANY (63 years old). So much, in fact, that I just dumped a penny on one of the new Atlas Headrests for it.

Just wondering if the you have a seat cushion with fabric (not leather). As BTOD video stated , the cushion can be firm in the early time period of ownership, and then soften up over time. Has that happened to you 14 month old chair? I using a a previously used Fern and the seat so far, appears to be comfortable.

@@thewhitewolffl I have the fabric version, all black and normal mesh back (kept costs down). My seat is still VERY comfortable, and I work from home, so it's gotten HEAVY use since it arrived. I recently bought a Steelcase Leap V2 refurb (from BTOD) for a 2nd office in my house. I like it a lot, but the Fern is still the better/more comfortable one (for me). I ALMOST got a 2nd Fern but just couldn't bring myself to justify the price since I'm only in the 2nd office for maybe an hour or two per day. But yes, 14 months later, I've still THRILLED with it.

I just recently bought a Leap v2 and find that my rear starts going numb after about an hour or so. I am quite heavy, pushing around 300 pounds, and have a taller torso with shorter legs. Would any of these chairs properly support my rear? It isn't the front of my rear/thighs either, as I have had people say that my seating angle would cause that (I don't like my feet flat on the ground, but instead on a pad that makes for a more 110 degree angle and a foot under me). It is a bit ironic, I could care less about the tilt, recline, or even the crazy armrest adjustability (just height). I just need an office chair that I can sit in for at least a few hours at a time where my rear doesn't lose feeling and preferably has a headrest that isn't terrible. Does anyone with my sort of frame have any recommendations that have worked for them?

I worked at a company where we had the first generation of Zody chair. At least for that generation I have seen the lumbar support part break several times. I think that is disappointing for a chair in this price range and I hope it was fixed on more recent versions. Also, for me personally, the lumbar support on the gen 1 Zody was just a bit weak.

Not a proper test but during my thesis all us students remarked how great the Interstuhl Everys they had in the offices felt lol. Interstuhl probably doesn't have much presence in the US, hence limited interest to test them. Would love to see them review more european brands though, like Vitra, Actiu, Forma5, etc.

We do not have a good way to access the chairs here in the US, so it would cost us a fortune to bring them over from EU. To be honest though, I am not impressed with the chairs. We have seen the line and have 2 versions of the Pure chair. I would rank it around a C tier for comfort. -Ryan

Just to offer an alternative view to all the fanboyism... I started with the Fern, digital knit, no lumbar support and like others, found my body needed the lumbar support add-on. However, and I say this as someone who happily spends money on things I like and think are worth it, I didn't think upgrading to add lumbar for even more money made sense. The slippery armrests, the expensive but scratchy wool fabric for the seat (though that depends on which fabric selection you pick, I did explore all the options thoroughly with the custom order guy and frankly realized I just don't like the Haworth upholstery), and other aspects in the build were not equal to the price, nor up to the standard of, for example, Herman Miller. I actually don't like HM chairs, but the build quality at least is is keeping with their high prices. The Fern is good... but I think overpriced. I returned mine just as the Zody 2 and Zody LX/Luxe/Upholstered were coming out. I went for the LX and over time realized several small, unrelated things were faulty. Maybe it was a bad unit or maybe it was shipping, so Haworth sent another unit. This one had a seat mech that was flat out broken and unusable. I was thinking of asking them to replace that with a third chair, but in the meantime, the first one (which Haworth let me hold onto and continue to use) actually developed more problems in the like 2 or 3 months I continued to use it. All things unrelated to each other - seat mech, arm assemblies, armpads, and the upholstery all had problems. Oh, and like the BTOD guys say, there is something about it that is actually UNcomfortable, I think they are on to something when they point to the backrest but the seat somehow also seemed wrong to me. MUCH TO THE CREDIT OF HAWORTH, they let me return everything and walk away without keeping a single penny from me. They were very nice and responsive and had good customer service every step of the way. Maybe I should have tried the regular Zody 2 but I just can't see myself liking the back, and I didn't like what is supposed to be an identical seat and mech on the LX. I think I have a more positive opinion of the Very than the BTOD guys... but it is so boxy-looking and kind of boxy-feeling as well, and I just wanted more out of a chair. Anyways, as I mentioned, I don't like HM chairs either, so I eventually settled on the Knoll Life chair, but some might know the Life has had production/quality issues on and off, seemingly for as long as they've marketed the chair, and I never got mine delivered... I also considered Humanscale as I think their chairs are very comfortable, but just a little on the relaxed, work/lounge side rather than the intense style of sitting-at-a-desk working my fingers off all day kind of use I need. Finally, I realized that I kept coming back to the Steelcases and though I kept finding them uninspired-looking, I finally admitted that they are the most comfortable, truly made for intense work, also have top build quality like HM, and seem to have no problems with production or supply. My butt is finally at rest in a Leap!

Had a Fern, hated it. Have an Embody as my primary chair, love it some days, it's okay others. I also have a Leap V1 which I think it overall a more comfortable chair. My next chair will either be an Ekornes Stressless office chair or a Eames soft pad executive or a Gunlocke Washington like my father used to have.

I assume their argument would be "You can save up for a $600 GPU. Maybe at times an almost $1k GPU. Why not save up the money for comfort?" Or something like that. But also, you don't have to aim for these. They have a video for best chairs per budget, if I am not incorrect. 🤔 Imo, if saving up about $1k is inconceivable, then definitely give that video a watch.

I bought a Fern based on gushing reviews like this and it was awful. The seat would make my butt fall asleep in 15 minutes, the backrest mesh felt like every other crappy mesh chair and the arm rests were really hard. I really don't understand how people can claim it's a great char. It really boggles my mind how people could have such different opinions about this chair. Maybe it's because I like to slouch? Maybe it's good for a different physiology? I don't have any back issues so I don't know... The only good thing I can say about it that it felt durable and was decently adjustable. I think that's probably one of the reasons it was so uncomfortable -- the materials were chosen to last a decade rather than be comfortable. Also, if you find the video where random BTODtv staff do quick reviews of the Fern, you can see in that video that none of them are particularly excited by it. Any $1000+ chair should feel amazing IMO. I guess my take away is to never buy an expensive chair based on online reviews.

Hilarious, but the chair was uncomfortable any way I sat in it -- even without slouching. My mistake was thinking "very expensive = very comfortable". I found the Fern to be on par with random $150 chairs from staples/office depot but with better build quality and adjustments. I will not buy another high-end chair without sitting in it first regardless of what online reviews say.
