In this video, I talk about how I made the motor mounts for my CNC conversion. The path I took was by no means straight forward though, I had to learn a lot about machining, machine tools, and where I should not cheap out. I share with you all that I have learned so that you can hopefully get started a bit easier if you're doing something similar.
Part 0 where I give an overview of the project: • BF30 CNC #0 - Overview

What I have done with my BF20 is I 3d printed the parts in cf nylon then used the temporary printed parts to cnc the aluminium ones. The 3d printed parts held up extremely well!

Dude I have the exact same dial indicator and bought the same face mill then switched to the same fly cutter when I couldn't get a good surface finish... also to make my motor mounts. Crazy haha

Great job on machining those motor plates. It's fun to watch you figure out how to do this. I have a round column mill and have used it for about 10 years, and I still have those "eureka" moments quite often. 14:10 I'm curious if you had any issues due to using dowels on what your referred to as the "Y aziz (I believe to be the X) I will watch on with the series to find out, but it seems as though the torque from the motor could be an issue with that little support. Or maybe I'm totally wrong.

Don't use a drill chuck with an endmill for milling. The chuck or endmill can come loose and Murphy takes over from there. Use ER collet holders. Other than that I like you're enthusiasm and its informative for all. Keep it up.

Hi, I like your videos and enjoy your commentary. I have a different Chinese variant of your BF30 mill and am thinking of doing the same CNC conversion. Can you tell me the spec you chose for your steppers and ballscrews? Sorry if I missed that detail in your videos.

You can achieve the same finishes with a face mill by removing all but one insert, which has the added bonus of not turning into a projectile if the insert came loose

Love your content. I have a BF20L CNC converted. Really fun machine. Only thing for your end mill you better by ER collets because the drilling chuck is not made to take side load. Your machine is as rigid as the the weakest part and using a drill chick will exponentially increase it.

I know, the only reason I'm using it over the ER collets is that the ER collet has an ugly amount of run out and I can't really afford a nice one at the moment.

@@DarkArtGuitars Ah ok, I have a stardard one you can get on Ali and I am within 0.01mm runout. For sure good collets is a must for precision machining, but your drill chuck will probably have even more runout. At least mine has it :-). Waiting your next video!

Very interesting. I have the same machine and i plain to convert it. What are the diameters of your ball screws for each axes ? Is there space enough for the X ballnut and ballscrew ? Can you detail the mount of ballscrew (publish of the plan will be very apreciate). Sory for my bad english.
@DarkArtGuitars

I'm using 2005 ball screws on all the axis. The fit with the increased size of a ball nut means some grinding, but it's not that bad (I'll show more in the further parts). Once I'm done with the project, I'll also release the 3d model, but I want to know that it works this way first before I publish it.

Nothing is wrong with your facemill, just try uncoated sharp inserts with the largest radius you can find, like 0.4mm

High speed steel works well for turning or machining aluminum but if you got some Aptk1604pdfr-MA3 inserts for your face mill and crank up the rpms it will machine well. Mineral oil or vegetable oil on your carbide saw blade will keep the aluminum from sticking to the teeth and chalk rubbed on your file will keep the aluminum from plugging the teeth.

Doing everything manually is probably the best thing you could have done, anyone can buy a kit and fit it, but by doing it yourself manually you actually learn how to use a mill. By choosing the big ballscrews you made life dificult, 1605 would have been perfectly sufficient, yours look like 2005. and you would not have had to modify the actual table(i watched another video first) I cannot understand why you put the BK bearing on the X axis inside the plate so you had to modify the table.
